Surreal Friends brings together for the first time the work of three women Surrealist artists, friends in exile in Mexico in the 1940s: British painter Leonora Carrington, Spanish painter Remedios Varo and Hungarian photographer Kati Horna.

Filled with incredible art (more Carrington and Varo prints than Whitney Chadwick has in Women Artists and the Surrealist Movement - a treasured book I've had more than half my life now). And the story is so interesting, and needed to be told (for people into surrealism). I also, of course, loved the part before they fled to Mexico (WWII, you know), when they were working with the Surrealist artists in Paris.

As a work of art-historical scholarship, the book is a bit lightweight, but as a beautifully produced, engaging introduction to three fascinating female artists, and one that includes quite a bit of information not available
