Years of research into the world of wolves combines with mythical tale-telling to present a fantastical adventure set in a world filled with lore. The rules of the Wide Valley wolves were clear: Never consort with humans; never kill a human unprovoked; never allow a mixed-blood wolf to live. But they were rules destined to be broken.
Now, in the second riveting installment of The Wolf Chronicles the stakes are higher than ever. Young Kaala of the Swift River pack shattered the rules of the valley and exposed the lies hidden beneath them. Now, responsibility for the consequences rests with her. Along with her young packmates and the humans they have befriended, she must find a way for the wolves and humans of the Wide Valley to live in harmony. If they succeed, Kaala will finally prove herself worthy of her pack. But if she fails, the Greatwolves who rule wolf-kind will kill every wolf and human in the valley.
Told from the wolf's point-of-view and set 14,000 years ago in a time when the cultures of wolves and humans were not so different, Secrets of the Wolves transports us to a world where instincts are our only compass and cooperation between potential enemies could mean the difference between life and death.
I came across Dorothy Hearst's Secrets of the Wolves without having read the previous book in the trilogy, and found a lot to like in this engaging tale that fictionalizes that elusive period in prehistory where the domestication of dogs began.
Hearst tells this story from a wolf's point of view, which is just wonderful. She postulates an active effort on the part of wolves to become 'friends' of humans, while weaving a larger web of conflicting interests, both human and wolfish, around this central struggle.
The action centers on the adventures of Kaala, believed by some to be sent by the gods to lead the wolves in their effort to befriend humans. As a female wolf, Kaala brings a fresh flavor to the tried-and-true theme of a somewhat reluctant but evidently capable Chosen One. Her story is told in a more-or-less parallel fashion to that of her closest human friend, TaLi, a young krianan who like her grandmother has the gift of understanding the animals.
Hearst does an excellent job of capturing the mannerisms of real wolves in this novel. There were countless moments where the narrative inspired vivid images of wolf behavior and interactions. The hunting scenes were very exciting, and I would have liked to have seen more of them. I would have also liked more vivid attention given to the smells and sounds of the wolf world. But all in all, while reading the novel one has the sensation of running with the wolves, and this in itself makes it a worthwhile read.
Secrets of the Wolves was heading straight for a four star review right up until the last few chapters. I dropped it down to three stars for a really very personal reason: I'm not fond of trilogies where each installment is set up to leave you hanging at the end. I like to see novels be able to stand on their own in terms of resolution, even if they are part of a larger story. Secrets, while a great read, doesn't really reach a denoument. It simply cuts off in the middle of the action at page 371, leaving the reader waiting for book three.
I won this on Goodreads. This is the second book in The Wolf Chronicles, and it is told from Kaala's perspective, who happens to be a wolf. An attempt to bring wolves and humans together, living in harmony, has not worked out in the past, but Kaala finds herself in the position to try, along with the help of a select few wolves as well as Tlitoo, a raven who is more than he seems. But there is a problem. A Greatwolf named Milsindra is out to destroy any hope Kaala has of succeeding as well as vying for leadership of the Greatwolves, and she will do anything she can to get it. Will Kaala succeed in bringing the two together, or will she fail? The beginning was a little slow, but changes pace as events unfold. What I really liked about Hearst's writing is that you could really get the feel of the characters, being that they are wolves, with the way they greeted each other and how they interacted with other members. I have my own "wolf" (a siberian husky) and can see for myself how the actions of the characters are real. Very well done!
This book should have been called "Everyone's a jerk: Wolf edition" Because honestly, so many of the characters in this book are jerks. So this story picks up after the first one left off. The greatwolves give the wolves another chance to live with the humans after the events of the first book, but then, it turns out that they don't WANT them to succeed and try to sabotage them. Um...wait. what? The greatwolves seemed more of a kind of almost magical being in the first novel full of reverence and awe while in this book they come across as smug bully jerks. Which...kind of takes away from the first novel. Also the original pack that the main character is from basically gives up at the end and decides to side with the most evil of the greatwolves even though Kaala (main wolf) and her friends try to keep the promise of having the humans live with the wolves. Not only are the greatwolves and the regular wolves jerks, there's also HUMAN jerks as well who want to not work with the wolves and kill all the prey "oregon trail" style. Another problem i had with the book is that there's two love triangles. one with the human girl Tali and with Kaala. 2 guys want both of them. Honestly..i didn't need to read about a wolf love triangle. I could have gone on for the rest of my life without this happening. Kaala having two wolves wanting her despite being the most unliked wolf on the planet was odd enough, but now there was two humans wanting this unremarkable Tali girl who honestly.....i didn't care about. She was bland and irritating. At least in the first book she was tolerable. This time with a love triangle it was just....it wasn't good. The long and short of it, this was a very ugly, mean spirited sequel. I LOVED the first book as it had a great mixture of sad and happy moments while this one starts kinda sad, gets more sad, and then ends at a REALLY low point. Honestly, this one was kind of a schlog to ge through. The first book only took me 3 days. This one took me 13. All in all, yeah i complained a lot, but everyone was still in character and i AM invested enough to finish the series so i will read the last book because i DO want to see a happy ending. So that being said, i guess it couldn't have been THAT bad. And i finished it. If i really didn't like it, i probably wouldn't have. So all in all, a 2.5/5 rounded up to a 3. Here's hoping the last one is better.

Mini Review: A solid second novel. This one definitely improves on the first as far as the writing goes. The plot thickens and the characters have really grown since the beginning of the first book. Looking forward to seeing how this trilogy finishes out!
I always forget how good these books are, even after only putting them down for a week or two.
I get swept up in them so quickly.
Dorothy Hearst has done it again in the second novel of the wolves. Follow Kaala the wolf with a silver moon on her chest as she tries to unite the small wolves with the humans. Fight beside her as she battles great beasts including the great wolves themselves. Great secrets are soon uncovered, but what will Kaala do in order to keep her promise?
I love seeing the interactions between the wolves and the ravens best, it's great fun.
I would highly recommend this to anyone with a love of animals, especially wolves.
"Secret of the Wolves" by Dorothy Hearst is a story set about 14,000 years ago in the Wide Valley. After Kaala, a young female wolf of the Swift River pack, made a promise to the Greatwolves that the wolves of Swift River could live with the human Lan tribe for a year or every wolf in the Wide Valley would be killed. Milsindra one of the Greatwolves believed Kaala was attempting to destroy wolfkind so she attempts to make the humans and wolves go to war. There was also another threat. DavRian, a young human male, was the next leader for the Rian human tribe does not find wolves to be human's friends and also tries to prove to the Lan tribe that wolves are enemies. I think this was a really good story with all the challenges and struggles the Swift River pack has to go through.
Kaala had to face many encounters. Milsindra and her other Greatwolf followers who believed in Milsindra's plans for the better of wolfkind decided to try to make the humans and wolves fight for food by driving the prey outside of the Wide Valley to where normal wolves were not allowed to go. More encounters were DavRian and how he thought about the wolves. He and his tribe were skeptical of the wolves and thought of them as a threat.
My favorite character would have to be Kaala because she is the character who has to deal with the problems and is also risking her life to find out what the Greatwolves were hiding from them. Trevegg, the oldest member of the Swift River pack, is also another favorite character because he is always trying to help out Kaala by trying to get the humans to be with wolves and help her find out what the Greatwolves are hiding.s
I don't think you should read this book before reading the first book "Promise of the Wolves" because it may get confusing and don't understand what is happening exactly and why things are. I do recommend this book if you have read the first book in its series. I think animal lovers and nonfiction book lovers would like this story. This series have been recommended to me after I have read an entire six book series called "The Wolves of the Beyond" by Kathryn Lasky. Both books are similar because the main characters are wolves and are trying to survive what is happening to their homes.
School library journal said that the wolf chronicles are "captivating and believable" I have to disagree. Nothing about this was believable to me and I don't understand why the wolves are so drawn to the humans; most of them, or at least a good portion of them, want the the wolves enslaved or killed. And honesty, I was just hoping that the humans would just die off. Another thing I don't like about this series is that the wolves in here don't evan act like wolves, they act like humans. Maybe that's why they are so attracted to them. And just like the first one, not a lot happens until the very end. Okay, moving on to the characters. A vast amount of the characters lack personality and I find myself not really caring about anybody and almost rooting for the supposed villains. One of the reasons being is that I think Kaala, the main character, is annoying and unlikable. She constantly disobeys orders from her superiors but acts shocked when anybody else does the same. She can't control her temper, though that doesn't nessisarly make her a bad character, but a more real one. The author makes Kaala out to be a strong female character, and she is strong and independent, but she also doesn't kill when she has to, evan though it could save lives. And yes, I am talking about that ending. Evan though I found this series in the adult section of my local library I think that younger readers will enjoy it more.
Where to start? This books have too many problems.
First and foremost is the focus on politics. Too much centered on in that to be funny.
the second point is the romance subplots. it have two of them and both are bad; one of them is of dominance and the other unfinished because the boy have to go to his mission. And the girl is... I know where to start, the problem is in there is no end to that stupidity.
the third point is all the talking to go outside the valley and that goes to no nowhere. That was the solution to the subplots before mentioned and to the main character, Kaala "I need to go, but I can't go" ramblings that drags out the entire narration.
The third point is the Humanity fuck yeah vives that have. In an fucking animal tale. Sorry do not want.
the fist one was good, or maybe that was only nostalgia glasses.
Secrets of the Wolves is a great read for lovers of fantasy and paranormal stories. I read the first book in this series, but the author provides enough background in Book 2 (without being cumbersome) that you can jump on into the series.
The author did a wonderful job portraying the wolves "talking" in the story, but you don't lose the fact that they are wolves. Kaala is a wonderfully flawed character. She's not perfect, but it makes her more endearing. The action picks up in Book 2 and I can't wait to find out what happens next.
You really have to believe in the cause in order to enjoy this book. I was not convinced. I saw absolutely no evidence that wolves and humans were meant to be together besides the drug-like effects they have on each other. Save yourself some trouble, wolves, and let natural selection take care of the humans. Put your efforts towards becoming pack-mates with, gee I don't know, other packs. It's not like you accomplished an amazing hunting feat when you teamed up with another pack or anything like that. Let the Greatwolves drive themselves crazy trying to guard the humans.
The ancient story of wolves and humans continues, but with fewer implications on relationships, and basically concentrated on the adventures of Kaala and its friends. As consequence, the series loses something of its deep and interest, and the novel becomes less relevant. I reached the end of this book with some difficulties. Nestor
Wow. I forced myself to read the rest of this book today...and for such a disappointing, infuriating ending. I want to kill all those stupid humans. Right now. I'm gonna have to get my thoughts and anger together before I can review it. Just.....wow.
I did not care for The Secret of Wolves by Dorothy Hearst. There was too much dialogue between the wolves and to many wolf characters. I was hoping to learn more about wolves.
Book 2 of a trilogy. Set 14,000 years ago, Secret of the Wolves takes us back to a land where time is counted in phases of the moon, distance is measured in wolflengths, and direction by the scent of the nearest trail. Years of research into the world of wolves combines with mythical tale-telling to present a fantastical adventure set in a world filled with lore.
Kaala, the youngwolf (not a pup, but not an adult) who has upset the law of the Wide Valley by saving a young human, TaLi, has befriended her, and two of her foster siblings, Azzuen and Marra (pups that nursed with her from their mother once Kaala's mother, Reesa, was banished) have discovered young/teenage humans to befriend as well, as they follow Kaala one day. But they all must be careful for to break the rule of intermingling wolves and humans is a forbidden law laid down by the Great Wolves and to the break this rule could mean death for all human and wolf-kind.
I still give this book a 5 star altho, in the first book, "Promise", where in the Q & A at the end where the author points out how she had to figured out a different way to look at the world as a wolf might: time by moon phases, distance in wolf-lengths and direction by scent of nearest trail, she seemed to slip backward in this second book (or perhaps found it too difficult) and used a lot more "human" ways to look at the world. But still a must read if you've read the first book.
This book had the same alluring quality as the first in the series. It was a fast-paced, well thought out animal tale told of one of my favorite kinds of animal: wolves. This one, different from the first, had a bit of a love triangle emerge amongst the main character and two other male wolves, but it didn't hinder the story too much. The characters continued to develop, particularly Tlitoo and Torrel. And many more secrets were revealed in this novel, which I enjoyed. I was upset that so many beloved characters had to be killed off, but I hope that the final novel wraps up the series in a satisfying way.

This second book is more magical, as new powers and the spirit world are introduced, as well as new characters and relationship shifts.
There was always something happening (especially by the end), and it looked like poor Kaala was not left a second to breathe freely.
A lovely wolf fantasy story.
P.s: If you are unsure about getting the second and third book at once, do it! The end is, how to put it, quite abrupt. It feels more like a chapter end, rather than the end of a book, and you will need more :)
I really love this trilogy about the wolf clans, and Kaala, the little wolf that caries the promise for all wolfs with her.
In this part, Kaala tries to make an alley with the human clans, and becomes friends with the young girl that also needs to fullfill a promise. Both Kaala and the girl encounter reluctance from their clans, and they have to pay a price for it. But both try to forfill their prophecy, and try to make the right choices.
Wow! This series of books has been an awesome surprise find so far. There are twists and turns in every chapter, and it just keeps getting richer and fuller as the world Hearst has created gets more fleshed out. I almost don't want to start the final book in the trilogy, as I know it will take me from that world soon!
This book was hard for me to follow but once I started reading it , I now understand. The shows how humans and wolves are destined to live in peace. That we all share a responsibility to live in harmony with wolves. Some fantasy and mythical mixed with wolves in their pack, having to listen to the Greatwolves because they are wiser than the young wolves.
This was a great book. There was only one chapter when I was bored, but straight after that I COULD NOT PUT THE BOOK DOWN it was stunning and I loved it and the ending...! Wow! A must read!!! (Make sure you read the first book "Promise of the wolves")!
Some parts were more complex this time, some of the human politics bogged it down. I also despair of keeping track of all their names 😅 but still a race-along read.
