Beth is not sure she is all that happy with her new class job, minding the plant. While others can queue up first in line or tend to the eggs, she is forced to water the plant, which does nothing. However, one day when Beth least expects it, the plant transforms before her eyes, leaving her pleased that she has been given this most important job. Neo liked the story, as he used it to help with his reading progress. He was able to sound out the words and piece the letter sounds together. A basic story had him able to use pictures and ideas to guess or predict what words would come next. A wonderful way to begin the reading process.

Great emerging readers book. It talks about Beth wanting everyone else' job except for her own. This is a good story about character, and it was very simply stated.

A young girl, Beth, is assigned the classroom job of watering the class plant. The other children get jobs she wishes she could do. Some of the jobs are holding the flag, and being first in line. One day when she goes to water her plant there is a beautiful flower on top. The entire class admires the flower and Beth decides her job was the best.

I liked that it was an easy to read story. I think even the younger children would understand it. The lesson of the story is that we don’t always get to do a task that we like but that we should make the most of it. You may even end up liking it!

I got this book from our library and reviewed it for http://thereadingtub.com/index.asp

This is a great book for beginning readers. It has simple, repetitive sentences and is about the jobs kids have in school, so it was a very familiar topic for our girls. Our oldest was able to read it without much assistance and after, we had a discussion about the different jobs that they have at school and their favorite and least favorite to do.

Very simple story with a lot of repetitive text. Beth does not like her job until something amazing happens. I liked how the language stayed simple and yet it did not drag to long. Not the most exciting read nor the most painful. Questions at the end. Ages 4+

This level 1 easy reader offers not only Michael Garland's illustrations but also a story line which pre-k/early elem can relate to...classroom setting and different job assignments. Beth doesn't like being the plant helper...until she sees the results of her efforts.
