Always Blue for Chicu is a fantastic picture book that will hopefully get the recognition it deserves.

Chicu is a wild parrot, captured in his native land, and shuttled from home to home until he finally finds happiness with those who respect him for who he is. While the theme could have possibly been downbeat and depressing in another's hands, Dugan skillfully blends humor and wildly colorful characters throughout the story, and the appealing illustrations just add to the merriment. This might be my new favorite book.

This heartwarming story about Chicu the parrot also skillfully blends in factual information about where the parrots who become our pets come from, and how they should be treated. A bonus section at the back details how to care for parrots.

Younger children who know their colors, are encouraged to participate in the text each time the word "blue" appears it is as a dot of color rather than a word.
