A must read for those who need to be reminded of the soul crushing aspects of academic science.

Synopsis: Two men get into a scientific cat fight to see who can first identify the stuff your brain oozes. Spoiler: They have to share the Nobel prize with the guy they hate.

I can't believe this was considered popular science back in 1981! It is heavy on the biochemistry and bureaucracy (lots of references to journals, conferences, academic hierarchies). I'm doubtful this book would appeal to anyone without a prior interest in neuro/endocrinology. Nonetheless, it is a detailed and scathing review of some of the worst of competitiveness and incentives in academic science.
