Carol Kimball's comprehensive survey of art song literature has been the principal one-volume American source on the topic. Now back in print after an absence of several years, this newly revised edition includes biographies and discussions of the work of 150 composers of various nationalities, as well as articles on styles of various schools of composition.
I liked the book in General a lot. The Scandinavian section was a bit small, I learned a lot, making connections between names. Read it through now, but will revisit the individual parts when needed.
A wonderful guide to the vocal art song repertoire! If you need an concise outline in the vast range of the vocal literature, this is the must source on your first place. Very informative. I met this book as a reference in preparation of my qualifying exam. But I think it is definitely worth reading for pleasure than only for your papers or exams. Of couse if you have interest in this area.
I used this book in Vocal Repertoire at the university, and then continued to use it throughout college. It is a valuable resource for song recommendations, and historical/interpretive information for music chosen for study. For anyone learning art song, this is a great book to have handy.
