Pretty standard Conan stuff. Whilst not a personal favourite selection of cases, there's no denying the importance of the ending when it comes to unravelling one of the bigger mysteries of the series.

This volume of Case Closed starts right off with a shocking moment! We are wondering about a wedding ring and in the mist of all of that…we have a murder case to solve! I think this story while still dealing with murder is a little more intriguing on why Sato has a “wedding” ring on her finger! The next case has the Junior Detectives stuck out in the woods because of a flat tire and stumbling into a mystery murder that seems almost…supernatural. This volume continues to show a lighter side even with some dark premises at times. The next story has to do with a mystery about a photograph. I love this story because it was not a death or something so morbid. I think it’s interesting and is pretty interesting. Rachel’s newest friend “Eisuke” seems…..off in my opinion. This story does not grip me as much as the rest of the book…but still another solid entry.

Good stories, including a real creepy house the kids are forced to stay overnight at, Sato and Takagi have a confusing time with an unexplained engagement ring, and a story furthering the Black Organization plot.

Aoyama Gosho; DETECTIVE CONAN [Meitantei Conan #56]

e/read online; genre: { manga, mystery, shounen }; shelves: |comics, GN, manga, manhua, manhwa|

General Synopsis:
As mentioned above, I am going to write a proper review for this soon, but I have a few books ahead of this one in the queue, so I cannot stop reading DC NOW! That's sacrilege. I have decided to read all the chapters available up to now (we are almost to 1000!) As you can see, I am totally fangirling over here and I don't care, because this is one of my favorite manga series, ever! But all of this aside, there are a few things I wanted to list so I don't need to go back and look everything up when I do finally sit down and write my fangirl review. ✌🏻

V.56, includes Files 576 - 586

DO NOT click on the spoiler link if you don't want to read all the cases in this volume, because it will ruin it for you. On the other hand, if you're a fan like me or are looking for a certain case (and please note, these are how I have set the cases), etc. click away, that's why it's there.

Another spoiler link, so don't click if you don't want to ruin this manga. I am going to include the characters introduced or as the series continues are in this volume. Personally, I think us DC fans love certain characters more than other (yes, Heiji, I mean you!), so sometimes when we are re-reading this series (like all the time!) you might wish to start at a specific case or start when a certain character is involved.

Characters in this volume:

Personal Opinion:
#1, I never call this CASE CLOSED. If you do, you're not a true fan of this series, so don't even bother reading my review or my personal opinions. I'm sorry if I offend you, but you offended me first by telling me you want to read CASE CLOSED or you just love Jimmy.

#2, as you can tell by #1, I read this online. I would never waste my money buying a manga series in english that cannot get the name correct and mess up the main characters to make it appear more "ENGLISH." I am so happy I don't run a blog and this isn't a review on Sailor Moon, #1, because I have a huge soap box tirade against DiC. I also don't think there is anything against reading something online. Comics, which is what manga are, are meant to be read and shared and sometimes paying over $10 is too much in my opinion. Plus, I read the newest chapters as soon as they are released from Japan, because I would never miss a release of DC. So this is my personal shout out to you translators from me, Thank You!

Quick recap for newer readers: Shinichi Kudou (“Jimmy” in the US version) is a teen genius detective. He runs afoul of a mysterious criminal organization, but their assassination attempt instead causes him to shrink to a childlike appearance. To conceal his survival from the organization, Shinichi poses as Conan Edogawa, ward of inept private detective Kogoro Mouri (Richard Moore) and his teenage daughter Ran (Rachel) who happens to be Shinichi’s love interest. Conan continues to solve crimes, though it’s harder to get people to listen to a small kid. See my previous review for more.

The volume to hand is #56. The first story is “Engagement Ring?!” which guest stars Detectives Sato and Takagi, and their slow-moving romance subplot. Sato is suddenly wearing a gold ring on her left hand’s ring finger, and Takagi wasn’t the one who gave it to her. The crime this time is the suicide (or is it?) of a mystery writer that Kogoro was supposed to participate in an interview with. That writer also had a ring that turns out to be an important clue. The case is also complicated in that Sato is one of the few police officers who’s noticed that “Sleeping Mouri” doesn’t move his lips when he gives the real solution, so Conan must figure out other ways to lead the police to the answer.

Next up is “The Witch Legend Mystery” which is loosely based on the story of a lost traveler who seeks shelter with a kindly old woman overnight. He wakes up in the middle of the night due to an odd sound, peeks into the next room, and sees that the woman is actually an onibaba (anthropophagous demon granny) who is sharpening a knife in preparation for butchering him.

In this case, both the Detective Kids with Doctor Agasa, and two “hosts” and their client separately find themselves stranded near a mountain hut, and reluctantly taken in by the scary-looking old woman who lives there. (A “host” is a handsome man who entertains women at a nightclub, getting them to buy drinks and expensive trinkets for them.) The client winds up dead from a slit throat. Was it the old woman, who one of the children saw sharpening a knife in the dead of night, or someone else?

The remainder of the volume is a series of connected stories that deal with the Eisuke Hondo subplot. This mysterious youth is clumsy, but perceptive, and seems to be connected to the supposed missing (actually comatose) Rena Mizunashi, newscaster and associate of the Black Organization. Conan’s Osakan counterpart Heiji Hattori (Harley) has discovered someone who may have know Eisuke’s father; also there’s only one known photograph of the man. But when Conan, Doctor Agasa, and Ai (English name Anita, another survivor of childification) go to check that photo–it’s missing!

That problem resolved, Conan has some new clues. Then Ran suggests visiting a friend of the Mouri family who is a huge Rena fan, to see if Eisuke really is her brother, as the photographs would suggest. Conan and Sonoko (Serena) tag along, and Conan solves a bank transfer scam case on the way. But news footage of Rena only confuses the issue–she apparently can’t be Eisuke’s sister, and the boy’s motives are still murky.

It’s nice to get some plot movement, so this is one of the volumes to pick up if you’re most interested in the “myth arc.’ Otherwise, it’s got a couple of decent mysteries that are typical for the series.

THE MYSTERY OF SATO’S RING AND THE LOCKED-ROOM MURDER
The police department buzzes with speculation when Sato is seen wearing a new ring—one Takagi did not give her. As Takagi wrestles with jealousy, a renowned mystery writer is found poisoned in a locked room, his extravagant diamond ring missing. With only a small window as an exit, the case seems impossible, yet Conan, Sato, and Takagi suspect one of three interviewers is the murderer.

A NIGHT OF TERROR IN THE WOODS
While camping, Agasa and the Detective Boys find themselves stranded and seek shelter in an old woman’s house. That same night, another group also seeks lodging. When Mitsuhiko witnesses something unsettling, terror grips the house as the woman from the group is found outside with her throat slit. The police investigate the household's weapons, but the prime suspect’s knife has mysteriously vanished.

THE STOLEN PHOTOGRAPH AND A HIDDEN TRUTH
Heiji informs Conan of a lead on Eisuke’s father, but the key informant has passed away. When Conan visits the man’s grandson, they discover his photo album stolen and computer files erased. The presence of fresh perspiration suggests the theft was recent, and Conan deduces that the culprit must be one of the three trusted friends with access to the apartment.

A BROTHER’S SEARCH AND A SUSPICIOUS CONNECTION
While visiting a sick friend in the hospital, Conan, Ran, and Sonoko encounter Eisuke, who is searching for his long-lost sister—who happens to resemble Rena Mizunashi. Though Eisuke claims he only wants to thank his sister for saving his life, Conan suspects he already knows Rena’s whereabouts. Their investigation leads them to a devoted fan of Rena, but when they attempt to contact him, they uncover a shocking financial scheme involving a desperate plea for money.

Alles in allem kein wirklich herausragender Band. Normale Fälle, ein klein wenig neue Infos und damit wird Spannung für die folgende Geschichte erzeugt. Man darf sich also freuen!

Okay, not the exact volume I’ve read, but close enough. It’s the correct volume number, but I’ve read it in English. Come on, Goodreads, you can do better! 😉

I’ve finally swung back into the habit of watching and reading Detective Conan/Case Closed and I’m really enjoying my dip into the deep end of this never ending pool of mystery and suspense. Manga is so much fun to read, especially when it’s a good mystery and has character development...err, Conan and Ai excluded.

I give the volume 5 stars and recommend the series. It’s too much fun to pass up, so don’t!

Semakin seru nih. Sambil bertanya dalam hati 'kapan ya Conan balik lagi jadi gede dan menuntaskan dendamnya sama kawanan berbaju hitam?' ;)
