After reading 'a last wild place' I picked this up without hesitation. This is less about the writing and more about the experiences the book conveys. This book is filled with actual accounts of the author taking in animals, caring for them, and nurturing them back to health for the wild. It was such a wholesome and raw read - what this man did deserves so much recognition. I don't know how to express how precious his writing, accounts, and observations are - it is literally a one in a million account of the highlands you will ever read. I gain more and more respect for the author through each book and hope to get my hands on another soon!!

Over the years, Mike Tomkies cared for many wild animals at his remote highland cottage, restoring them to health and releasing them back into the wild. This book tells the stories of some of those animals, such as barn owls, foxes, badgers and pine martens.
While Tomkies occasionally gets bogged down with detail, he writes in an informative and entertaining way, and his love and concern for wild creatures and the world they inhabit shines through the text. Beautifully illustrated with the author's own photographs, this is a book well worth reading for anyone who enjoys learning about the amazing wildlife of the United Kingdom. One of his best books in my view.
