Following a trail of secrets back to his family ranch, Jack Winchester needed a cover to solve a decades-old mystery. And Josey Smith offered him the perfect one—if she would agree to pose as his wife for a week. The gorgeous redhead was up to her neck in trouble, and Jack protected what was his, pretend marriage or not.
On the run from a killer, Josey had no choice but to accept Jack's proposal. She no longer trusted herself to tell the good guys from the bad, but the handsome, blue-eyed cowboy made her feel safe. Yet it soon became apparent that the sparks that flew between them were anything but fake, and the danger they faced was all too real….
B.J. Daniels started her life in Houston, Texas, before her family moved to Montana at age five. She grew up in a cabin in the Gallatin Canyon near Big Sky and later on Hebgen Lake near West Yellowstone. Because of her love for Montana, most of her books are set there. Born into a storytelling family, all she'd ever wanted to do was write stories. After a career as an award-winning newspaper journalist, she wrote and sold 37 short stories before she finally wrote her first book, ODD MAN OUT. Since then she has won numerous awards including a career achievement award for romantic suspense. She lives in Montana with her husband, Parker, two Springer Spaniels. When she isn't writing, she quilts, boats and. makes rope/fabric baskets. She always reads, loving to lose herself in a good book.
I really enjoyed this book. It had two stories going on simultaneously, but was easy to follow both of them. Josey knew her prints was on the murder weapon that killed her step dad. She was running for her life, but knew she couldn't go to the police. Her step brother had tried to kill her once, and she knew he would try again. When Jack pulled up next to her on a deserted road, and asked if she wanted a ride, she climbed into his sports car. All Josey wanted to do was put as much distance between her, and her step brother as she could. When Jake asked her to pretend to be his wife, she said yes. Jack was going to see his grandmother that lived on a remote ranch. Josey jumped at the chance to go to a ranch in the middle of nowhere. Pepper's husband had gone missing many years ago. His body was never found. She didn't know if he just left her to start a new life, or if he died. After he left, she hid away on her remote ranch. She only had Enid ,and Alfred that lived on the ranch. The married couple was a little odd to say the least. Enid was Pepper's housekeeper. Pepper knew that Enid had been drugging her for some time. When Pepper attempted to fire the couple, Enid said she would black mail Pepper, in the end the strange couple remained at ranch. Both stories came together nicely in the end. The ending was intense, with bullets flying. The best decision Jake ever made, was stopping to give Josey a ride. The two fell in love while pretending to be married. Great book!
Jack Winchester is going back to Winchester Ranch at the invitation of his Grandmother, Pepper Winchester. He, along with the rest of the family, were kicked off the ranch 27 years ago by Pepper in her grief for her beloved son, Trace. It appeared that he ran away when he didn't appear for his lavish birthday party that Pepper was throwing for him. Along the way, Jack picks up a lovely hitchhiker by the name of Josey "Smith". Jack knows she is in trouble but what kind. Despite of his doubts, he invites Josey to go with him to Winchester Ranch in the disguise of his wife.
Josey is running all right but from what and why does she cover up from head to toe and not wear any of the sundresses that Jack purchased for her? She also constantly is wearing scarves. What secrets is Josey hiding? This story is weaving several mysteries together. Jack is trying to figure out what his grandmother is up to while keeping a promise to his Mother.
It was recently discovered that Trace didn't runaway but was murdered. Is Pepper trying to make up to her family after 27 years or does she have an agenda of her own? What is Jack searching for when he sneaks out in the middle of the night? Will Josey's past catch up to her while she on at the ranch?
Also making an appearance is McCall from Gun Shy Bride. She is busy investigating a murder of an abused woman found near the river along with a submerged car.
Yes, with all of this going on, I was GLUED to my e-reader. What else could Ms. Daniels put in this intriguing mystery romance?! I was enchanted right from the beginning. There was no way I was putting this down until I finished this.
I loved both Josie and Jack. What a perfect couple. The chemistry between them was electric right from the start.
I highly recommend this story (well really the entire Whitehorse series!!)
Despite the invitation, Jack Winchester’s aware his grandmother, Pepper, has no desire to know him. One glance at the redhead tells Jack Winchester picking up Josey Smith is going to be trouble but he can’t help himself. Fear and her bedraggled appearance make Josey wary of the handsome stranger offering her the ride she desperately needs.
Josey and Jack each have reasons for pretending to be a honeymooning couple. It doesn’t take long for Jack to discover Josey’s problem and his is evident as soon as they arrive. But the desire to protect each other is strong as the attraction between them catches fire while some myster’s are resolved
Shrewd grandmother Penny has spaced out the arrival of her other grandchildren looking for more answers around beloved son, Trace’s murder, much to daughter, Virginia’s chagrin. The opening scenes bring back characters McCall and Luke (Gun-Shy Bride) looking for answers as another murder leads to the ranch. Rating: 4.25stars
HITCHED is a bonus story found in B.J. Daniels’s Harlequin Intrigue: DOUBLE ACTION DEPUTY, and it starts off with Jack Winchester picking up a lovely hitchhiker, Josey Smith. Following a trail of secret to his family ranch, Jack needs a cover to solve a decades-old mystery, and Josey Smith, needing a place to hide, agrees to pose as his wife. Sparks flying between them are anything but fake, and the danger they face is all too real. B.J. Daniels is a talented storyteller to draw her readers into an intense story full of suspects, lies, and murder. HITCHED is a suspenseful thriller that leaves you not knowing what will happen next.
This is a Cowboy Romantic Suspense, and this is the second book in the Whitehorse, MT: Winchester Ranch series. I have not read the first book in this series, but I do think you can read this book as a standalone. I enjoyed getting to know the characters in this book, and I loved that their backstory was slowly revealed throughout this book, and I think that kept up the suspense and made you want to keep reading. I really loved the ending when everything unfolded, and I think it was done so well.
okay starts as a fake marriage but the falling in love is worth it!
He spots her on the side of the rode and gives her a ride. Asks her to come with him to his Grandmothers house because she invited him. The family reunion is strange and so many secrets keep coming out on both sides of this relationship. But the end is so worth it! I love me a happy ending!
I've loved everything about this one. And I am thrilled that the mysteries just keep unravelling. The family ties in this episode also bring so much promise for Victoria in the future.
I have been reading and enjoying books by B.J. Daniels for years. I, however, didn't find this book as interesting as most of her other books. The plot and the characters didn't seem to be as well developed as I'm used to. The action didn't move very quickly, and the basic story plot didn't seem very involved. Hopefully, the next book in the series will be more suspenseful.
Many secrets come out. Josey is running for her life. Jack is looking for some truth. Josey's evil finds them. Thankfully, McCall comes in like a white knight.
Picked this up and finished it in one sitting! It grips you right out with the beginning of 2 women being hanged by RJ whose a nasty man, he kills Celeste and Josey gets away. Josey gets a ride from Jack whose going to visit family on a remote ranch in the middle of nowhere. And they find out they like each other actually have fallen in love with each other. RJ catches up to them and tries to shoot Josey and in the mean time hits Jack in the head and knocks him out. Then the Sheriff arrives and saves the day!
Never disappointed when I pick up a book by B.J Daniels. The suspense plot line was very well developed. The secrets woven in Jack and Josie's past were well done. The characters well developed and the sexual tension steamy. I love a good cowboy story, and one laced with intrigue is a plus. Quick read but well worth it.
Too "cloudy" for my taste. The hero had an ulterior motive and kept secrets, the heroine had an ulterior motive and kept secrets, the hero’s grandma had an ulterior motive and kept secrets…All these ulterior motives and secrets succeeded only in giving me a slight headache.
The usual good Harlequin Intrigue selection. This is a continuation of the "Winchester Ranch, Whitehorse, Montana" series. Good characters in a very improbable situation. One complaint, no condoms. I find that unacceptable in this modern age.
