This book contains prose and poetry from the greats: Ben Jonson, John Donne, John Milton, Robert Herrick, George Herbert. Their original conceits lift the soul and open the mind. I read this volume in college. I now sample from it regularly to fill my reservoir of beauty so I can face the rigors of life. The editors, Witherspoon and Warnke, selected well what to include--from the woodcuts of Francis Quarles to excerpts from Izaak Walton's Complete Angler to the essays of Sir Francis Bacon to the Pilgrim's Progress by Bunyan. It is a feast for the hungry lover of the English language, and it covers the topic well for anyone who would enjoy an anthology of the time. Highly recommended.
