Eleanor Farjeon was an English author of children's stories and plays, poetry, biography, history and satire. Many of her works had charming illustrations by Edward Ardizzone. Some of her correspondence has also been published. She won many literary awards and the prestigious Eleanor Farjeon Award for children's literature is presented annually in her memory by the Children's Book Circle, a society of publishers.
Awards: Hans Christian Andersen Award for Writing (1956)
I love so many of Farjeon's stories. And I love how the singer Cat Stevens created "Morning has Broken" from her Morning Song. And the title poem here is moving and lovely. But.
This collection is full of Saints, and Heroes (mostly warriors, and including Columbus), and poems that are either twee or full of references no child could be expected to know. Very disappointing.
Skimmed every page, but going to mark it dnf because it would break my heart to smear her legacy with a low star rating. April 2021.
