Detailed entries, complemented by illustrations selected from comic books and incorporating original dialogue and textual narrative, furnish an exhaustive reference on the histories, adversaries, and adventures of popular heroes
Michael Lawrence Fleisher's comic-book writing career spanned two decades in which he authored approximately 700 stories for DC, Marvel, and other comics publishers. His work on series such as The Spectre and Jonah Hex is still highly regarded, as is his work on the Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes. After a widely reported libel case his comic output declined, with his last published comic assignment appearing in the UK anthology 2000AD in 1995.
Call me crazy, but I quite literally read this book cover to cover in preparation for a United States History presentation that I was doing on Superheroes, and it somehow didn't get incredibly boring. That is a testament as to how informative and enjoyable it was.
Tells a great deal about the history of this iconic character -- as well as plenty about her creator, writer and psychologist William Moulton Marston/Charles Moulton (pen name). Adore these references listing all of the old-time characters in these comics.
This is actually a thorough representation of the history of Wonder Woman. The reason I didn't like it is because I was so completely disapointed with the developemnt of Wonder Woman's story versus the superhero I percieve her to be. The sexism, continuous deconstruction of her powers by the authors and artist that have told her story is reflective of woman's empowerment in this country overall. Wonder Woman needs to be completely redeveloped.
Never having been a fan of Wonder Woman, I first got interested in reading her older stuff by finding this book (at the same time I found the Superman and Batman editions). Finding out about Etta Candy and the Amazons as well as a ton of other useful Wonder Woman information was eye-opening! Definitely a must read for all Pre-Crisis DC fans and for anyone who wants to see what kinds of friends and villains were involved with Wonder Woman!
