Beautifully illustrated book about the gestation of the hip-pocket frog. Specifically, from the time the male and female frogs take turns watching over the eggs and protecting them by eating insect predators, to the hatching of the tadpoles and their climbing into the 'hip-pockets' of the *male* frog, who keeps them damp and safe for thirty days, while finding food for himself and eluding predators in the Australian temperate rain forest, a task made harder by the 3rd year in a row of drought.

Pretty good book, interesting illustrations, although I would have liked to have some actual photographs to see the hip pocket frogs.

Would be a good read aloud to third grade through fifth. Information was fascinating. Resources were included at the end for further study.

This is based on a frog no bigger than the fingernail on a thumb. It shows the rainforest, mentioning how the rainforest is changing due to global warming, it shows the life cycle of the frogs.

I think kids will enjoy this.

This book has a lot of information about frogs from Australia's rainforest. The illustrations were enjoyable and there was so much information to learn about these frogs. It talked about their life cycle and about how small they are in size. However, with all the information this book has, I'd say it is for about a 3rd or 4th grade audience & up.
This book has beautiful pictures. It is about hip pocket frogs of Australia's rainforest. It discusses the life cycle of these frogs. It also talks about it various predetors. There is a glossary of animals, a few facts and places to go for more information. It mentions that these frogs are very small, but it never says how small they are.

A beautifully illustrated book about the life cycle of a hip pocket frog. Many interesting facts about these little creatures. I liked how the author describes the adult male frog as "young father", and his responsibility in caring for the tadpoles. I was amazed that he caries them in his hip pockets for 30 days. Entertaining and educational.

Great information and beautiful illustrations. It was fun to read about animals from Australia that I had never heard of before including the hip-pocket frogs.

A lovingly illustrated book, _Hip-Pocket Papa_ is a nice one to share. Revealing the life-cycle of a particular Australian frog, it is an invitation to wonder in the world where we live.
