Suddenly, a yellowish light became visible behind a small open hatch in the centre of what she knew to be the building’s boiler. As she looked towards the iron beast with its one flickering yellow eye, the air around the opening ignited, sending flames reaching towards the dark liquid that covered the floor.

The room exploded with fire and black smoke.

As the flames reached her, Cassandra’s last thought, rather than fear, was that she was finally being set free.

Mike and Lisa assumed that buying a new-build house meant that nobody else had ever lived there before them.

They were wrong. Dead wrong.

Thank you to Henry Roi Pr for hosting this book tour and providing me with an e-copy. All opinions remain my own.

This was an entertaining slow descent into madness, but there was more to it, with logical reasoning, theories, and history woven together to create an enjoyable read.

I really liked that it wasn't all blamed on the stay at home mum and that a cop out excuse of "going crazy" wasn't put on her. Both Lisa and Mike went through the supernatural experiences that shouldn't have been happening in their new home and were able to validate each others odd experiences and get to the route of the problem together.

Lisa wasn't super likeable. I found her unnecessarily rude, glaring at people when she felt they weren't being truthful... I mean you could just call them out on their lies. But I did love her resilience in hounding Walter for information (though she was certainly severe at times).
I quite liked Mike. I think he had a lot to deal with and really tried to make the best out of the situations he found himself in. I think he could have pushed harder with the Kerry problem though.

Kerry... bloody Kerry. Despite being clearly an awful person, it was funny how she had all of HR wrapped around her little finger. I was internally screaming every time Mike and his team weren't believed. It just didn't make sense, why didn't they have a work union? I thought it was clever how all the work stress was used as almost a red herring... could Mike just be having a really crap time of life, to be seeing the things he sees, or is it much deeper than that? I think the added pressure of the cross state move, to the new high pressure job and all the issues at the new house really added to this overwhelming spiral for the family, which I think landed strength to the depth of the story.

I do think it should have been much clearer as to who Samantha was, especially with such a human name. I thought the first time I read it, it was a red herring to make me think there was early cracks in sanity and that she'd be a little ghost child just chilling with them or something... but no... she was just the family cat that was mentioned every now and then.
I think it was too convenient to have her and Kevin, the young child, out of the way for some parts. I felt like everyone should have had more stake in the haunting, but I'm not too pressed because I would have been devastated if anything eluded to the harm of the cat!

I would have loved to have had more details, earlier on regarding why the house was acting the way it was. I feel like we got a lot of information or stalling that could have been edited out.

Overall, this wasn't as horror scary as I was expecting, but it had some great tension, atmosphere building, genuine family and work issues and an interesting history behind the haunting.

Pick it up, give it a go & enjoy! >(^_^)<

Thank you to the publisher for a ARC copy of this book.

Happy family the Ellis’s have a new adventure and pack up and move to what they believe is their perfect family home.
New job, young son and starting a new life.
Should have realised something was wrong when their son said he doesn’t want to go inside the new home.
Mike work life becomes stressful and Lisa is constantly convincing he is hullunciating even though she is seeing things.
Nigel is a brilliant character as the psychic. I must admit I am more thriller reader than horror but this book definitely had the edge of my seat waiting to see what was happening with just enough horror to spooky me. Perfect mix for me.

Loved this book, definitely need to read more of the authors work.

It was such a tense and atmospheric read, the beginning really pulled me in, in a way I wish we had of had more of the institute, but this also meant the ‘House’ was the main character.

The bits with the house were on point, so freaky, loved how it evolved (restored?) around them, for some reason the bed really scared me 😅

I will definitely be adding this to my spooky season re-reads. 4.5 ⭐️

I really liked this one, and I will definitely have to check out more of Chris Coppel’s writing. There were times when I got chills up my spine while I was reading. I couldn’t put it down. I knew where it was going but that didn’t stop me from enjoying it. And the ending 😤 I do feel like it could have used a bit more editing, but it was still a really good read!

Mike and Lisa moved cross country for a huge new opportunity for Mike’s career. After renting for a bit, they decide to buy a house. Not just any house, Lisa’s dream house that wasn’t even finished being built yet. When strange occurrences start happening, they can be written off. Until they can’t.

Mark, Lisa , and their young son, Henry have moved into a brand new home in a new development. However, things in the house seem off and soon they begin to believe that there is something sinister inhabiting their home. But a house with no history can't possibly be haunted. Or can it?

I felt a building sense of dread as the story progressed, and I found myself constantly wondering how much more the family could tolerate before breaking. The house is a character itself and I was both fascinated and appalled by its dark, tragic history.

I enjoyed the relationship between Mike and Lisa and reading their backstories gave me a deeper understanding of why each reacted the way he or she did. Lisa was a woman who was not going to back down and I was better able to understand why and what made her tick due to the chapters that explored the characters' personal histories.

If you enjoy stories about things that go bump in the night, then this is one you should check out. The author takes a frequently-used trope in ghost stories but twists it in a way that I've never seen before.

Thank you to the author, Chris Coppel, for the review copy.

Many thanks to Henry Roi Pr for providing me with an e-copy and a place on the tour.

I've read Chris's other works "Legacy" and the sequel "Lifetimes" which I enjoyed so I know his writing style which is unique.

The Ellis family have packed up and moved to what they believe is their dream home. As soon as they move in their son suffers a headache which it's strange because he was fine a minute ago. Later in the story, we find out those "Headaches" are actually like a sixth sense, things he sees that no one else can. Weird/creepy things start to happen at the house but surely it's a new house, or is it?

The story grabbed me from the beginning, loved the weird/creepy things happening. For example, why is it so cold in the garden when the temperature is around the 90s? Loved the ending and Chris has left it open for future expansion which I hope comes sooner rather than later.

Overall a great story and highly recommended.

I'm also reviewing another novel from Chris called "Liner" which will be later in the month, looking forward to reading it.

‘Get back in there you evil demon’ - A terrific horror story!

California author Chris Coppel is the author of many screenplays and has taught advanced screenwriting at UCLA. He is also an accomplished drummer and guitarist. His chosen genre for this novels is horror stories and to date he has published FAR FROM BURDEN DELL, LEGACY, THE LODGE, LAKEBED, LUCY, LINER, LUCK, LOGISTICS: A CHRISTMAS STORY, LINGERING, and now LUNACY. He obviously loves the letter ‘L’!

Said before, it is refreshing to encounter an author who is able to transport the reader into the realm of terror with the facility that Chris Coppel has achieved. Having read five of his novels, this reader has developed great respect for Chris’ talent. Able to set atmospheric tension, even in the opening lines, guarantees the novel will imbed in the reader’s mind: ‘Cassandra had no idea that she was about to die. She was awakened from her laudanum-induced sleep by two orderlies. She could tell it was either very late or very early as the darkness outside her cramped room was utterly black and showed no sign of residual dusk or impeding dawn. They dragged her from her bed and forced her down three flights of stairs into the dark basement. This time something was different about the underground room…Judging by the crying and shouting for help, she knew there had to be dozens of other patients down there with her….’ The book’s title suggests the location - Sunny Meadows, a facility for the psychiatric care - in 1932.

Even the brief synopsis is offered in a mysterious manner – ‘Suddenly, a yellowish light became visible behind a small open hatch in the centre of what she knew to be the building’s boiler. Dead wrong.’

Fast paced and well sculpted, this is a horror story that rises to the top of the genre. Chris Coppel owns the gift!

Lunacy was such a gripping book, I was hooked from the first chapter. I thought the plot was written well and it had a good pace to it. I thought the pace built up and as more paranormal events happened. I was eager to see how the first chapter which was written in the past, would link to the rest of the book which was happening in present day. The links were made and things became very sinister and scary. At times, this book did make me feel scared, I remember at one point I was reading while waiting for my toast and when the toaster popped up, I jumped! The ending of this book was satisfying until I read the epilogue, I don’t want to say much to spoil the book but their paranormal joinery hasn’t ended.

I thought the characters were well developed. Mike and Lisa finally thought they were getting their dream house but it soon turned into a nightmare for them. At first they were unsure on what was causing these events in their house but their suspicions grew when these events became more constant. The author included a background for both Mike and Lisa which allowed the reader to gain an insight on why this house meant so much for them both after moving around so much in their childhood. I liked the inclusion of the pet and their child, Kevin, because they are the ones to feel strange energy around them more than adults.

I thought this book was written well and I enjoyed the concept of the haunted house. The author created such a creepy and scary atmosphere around the book and the house. I could sense when something bad was going to happen while reading. I felt like the use of ghosts and paranormal activity in this book felt very real and the reactions of the family was real as well. I would highly recommend this book because it was truly scary and it was very realistic.

I was given a copy to review for a
book tour. My reviews are always honest and all opinions are my own. #Lunacy #ChrisCoppel
#HenryRoiPR #BookTourReview #Horror #BlackTideBookTours #BookReview #gifted #ad

Lunacy is an interesting and more realistic look at the idea of the ‘Haunted House’ horror genre. While a slow burn to start the book has an eerie and unsettling quality over pure horror and shock and really builds to a brilliant end. Mike and Lisa are tired of renting with a young child and dreaming of a second they want a place to call home. They assumed that buying a new-build would mean nobody else had lived there before them. They were wrong. The dream of a new home slowly begins to warp into a nightmare.

I did find the start of the book a little bit of a slow burn but when the family finally moved into the house I began to pick up. I particularly liked the interesting way Coppel leads the haunted house narrative and builds the sense of unease around the building. I wouldn’t say this was outright horror in the typical haunting sense. It is more a creeping, eerie horror that slowly builds throughout, almost psychological in nature. I still fully enjoyed this one though and would recommend it to fans of the genre.

The writing style is easy to follow but also perfectly builds the tension and sense of uneasy in the setting. The characters are also generally well rounded and believable. What I also liked, although I dislike spoilers as such was the surprisingly ‘happy’ ending of the novel. I am more used to the horror novels ending with an okay to bad ending rather than a rather happier note with everything seemingly resolved.

This is my first Chris Coppel book but it most certainly will not be my last. If you are looking for an interesting and realistic take on the haunted house horror genre this one is definitely one for you.

Nice place ... But is it haunted? Now, there’s the question, the notion that’s been beaten to death, revived, and beaten to death all over again in genre fiction. It’s a cliché that can be measured in square feet. And it comes with its own real estate listing. A couple buys a place, idyllic on the outside, nightmarish on the inside. Soon, strange things begin to occur. Who’re you gonna call?
Yes, this book even has a ghostbuster, of a sort. The main plot revolves around all those tried-and-true clichés but it is objectively a pretty decent take on them.
I’ve been reading Coppel for a while now, not so much because he’s the best thing out there, but because he’s so reliable. Mediocre but reliably so, you always get exactly what you expect with him, pretty much. This book is no exception. In fact, it’s better than most of his work. So much so, I'm going to round up my rating. While not literary per se, his writing is very nicely paced, realistic with details, and humorous in banter.
The plot is basic enough to explain: a family moves from West to East coast, gets a picturesque property in Northern Virginia, commuting distance to DC, and starts nesting. Only their next keeps getting weirder and weirder. You think you want extra square footage? Sure, yeah, but you wouldn’t want a self-expanding place to live it, that’s just creepy. So what pushes people out? What’s enough and what’s too much? Would a metal bed with restraints in the attic do the trick? No? Well, how about an antique chamber pot, poop and all? Fireless smoke? Okay, okay, here’s a doozy … what about an unshakable certainty that you and your family are not alone?
Read on and find out what the family in the book does. It’s a fun, quick read. Recommended for genre fans.

My Review and Thoughts:

Another tight solid horror mystery filled suspense tale. Weaved through actions and intense moments that grab you, place you there and in away smacks the crap out of you with written perfection.

This is a new voice of a haunted tale. A priceless brilliance in intensity and clarification of the word haunting. A hair raising spiraling nerve inducing plot that never lets up.

Brutal darkened atmosphere. A rich tale of characters and actions and most of all the spooky stuff you need to haunt your nightmares.

Coppel is a wonderful imaginative storyteller that truly weaves nightmares into reality and displays a playful brilliance with words that stick deep into your mind as you read. A wonderful written horror suspense tale that I felt lingered with me even after the story was told. I felt like I was drained and that's the beauty of great storytelling, and Coppel is that reality.

Truly a gifted writer. Truly a gifted haunting book. A solid experience that I enjoyed so much. I love when you read a book and that book becomes apart of you, no matter if it's in nightmare form or dramatic prose. Lunacy is a book that needs to be read and experienced and most of all enjoyed.

Loved the atmosphere of the story. Great characters and deep intense unfolding moments that bring each page to life.

Would I Return to it Again: I have become an instant fan of Coppel. A great gifted storyteller that demands to be read.

Would I Recommend: Absolutely. Lovers of Horror and suspense will find themselves engaged into a wonderfully intense story that satisfies to the very end.

My Rating: 4 out of 5

Four Final Words: Slick, unique prose. Haunting.

Thank you to the publisher for the ARC.

This horror novel gives a new spin on the haunted house genre. How can your home be haunted if it's a brand new build?

Young couple Mike had Lisa have had enough of constantly moving and renting so together with their pre-school son they take the plunge to buy their dream home.

What they don't know is what the reader knows from the first chapter, that long before this housing development, another building existed on the site and there was a horrific crime.

This gives the reader a false sense of comfort that we know what sort of supernatural occurrences we can expect.

Where the novel excels is in gradually escalating the sense of dread and bewilderment felt by this young family and the realisation that they could be in real danger.

The clever device of the gradual unexplained changes to their home linking to the psychic resonance of past events felt very new and created a real sense of stress and worry for Mike and Lisa. Even more so when a new arrival at Mike's new job creates problems at work and worries about their child's health exacerbates an already tense situation.

The first 100 pages were a real slow burn. There were flashbacks to the main characters childhoods and a sub plot with Mike's work which didn't feel that relevant although thankfully there was a very satisfying conclusion to the subplot near the end of the novel.
Once they were in their new home the pace picked up and I sped through the next 300 pages.

Some really good eerie and frightening moments all leading to a satisfying conclusion.

Lunacy follows the Ellis family as they move across the country in anticipation for Mike starting a new job. Sick of renting, they decide now is also the right time to look into buying their own home and can't believe their luck when a new build property becomes available. But are things just a little too perfect?

I really enjoyed the premise of this book; after all, people all over the world buy new build homes and, usually, it's a given that nothing has lived there before. Yet, do we all really know the history of the land the properties are built on? I haven't read this author before but am a huge fan of this genre of fiction and so was very excited to read Lunacy.
I found the writing flowed well, and was very easy to read. The chapters were a good length and built a good level of suspense and unease as the story unfolded. The author does use a lot of description and has some chapters focussed on the backstory of the Ellises which adds some volume to the length of the book.
Personally, I didn't find the story too scary overall; instead I found the odd moment uncomfortable, rather than chilling, as eerie happenings picked up pace towards the end of the book. I found the idea new and fresh, and enjoyed reading it.

Would recommend if you're looking for an uneasy read, rather than all out horror.

Holy Crap! This is by far one of the most “realistic” takes on a horror genre book. This is the first book I read by Chris Coppel, and it will definitely not be the last!

This book had me intrigued, interested and all the other “i words” I can’t think of at the moment. The main protagonists are Mike and Lisa. They decided to purchase a new house that was just recently build because they wanted it to truly be their own. A place no one else has lived before. But you know how that old saying goes, “the road to hell is paved with good intentions.” The couple soon find out how wrong they were in the thought the house was only theirs.

This was so well written that every now and again I would casually glance around me before I kept reading. This book wasn’t so far fetched that it was unbelievable in the least. I audibly gasped once or twice during a chapter. I loved the feeling of, “hey… this can happen to you too.” The descriptions in this book were so good, I felt like I was watching a movie and I loved it!

I’ve been telling my friends and fiancé about this book and urging them to read it. That they wouldn’t be disappointed in the least. I highly recommend this book, it’s that freaking good! An easy 5 out of 5 stars for me. Go get this book it’s amazing! Now excuse me while I go track down an autographed copy for my trophy book shelf.

Holy crap was this book good!!!

Disclaimer: I was sent an ARC copy of this on the understanding it is a psychological thriller. If I had known it was horror/ghost I wouldn't have started it as this is a genre I don't read, get scared by, and usually dislike. This makes it hard for me to review objectively, so I've kind of gone at it as both a writer and a reader.

Having said that, I read it. In places the writing is a bit laboured and gives far too much detail, which ordinarily would distract from the story, but in this case it was useful as it kept the horror/ghost elements at a bit of a distance and enabled me to keep going. About halfway through, when the 'ghosty' parts got more intense, I actually decided to quit and deleted the book... but... the next day, I realised I kind of wanted to know what happened and downloaded it again to finish, and found myself engrossed enough to finish that night. So, in terms of story, I would give this four stars, but in terms of writing, I would have liked less info-dumping and unnecessary detail and (if I were a horror fan to start with) more descriptive writing to immerse the reader more, except, as it was a ghost story, I was immersed quite far enough!! I also strongly suggest the description be amended to include horror or ghost.

When Lisa and Mike move for Mike’s job, they think all their dreams will come true when they find a newly built house to buy. Mike never experienced life living in one spot for long, so when they buy this house, he couldn’t be more satisfied with his life, wife, and new job. There’s only one problem: something sinister lurks around this freshly built house. Soon everyone will become a victim of the house, and the consequences will be far-reaching.

Wow! This book was everything I expected it to be and more. The suspense build-up was perfect. You are hooked from the first chapter. What a way to start a book! I loved all the characters and couldn’t put this book down. Sinister undertones can be felt throughout this book, making it much more compelling. You feel this book as much as you read it.

This was my first book by Coppel, but it won’t be my last. I have another book tour for one of his other books coming soon, so be on the lookout for that!

I recommend it to every horror book-loving person. You won’t regret picking this book up.

#ad I received a free copy of this book, but also bought my own paperback copy, I leave this review of my own accord. Thanks to @henryroipr , @tide.phoenix.coffee , and the author.

This is the 2nd book I have read by this author and it has only gotten even better. Mike and Lisa move their family from West Coast LA to East Coast Washington DC for a new job for Mike. They get an amazing deal on a new home built in suburbia but after moving in weird things start to happen. Their son has weird headaches, sees dead people, the house has weird vibes, they have phantom smoke, and extreme alternating temperatures. A brand new house can’t be haunted, can it? This book was absolutely fantastic in how the story was laid out, adding tidbits at the right places at the right time that even I was a little spooked to read what was going to happen next. With an ominous ending, this book rounded out to be one of my top spooky reads ever. Chris Coppel is a master spooky haunted house story teller that nightmares are made of and this book should absolutely be translated to the screen.

A dream new home is not all it’s set out to be. Previous tenants remain, they are tormented and looking to move on. Lisa and Mikes new home is drastically transforming and they need help to bring calm to their new home.
Chris Coppel cleverly brings a house to life and puts chills up your spine. The story of Lisa and Mike’ life is interwoven through the horror story they are living. This book keeps you on the edge and if it was a film you would want to watch parts hidden behind a cushion.
Kevin, Mike and Lisa’s son was a a large feature in the story and would have liked him to have been more involved later in the story, although that may have made the story a step to far terrifying.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story, edge of the seat thriller.
Thank you Chris for the ARC. A pleasure to read another of your books.

First I want to thank the opportunity of reviewing this wonderful book, Chris Coppel is an amazing author.

The beggining has ben slow but page by page I start to have the need to know how the plot continued.

As for the characters, I loved them, their personality, tenacity and abilities made them unique.

Both Lisa and Mike have been memorable but I feel like maybe I've connected more with Lisa.

Chris's ability to create a dark atmosphere is incredible. I felt watched, as if I were in a movie, he has definitely brought life to the house.

The ending has been exquisite, without a doubt I highly recommend the author, I hope to be able to read it in the future.

Valoración personal:

Obra en general: 8/10

Personajes: 8/10

Narración: 8/10.

Ambientación: 8/10.

I really enjoyed this spooky read! This was an entertaining haunted house story with fun and surprising twists throughout. I liked all of the main characters - I loved Mike and Lisa's banter and thought they were very thoughtful and caring parents for Kevin.
I was a bit thrown off by the prologue, as I thought the haunting would focus on Cassandra, but she's never directly brought up again. However, I did enjoy the original twist of what was actually haunting the house.
The different incidents that occurred in the house throughout the book kept me wanting to read more, and I couldn't put it down because I wanted to know what was going on. I was a bit bored by all of Mike's work issues and didn't really see the point in all the drama with Kerry (aside from it leading to him staying home), and I would probably have preferred if it had been summarized the way Lisa's work was.
Overall, though, this book kept me on the edge of my seat, and - based on the epilogue - if there's ever a sequel written, I'd be very interested in reading it!

Oh what a haunted house this family lives in. They were sold a ‘brand new’ house but what would begin to happen soon, would be beyond the family’s experience. Little clues started popping out as the family moved into their new home. Little Kevin was the first to be affected. Headaches and feeling off. Then Mike and Lisa experienced their own issues. I was surprised at how open minded the adults were when told the house was haunted. When they thought they free from the spirit, they could not know the level of crazy that they were about be immersed. I think when the basement started growing, I would have been gone. They stayed brave people and I have to give the props for wanting to figure out was on the land before their house. I really liked the way the book ended. I can see there will need to another book.

What a entertaining and thrilling story! It was well-written and intriguing. The characters were well-developed, interesting, and relatable. The House is a character itself. I love the overall ominous and creepy feel of the building. The tension in this story kept me on the edge of my seat. Chris writes in such a way that you can’t help but be pulled in right from the start. I read this in one day. I just couldn’t put it down! This is a short review, but only because I don’t want to give too much away. I highly recommend it for horror fans. Thank you to Henry Roi PR and the author for gifting me this exciting book in exchange for an honest review.

This book was an amazing book. It had all the mystery, suspense and scary build up. I felt I was watching this in my head like a film. It did a great job in bringing in the suspense and mystery. I loved it and enjoy it. I’m not a huge fan of mystery but this book is one that I won’t forget. The characters, the build up was worth it. If I had my doubts about buying a new house this just made me level up that thought lol. It is a slow build up because it is introducing the lives of the characters. By introducing their regular life we get to see which parts became chaotic for them or different.

Mike & Lisa move into a home at a bargain of a price with their son Kevin, little did they know the price isn't the only thing that's killer! Strange happenings are going on in the household that is rich with history.

This gave me the heebie jeebies & I kept jumping at little noises in my own house! This books is over 400 pages long but I read it so fast! I had to know what was going to happen next! The end left me wanting more & I hope there will be a sequel! Maybe a deep dive of the past

I had high hopes for this novel. I have wanted a modern horror story and to be on my seat the whole time. Unfortunately this fell flat. Thanks to the prologue, the theme of the haunting of a new build in a new development was set in stone. The characters were compelling, I would love to learn more about the medium & his wife and more about the coworker with the destructive tendencies. Yet the "scare" and the "horror" never arrived.
And yet is was an enjoyable read for an afternoon.

This book started off with a shocking earthquake and pulls you straight in. Already we feel for Lisa and Rachel I liked the bond they have. Mike and Lisa move and mystery things start to happen. A Cozy Mystery.

Another extraordinary read by Chris Coppel!
This story keeps you on the edge of your seat, you will not want to put your book or E-reader down! I felt like I was watching a lifetime movie as I read it.

I wasn't really sure what to expect with this book... Right from the Prologue the suspension built.

We meet the Ellis family who think they have found their dream home but as soon as they move in they discover things are not as picture perfect as they had hoped.

Just when you think you know what's going on a completely different revelation comes to light leaving you with more questions and the need to know what is behind it all.

At the conclusion you get that feeling of satisfaction that everything is as it should be until those last few lines that keep you thinking long after you finish the book.

I loved it from start to finish and rate it 3.5 stars out of 5.

Thank you to Henry Roi PR and Chris Coppel for the opportunity to read and review this book.
