First Shapes in Buildings

Rate this book
This innovative shapes book features 12 structures from around the world. Each double-page spread is devoted to one shape, and both two- and three-dimensional shapes (e.g. circle, square, rectangle, cube, pyramid, and cylinder), are included. Each shape is illustrated in its simple geometric form on one side of the spread, while opposite is a full-color photograph of a structure that incorporates that shape. Simple text on each spread explains an aspect of the structure and invites children to imagine what it might be like to be in it or what the people who built it felt about it. This inventive and intriguing approach not only reinforces the learning of everyday shapes — it also inspires children to appreciate some of the world's great structures and the everyday environment around them.

Photographs of buildings are fun to explore as you search for the featured shape on each page. Serves as an introduction to architecture as well.
