This was a pretty good romance-thriller about a girl finding her man & dealing with her abusive father. The situation was fairly horrifying & logically structured. The hero & heroine were both tough, but very believable. While there is some sex, it wasn't over done nor too explicit. I should probably give the book an extra 1/2 star for that since too many authors succumb to filler sex lately.

If I have any criticism, it's that the fight scenes just didn't work all that well for me.

This is probably one of the most depressing books I've ever read. To call this romantic suspense is doing RS a disservice. An entire book detailing the dysfunctional family drama of a narcissistic/abusive father, his wife who puts up with it, their son who kills himself and their daughter (the 'romantic suspense' part) who is too spineless to leave home and take her mother with her. Thoroughly disappointed, and definitely would not recommend this unless you just want to be dragged down.

Very well written! Interesting, entertaining and overall a great read. I was at first worried about the name and the picture on the cover, but after reading two other books by the author firstNo Justice [image error] and Hit List [image error] I realized that the author simply writes well all the time.
Something else I noticed about this author: she manages to add unpredictable and thrilling turns in all her novels when you at least expect it.
And yes, you kind of know that the two main

Honestly, I have no idea how this book ended up on my kindle. Because of the cover I thought it was something inappropriate for a while. I ended up reading this book because I finished a previous one while on a trip. The book definitely sucked me in and I wanted to finish it just to see how it ended, but it's not the most imaginative book. The writing in the book is fairly simply which makes it a quick read but a little dull on the character development side. I think the relationship between ...more

Lauren Covington is a 23 year old student and employee at the newspaper. Out with her friends she seems happy go lucky but at home she's domineered by her father, Alex. Alex is a control fanatic who physically and verbally abuses his family.

Enemies And Playmates (Darcia Helle) is a suspense novel. Lauren Covington should have the perfect life. Her father is a high powered attorney, she lives in a beautiful home and is attending a prestigious university. But her family life is not what it appears to be. Her father is abusive, manipulative and controlling. Lauren is tired of the lies and hiding her family secrets.

Jesse Ryder enters her life. He worked for her father at one time, and knows the truth about Alex Covington. Soon

This read like an author's debut. I was surprised to find that it wasn't. If you are looking for a nice piece of fluff, this isn't it. Very dark, and at times just made me angry because of the characters lack of development. I made myself finish it. I'm glad this was a freebie!

I am one of those fortunate ones that didn't come from an abusive home. I do have 2 friends that I knew in Jr high and high school who WERE though. I think I can relate to Carrie from this story - the helpful friend who is in the dark about knowing what to do to fix things.

This story was awesome - I really loved it - I've read about "Oh I was abused as a child which is why I turned out this way" in many other books - but this book is first hand information as it all happens right now.

This is a fast-paced action packed book! There are so many twists and turns, most of them leaving me with my mouth open as they were so unexpected! Darcia Helle is undoubtedly a talented writer who knows how to hook the reader and keep them interested with a well structured and fulfilling storyline. This story would make a good film, I'd love to see it on the big screen.

“Wife Beater Meets His Match”

In this suspenseful and entertaining novel by Darcia Helle, Alex Covington is a powerful attorney who beats his wife and terrorizes his children (his college student daughter Lauren is the protagonist). When Alex tries to add private investigator Jesse Ryan to his corrupt payroll, he finally meets a man strong enough to challenge his vicious ways.

The story begins as Lauren’s friends drag her to a nightclub where she meets Jesse, and their mutual attraction is

I'm not quite sure how I feel about this book yet. I found myself constantly annoyed with both Lauren and Jesse. Their constant "I'm worried about you, don't be worried, I love you, I love you too, I'll tell you later how I got hurt, okay I love you, I love you too, I want him dead, me too, but we can't kill him, oh yeah right"

I just felt like a big majority of the book was random almost-death experiences that they seemed to get out of all okay every single time, no one really hurt. Not badly

Though the cover of this book would have one believe it's a romance novel, it actually read more like a suspense/thriller to me. But I don't get paid to categorize books.

Anyway, this book kept my interest somewhat, but overall I wasn't too impressed with the plot. Also, I didn't get emotionally involved in ANYONE in this story, and there were a lot of reasons I should have as it dealt with some pretty heavy topics. But not once did I feel anxious for them, scared, excited, happy, sad... I got

This book was a page-turner and I found myself looking forward to the times that I'd get a chance to sit down and read more of this compelling romance/thriller. It kept me up several nights, glued to the page. Readers will sympathize with the main character Lauren and her love interest Jesse as they deal with her callous and shady father. This is a book in which readers know who the enemy is and are captivated to see how Lauren and Jesse will overcome all the danger thrown in their path. Author ...more

Ahhhh...I tried...really tried. Liked Jesse's character. The story had a good promise, but never really drew me in. I kind of wonder what happens, but not enough to slough through the last half of the book. The love scenes were luke warm at best and not enough to keep me interested in the very slowly unraveling plot. I don't feel like I care that much about the characters, even after reading 50%. Giving it 2 stars instead of 1 for a DNF because the domestic abuse angle is more well done than the ...more

Seriously ... WOW. I've read so many stating this book was dark and only got darker. Okay, yes it's not a topic that should be taken lightly. Darcia, however, made this book more about the air of mystery and finding a solution. There are definitely elements of what went on, but a lot of it use your imagination because it really is just skimmed over, well the details of the abuse were. Alex Covington was pretty much the evil incarnate himself. Wow I just couldn't get over the lengths he went to ...more

I shouldn't have worried. Darcia Helle's as awesome a writer as she is a person. Which is to say Enemies and Playmates was one of the most wickedly fun cat-and-mouse tales I've come across in a long time. Alex Covington is a phenomenally

In a recent interview I was asked to note my three favorite authors. I named Nelson DeMille, Robert Crais, and Darcia Helle. After reading Enemies and Playmates, I may have to change the order of those selections.

This is a classic tale of good versus evil. Ms. Helle does a masterful job of crafting characters that the reader truly cares about early on in the plot. The protagonist, Lauren, is a 22 year old woman who has grown up in a household with an abusive father, Alex, who is a lawyer with

As others have mentioned, this book deals with very dark subject matter. Alex Covington is a man obsessed with power. He is violent, sadistic and controlling, in business as well as in play. His daughter Lauren is desperate to get out from under his thumb, but even she has no idea the lengths to which her father will go to keep her boyfriend, private investigator Jesse Ryder, from helping her.

This book is completely unlike anything I usually read. I don't consider this to be romance, although it

This was an ok book, but it didn't really pull me in. I liked Jesse and Tim and later Rob, but the rest of the characters just kinda got on my nerves. I would say I wanted to knock them upside the head, but that would kinda defeat the I read the whole book, which had me surprising myself but I really don't like not finishing. I can only think of one or two books that I haven't been able to finish. This book seemed more focused on the situations than on the relationship so I ...more

I am happily surprised with how much I enjoyed this book and how I ripped through it once I got started. Initially, I hesitated to pick this one up because I'd seen it billed as a suspense or detective story mixed with romance. When I hear "romance" I think of the classic cliches of the genre and this usually doesn't appeal to me. However, with "Enemies and Playmates", Helle has engineered a world bereft of the usual cliches and instead crafted it with all the pacing and movement of the best ...more

What a great story! I didn't it expect it to go the way it did...but it pulled me in from the start and wouldn't let me go. I found myself thinking about it when I wasn't reading it and couldn't wait to pick it back up again! The characters and situations are very real and at times I found myself feeling so bad for this family and everything they had to put up with and praised Jesse for his determination to make sure justice was served. I also loved the love that Jesse and Lauren shared ...more

A decently written plot with nice characters but lots of unexplained elements. How does a lawyer in a small town (atleast it seems to be a small town) yield so much power over everyone in his sphere? How can he be mistreating so many women and not one complains? (his wife, daughter, secretary, receptionist, daughter's gf, an escort girl....6 at the very least). How can the Police Captain order a major chunk of the police force to work for the bad guy, misplacing evidence, falsifying evidence etc ...more

To start I would like to say I'm very pleasantly surprised, but that is maybe an unfair phrase. I chose this book for two reasons: one, it was a free selection on amazon for my kindle. two, i was under the impression that it was an erotic novel. that being said my first impression was disappointment that it was not in fact erotica. Once the realization hit me that I was reading a suspense/romance I truely began to enjoy the story line and characters. The romance was quiet and overshadowed by the ...more

This book was AMAZING!! I got it for free on Amazon and what a surprise!!

Please don't think that you are getting erotica based on the cover and the title. It is not erotica. This is a suspenseful story with that deals with domestic violence and has a bit of romance as well.

I was instantly swept into the story and could not put the book down. Read it in one sitting.

Loved Lauren and Jesse (man did I LOVE Jesse!!). And I HATED Alex. HATED. Alex. I wanted to give him a taste of his own medicine.

Another book I have no desire to read, ever. Just the cover is enough to convince me that that book is not for me. However, I still own a copy. Taking up valuable bytes on my harddisk.

A friend of Louise's read and liked it, so, finding out it was an Amazon free download, I was instructed to download a copy. Of course, now, she has no recollection of these events whatsoever, and claims no desire to read it either...
I'll admit that suspense is not my favorite book genre. With that said, this book seemed undeveloped. The father in the family is an all around scum bag lawyer who doesn't stop at anything to succeed including tampering with evidence, killing people, having affairs, beating the crap out of his family, etc. Still, the characters weren't well developed and I didn't have a clear understanding about what motivated any of the characters.

This e book was a great value. $2.99 for a 312 page story. I would say this was more thriller/suspense than romance.

I did enjoy it but felt the characters were a bit under developed. This may come from the fact that the romance was very secondary to the villianus plot. Alex was a horrid man but I'm not sure I cared enough or hated him enough.

$2.99 well spent. I would read this author again.
