About the author

Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 "because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has made his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of the literature of the West."

Tagore modernised Bengali art by spurning rigid classical forms and resisting linguistic strictures. His novels, stories, songs, dance-dramas, and essays spoke to topics political and personal. Gitanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced), and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) are his best-known works, and his verse, short stories, and novels were acclaimed—or panned—for their lyricism, colloquialism, naturalism, and unnatural contemplation. His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India's Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar Bangla.

2.75⭐ Probably not the best starting point to read Tagore.
Some were rather interesting, some were just meh and didn't leave much of an impression. But, there was a time when these stories were so exotic, they intrigued the readers and fueled their curiosity about the world.

This is a short stories book, which is a quick and easy read for all. The stories are okay containing a mix of Indian traditions and western style, which might have been exotic to read when first published early 20th century. However, in today's global context with many Indians authors published and translated around the world, these stories are simple and forgetable.

An interesting book, compiling several short stories set in India, quite diverse, reflecting the life of common people during that time. It stroke me that the author so boldly represents the situation of women in his country (well, in some stories more than others).

One of the best 2 Euro I have ever spent. Simple and eloquent, this collection of short stories constitutes a reflection on life and human society (societies) that is universally relevant.
