Selections from a Victorian naval surgeons journals travelling mainly to China. Nice mix of descriptions of battles, social life and general naval work. What makes this a four star book though are the beautiful water colours by the journal’s author. He was a good enough artist to have sketches published in the Illustrated London News. There are a couple of fold out pages for large panoramic pictures.
Incredible book, blows the mind to think this all happened. Cleverly edited so that it although it is taken from Cree's journals the book reads very well. Normally a reader of novels but this was so well written I loved it.
