Time Flies Like Cow

by Geoffroy Birtz

Time Flies Like Cow is an essay on communication and perspective disguised as an amusing novel. The often humorous prose follows the narrator on a day out, driving around completing errands. Prompted by what is observed, the narrator reflects on the nature of various concepts; from the economy to education, from quantum physics to social concerns. The author displays a unique and insightful approach which depicts how communication skills and observer perspective influence the comprehension and conceptualization of ideas.

No plot, no character or character growth, no story. It's a series of unconnected essays vaguely dressed up as someone going about their day, and I understand and appreciate what the author was trying to do. However, it falls flat because the narrator comes off as a cocky, holier-than-thou asshole in tone. The essays themselves range from attempted witticisms to some actual wit, but on the whole, the book would have been better off ditching the attempt at making this a story and just presenting it for what it is- a series of observations about things in the world.

I found this quite entertaining. The author describes a day of running errands in great detail. Many of the events are interesting and amusing. Along the way, the author uses situations he encounters to opine on a variety of topics, such as inefficiency in government, the teaching profession, and the theory of relativity and the space-time continuum. While I disagreed with many of his conclusions, his logic was reasonable and humorous.

Anyone with even a mild interest in science or math will probably enjoy this book.
