The Way I Feel
When I Feel Scared
Children often feel afraid. This book, with its comforting words and illustrations, will help children address those fears and learn some new ways to cope with being afraid. First, a little bear describes some of the things that frighten him, like bad dreams or big, tall slides, or when his mother goes away. Sometimes, he just feels scared and doesn't know why! But he learns there are things he can do to make himself feel better. A "Note to Parents and Teachers" reinforces the positive messages in the book.

October 14, 2021This book is about a kid bear that talks about all the things he’s scared of but finds a way to deal with it when he is scared. The structure of the book helps a reader connect with it when it mentions things he’s scared of. As for the illustration they seem to be water-based with a lot of fun colors. I like how the book gives kids explains of things they can be scared of. This book can be used on the first day of school when some students can be feeling scared of starting the new school year.

“I liked it a lot.”- Wolfie, 6yo
This is a simple and effective book in terms of suggesting different ways that children can take charge of their fears. It also identifies which fears are helpful (growling dog, playing near street) vs. unfounded fears (monster under bed, etc).
Definitely recommend.

This an excellent comfort book for many reasons. However the main reason this book stuck out to me was the overall theme/lesson which was showing/teaching students how be comfortbale when they are scared. This book gives great tips on how to help children control their fears and how to deal with them.

I thought this was a cute little book. The illustrations are really cute and go with the story. It talks about what you can do if you are feeling scared. I like how it not only talks about what you can do, but it also talks about things you can do to prevent yourself from getting scared.

"Scared is a cold, right feeling."
A little bear is scared of loud noises, bad dreams and when his mom goes away. But he knows what he needs to do. He can tell someone and talk about his fear, he can cuddle with someone or read his favorite book.

What a wonderful book to describe what being scared means, how it feels, and what it might look like. Plus it gives some tools to learn how to deal with being scared.

A good enough series. It held my 4 year olds interest and he identified well with it, nodding his head as we read along. We also read When I Care about Others, which is probably even better, as it explains empathy, a very timely concept to understand for 3-4 year olds ...

November 21, 2015Author: Cornelia Maude Spelman. Tags: feelings, scared. Perfect book for the beginning of kindergarten when students are feeling scared or anxious about being away from their parents. I would want my students to know that it is alright to feel those things and to talk about those feelings. That way the class can work together to fix the problem.

This book is nice but all the books of the series I have read so far, are very similar: " when you feel angry/sad/scared/worried tell someone. It is o.k. to feel angry/sad/scared/worried, even grown up people feel like this, and that feeling is not going to last forever, you will feel better".

First time I've read a book in this series and I really liked it. The pictures are cute and it teaches good concepts to children. As a social worker/therapist, it was fun to see that this was written by a social worker. I look forward to reading other books in this series.

I've been collecting all these Cornelia Spelman books about feelings for the library. They are good for guidance class or other classroom discussions with younger students about dealing with feelings appropriately (or even identifying feelings).
