Martin Harry Greenberg was an American academic and speculative fiction anthologist. In all, he compiled 1,298 anthologies and commissioned over 8,200 original short stories. He founded Tekno Books, a packager of more than 2000 published books. In addition, he was a co-founder of the Sci-Fi Channel.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book.

This is a collection of short stories from authors who I can only describe as solid mid-listers. I've never heard of them, but according to their bios most of them have sold at least a dozen novels. So the words are put together in a way that meets the standards of the genre, but the stories themselves are wildly variable: A few serious meditations on warfare with AI, orbital weapons, and other wizbang tech; A few meditations on the psychological horrors of war; And a few stinkers; But mostly this book is utterly forgettable. Well, a decent diversion for an afternoon, and another notch in the bookrace.

All I wanted was a halfway decent Starship Troopers pastiche.

Worth reading for the Longyear story alone. Yeah, many of the stories are middle-of-the-road and two of them have similar twists. Greenberg also edited "If I Were an Evil Overlord" and I felt these stories were overall slightly higher quality than those, but it might have been that I like space marines more than I like overlords and henchmen. It could also just be that I adore Barry B. Longyear and would read his grocery lists since reading Enemy Mine. Clearly Greenberg front-loaded this anthology with the best story, but they're all okay and some are pretty damn good.

Solid anthology. Nice mix of different types of stories. The focus is generally on the people, not the hardware. On the downside:two of the stories have the same "surprise" twist at the end-- and neither was really a surprise.
