Author Wall provides an extensive review of published theory on the 1 g4! Opening, and concludes the survey with fifty complete illustrative games. Players often find they can have good results with this weapon, perhaps in part because some opponents believe the move has to be so bad that white's game will automatically fall apart regardless of what is played -- A dangerous assumption. Swiss Master Grob played hundreds of correspondence games in which he opened with "The Spike". This experience led to substantial refinement of the theory.
