Alyssa Satin Capucilli was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1957. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College, and pursued her interest in dance, becoming a professional dancer and dance instructor. Though Capucilli had written stories, poems, and even puppet shows as a child, she didn't consider a career as a writer until after her own two children were born. To this day she sees herself as both a dancer and a writer, and the two professions complement each other nicely: dancing is, in her words, “telling stories in another way,” and readers of her children's books can attest to the rhythm of her language. Since 1994, she has written more than 15 books for children, and her work has been translated into French, Hebrew, Afrikaans, Greek, and Bulgarian.
Capucilli lives in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, with her husband and children. They have a chocolate Labrador retriever named Huckleberry, who likes to watch the author at work.
The girl that owns Biscuit is going to celebrate Earth Day, and so Biscuit comes along too. This book handles the idea of Earth Day quite nicely, the plot moves along and isn’t overly didactic. Well illustrated too.
Biscuit and the little girl do their part to be good helpers on Earth Day. This book provides many examples of things that can be done to help celebrate Earth Day, and save the environment that young readers can participate in.
Biscuit's Earth Day Celebration is a cute - and inexpensive - little book with a really good message about caring for the Earth (it's all about caring for animals, planting seeds, picking up litter, etc. - things that even very young children can do themselves). As an adult, I'm happy to say that the Earth Day message also comes free of any political overtones, so parents need not be concerned about any hidden agenda finding its way into this book aimed at the youngest of children (the target audience is ages 2-6). With all of its wonderful color illustrations (Biscuit the Little Yellow Puppy is such an expressive little cutie), I would expect this to be a popular bedtime story for kids. Many a child may first learn the joy that comes from reading by following Biscuit's adventures through this and the numerous other titles in the Biscuit series.
I haven't read from the "Biscuits" series in over 10 yrs. This book was a reminder as to why this series is so special. Biscuits adventures are always fun filled & packed with real lessons.
As always Biscuit the puppy books are never upsetting. Nice pictures so young listeners can follow along with Biscuit and his owner the little girl on whatever adventure they are doing. This book follows them on a day to celebrate "Earth Day".... they plant trees, they clean up trash and other things.
