Macabre Madness #1

Cuervo's Carnival

Rate this book
Welcome to Cuervo’s Carnival.
Come for the thrills, leave if you dare.

Lola
I was born already dead. Heiress to a destiny I never chose. Plagued with a path that was never mine to take. If I had my way, I’d run down the path less traveled leading me to them. The rebels, the freaks, the Cuervo’s. My heart belongs to not one, but two. Their shadows are my refuge, their touch my kryptonite. If loving them is wrong, I have no interest in being right. My life started the day they saved me from my fate. There is nothing I want more than to live in the horror of their reality.

Paxton & Cillian
She is ours. Our queen of sorrows, our ticket into the fiery abyss. We were told to resist her. Told to ignore the desire she has poisoned us with. But we are fiends for her touch. There isn’t a part of her we haven’t explored, together. There isn’t a price we won’t pay to keep her where she belongs…with us. The days of her belonging to anyone else will be, nevermore.

Ravens warn and reapers kill…or do they?

Thank you to the author for sending me this highly anticipated ARC of her novella for a genuine review!

This book is MMF at its finest with mystery, paranormal activity, hauntings, and a healthy side of smut.

For such a short story, NJ takes us on a thrilling ride *pun intended* through the life of the three main characters: Lola, Cillian, and Paxton. They are damaged and tortured souls who find solace together and nothing will ever keep them apart, even though Lola’s father has other plans for her. The story starts off strong and you’re dropped right into the midst of the plot where everything unwinds at a decent pace. NJ is great at introducing mysterious elements into her story and you get entrenched immediately. The haunted carnival vibes were immaculate and she did an amazing job intertwining smut in a creepy surrounding. Fear is truly an aphrodisiac!!!

I’m not a ‘Poe Hoe,’ but I’m very familiar with The Raven and NJ didn’t disappoint with her loose retelling. She uses the themes of grief and takes us on a poetic journey that encapsulates the feeling of despair from losing someone close to you. Grief overwhelms Lola and we’re able to follow her through the steps of overcoming it. You can truly see her losing grip on reality as she learns to cope, but Cil and Pax are her alas, her wings, who keep her grounded. NJ showed that the power of love can truly bring you back to reality and how it can continue to be powerful even after death. Blood comes, blood goes, with family it doesn’t mean they will love you forever.

The many references to the poem were also a great touch! From Cillian and Paxton’s band named Midnight Dreary, then Nevermore, Lenore, and obviously, the raven, etc.

I can’t wait for the rest of their story! I’m starting a petition to get rid of Lola and make the next books an MM romance only!!! Just kidding…but not really.

I’ve been a fan of NJ since reading her debut novel, Skulls & Stitches. She will remain an auto-buy author forever!!!

Thank you @njweeks.books for having me on your ARC team for this beauty! And this cover is 😍

Novellas in my opinion are hard to nail and this was beautifully done and well-balanced. It's dark and gritty on the suspense side (and the SPICE, oh the spice), yet the author captured and showcased the raw emotion with her hauntingly unique poetic flow. There were also a lot of life lessons packed into the pages. The biggie is grief. Grief is a bitch, and I always appreciate any type of growth that comes from it.

I only wish that someday I can read more of Lola, Paxton & Cillian's stories! Especially more background info on the guy's side. I'll keep that glimmer of hope alive! Overall, i enjoyed it!

My spicy friends will enjoy this one and if you're a big Poe fan, it's a no-brainer. Add Cuervo's Carnival to your GoodReads and mark your calendars for release day!

Dear dear dear, what a book.

I would like to thank NJ for being nice enough to send me an ARC after I’ve harassed her for weeks telling her how excited I was to read it. I think she got the hint and took pity on me, but I’ll never thank her enough for this. I once told her that I would auto-read all her books after reading Skulls and Stitches, and Cuervo’s Carnival just reinforced what I said.

This is a short story, but so full that it actually took me two days to read it (that and I didn’t have much time to read too). So much happens in this book, you dive into the story straight from page 1, and it unravels itself slowly.
Be patient, you will not understand everything that is going on all at once, but you will have answers, that I swear.
This story is one of grief, of how love can help you overcome what could drown you, of how those you lost hold a power over you, but not one meant to hold you down, one meant to help you up.
Lola is one bad ass b*tch, and I don’t wanna mess with her. Paxton and Cillian are just incredibly supportive, loving, hot and praising kings. You will want to join this throuple, TRUST ME, even if you were not initially attracted to women, or to men, YOU WILL BE NOW.

I cannot recommend this book enough if you’re into dark romance, ghosts, mystery, MMF romance, paranormal stuff, praising (you know you are)… please don’t hesitate.
Will it scare you ? Probably. Will you get off on the fright ? Most definitely. Will you ask NJ to marry you afterwards ? No because I already did, so back off (jk, welcome to my life).

Definitely more of a 3.5 star🙂‍↕️ I really liked the characters and the plot (and the spice👀), but the story progressed a bit too slow for me😕 I’m also not a huge fan of Edgar Allen Poe, so the imagery and allusions to his texts very much went over my head😭 I do want to see more of Lola, Cil, and Pax bc there’s no way you can just end it like that and not have Donato get his comeuppance🙃

What a dark, creepy, delicious blast! This is everything I could ever want from a Raven retelling, and as a fellow Poe Hoe, all of the little nods to the poem and Poe’s work satisfied that itch perfectly.
N. J. has a gift for poetic writing, and her prose gives me chills sometimes with how beautifully she describes things.

I loved the relationship between Lola, Pax, and Cillian, and the steamy scenes were a fun break from the mystery and horror vibes. This truly is more than a smutty little novella, though. There are themes of found family vs blood, despair and finding new hope, the ties of generational curses and gifts, facing death without fear, unconditional love and acceptance, and reclaiming one’s power.

“Swift as a Cuervo, bleak as night, when you least expect it … she will end your life.”

Growing up, I loved Edgar Allan Poe, and his ever famous poem The Raven was my all time favorite. So when I heard Cuervo’s Carnival was inspired by that poem, I jumped at the chance to read it. NJ Weeks has this way of sucking you into her stories from the very beginning with her beautiful, poetic, and gothic writing style. I really enjoyed the creepy setting of the haunted carnival mixed with MC romantic suspense. Lola’s character had me intrigued; loving her spitfire attitude and strong-willed nature. I wanted to know more about Pax & Cillian’s background and lives, but what I did know about them, I enjoyed. And the spice was EXTRA SPICY 🥵. I wish I had more time with this throuple and their abandoned carnival, but the time that I did have with them in this novella, I enjoyed!

HUGE, HUGE thank you to NJ weeks for this e-arc. Check out Cuervo’s Carnival on its pub date 5/18!

What a ride! As a massive Edgar Allen Poe fan, when I heard about this book I knew I had to read it. And man did it not disappoint. As the author states, it is a very loose retelling of The Raven with some spicy dark romance. Check your triggers before reading and be prepared to be massively turned on by this MMF throuple and badass FMC. Lola, Pax, and Cillian are on the run and there's no better place to hideout than an abandoned, haunted carnival with a dark past. Lola has her own internal battles with her bloodline and finds solace in being tormented by Purgatorio, has her soon realizing, he is her best protection! I look forward to more from this author and am about to go grab her first book after this!

Blown away may be an understatement but WOW! I want to start by thanking NJ for providing the Cuervo’s Carnival ARC for an honest review!

For this to be novella length I was very impressed on the pacing and flow, it kicks off right away and keeps you intrigued as the story unravels. NJ’s writing brings two words to mind…poetic and entrancing! This story as an audiobook would be amazing! This is a loose reimagining of The Raven and it was beautifully done with the theme of grief being ON POINT!

Let’s talk about this throuple! Lola, Paxton and Cillian, they are a force to be reckoned with individually but together?! Don’t even try them! They move as one and will do anything to keep each other safe, their unity is admirable and HOT! This is my first MMF read and I didn’t know what ride I was going to hop but I will say that the experience did not disappoint. They are a sexy ass trio and their acceptance of each other just made them the perfect match, in love, grief, and darkness. I love them all but Cillian out of the three stole my heart & morality 👀😂🖤 The setting is an abandoned and haunted carnival that has a dark story and Lola finds herself being pulled by a force that only she seems to experience. I love a setting that is a main character itself, NJ does not disappoint with the spook factor. Bonus points if you can make the chills reach my bones and have Puerto Rican representation!

This was a fun, chilling, and steamy read and I cannot wait to see where the story takes this sexy throuple in the next book! I will be patiently waiting! I most definitely recommend this book, as always read the content warnings before reading!

NJ has been deemed an auto buy author for me, go check out her debut novel Skulls and Stitches if you haven’t!

I am intrigued by this dark, spicy and haunting book. NJ takes you to a world of  three lost main characters who seek unity and love with each other.
Elements out the Edgar Allen Poe poems are beautifully woven in this story. I never heard of the Raven but you don't have to know poems to enjoy this story.
The author is great at using the elements of mysteries and creepy carnival vibes. It is daunting and makes you question yours and the characters senity.
Through the grieving of Lola she discovered her bond with dead.
I love how the development of all three. Lola accepts her gift of initution and darkness within her. Cicilian gets more confident and Pax accepts his anxiety.

Check the triggers before this story. The spice and sexual tension between the three is really steamy and has horror vibes because of the abandoned carnival.

This is everything I need in a MMF! The spice is delicious! It was spooky! The playlist slaps! I didn’t see the twist coming!! The sense depravation and eerie feeling with the spooky aspect gave me goosebumps all over! I can’t wait for more of these characters! I loved all the symbolism and poetic aspects of the book too! NJ is just amazing as a human and as an author! Happy to be part of her ARC team!

Love me some spooky spicy vibes. She does an awesome job of world building for this novella, you definitely get all the mysterious creepy carnival eerie feelings.

Lola develops gifts of initiation & darkness when her grandma passes and causes some weird shit to go down at the abandoned carnival that her & Cillian/Pax (her lovers) are crashing.

My god the MMF scenes in this book are melt your panties off hot. I caught myself blushing multiple times and that rarely happens lol. I did find myself a little confused throughout the book, I know with novellas its hard to have a lot of detail but I felt like there was a lot of things happening in such a short book which left me craving more info.

Cuervos Carnival is a loosely based on the reimagining of the poem, The Raven, by Edgar Allen Poe. A dark, MMF romance. Cuervos Carnival was a haunting, suspenseful, but steamy ride. I was unsure of the way the story would go. It definitely kept me on the edge of my seat.

Lola a fearsome fmc. The daughter of the president of the Reapers motorcycle club. Gifted with a sixth sense, like all the women in her family, she doesn't understand the signs that she is receiving. But, everywhere she looks, the raven is there, staring, haunting, screeching, talking. Is it a bad omen? A foreshadowing of bad things to come?

In order to keep the two men that she loves, they need to get away from the clutches of her father & the biker club. Pax & Cillian chose to hide away with her at a haunted, abandoned amusement park. That's when things really amp up. I wish there was a little bit more character building for these two. However, the relationship between Lola and each of them was hot and for them necessary. Cillian, the dark, brooding one with a dark past and Pax, is the talkative one and free spirit. Their love for each other never wavers but the betrayal of people close to them, the warnings from beyond the grave, and the strange happenings going on in the amusement park keep you guessing. However, these 3 learn to live fearlessly with & for each other. There will be a continuation of book 1, but it did end satisfying.

Spicy Spicy!!

Cuervo's Carnival is a (very) loose retelling of Edgar Allan Poe's narrative poem, The Raven.

This is such a creative concept for a novel, and it definitely intrigued me!!

I absolutely love the poly relationship here! Lola, Cillian, and Paxton are the definition of a dream couple. They love each other equally, and would marry all three times if they could! Cuervo's Carnival Takes a look into their heavily spicy relationship🌶️, and it is AMAZING! A haunted carnival, a three way relationship, and the ability to see things out of reality. They all come together to create a hot, suspenseful, and absorbing read!
While the spice is the main content in the book, don't be fooled! There is in fact a plot. One involving Lola, her family, and her gifts.
I really enjoyed this, The cover definitely does this book right.
Thank you N.J. Weeks for providing me with a ARC copy of your novella, you've climbed to my favorite author list quickly ❤️

Welcome to Cuervo's Carnival. Come for the thrills...leave if you dare.

I was SO excited that I got an ARC for this novella because it has puertorrican folklore mixed in there, and it called to me 😍 Lola is such an interesting character: daughter of the guy running the mafia, but with a gift from her mom's side that will separate her from the rest. Paxton and Cillian are the only guys you would want by your side: they're both in a band, they're protective of the ones they care for, loyal to no one but Lola and each other, and pay attention to details. The spice was sending me to heaven and back 🥵 I need to see them taking over in the next book!

BLURB:

Inspired by The Raven. After reading this I had to reread the Raven.

I loved how Lola, Paxton and Cillian all took care of each other. They all know what will help calm, excite and what will drive them wild. I appreciate that N.J. talked about the different love languages that they characters have. And how the characters know this and help make them feel more loved because of it.

Cuervo's Carnvial gave off the best dark, spooky and carnival vibes this book was giving off. The spicy bits were steamyAF (fans self).

I loved the paranormal aspect of this book and how Lola's present is connected to the past.

I loved getting the whole backstory and the way that we received them (I don't want to give too much away). I am looking forward to the next full length novel.

This is my second book that I'm reading of N.J. weeks and I have to say that she deserves praise. Her writing is absolutely beautiful and poetic, the way she can describe things in such creative details that I can always see what is going on and paint a clear picture in my mind of the scene playing out. Literal chefs kiss.

The relationship between Lola, Cillian and Pax, the spice, the story of love and death pulled me in from the first chapter and I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. It's hard to form any thoughts because this book totally consumed me, this is everything I could ever want from a Raven retelling. What a story.

I was completely captivated throughout this thrilling page turner and I look forward to reading more from this talented author who has done a phenomenal job in weaving this storyline.

If you like dark themes, Poe and gothic vibes, give this novel a go. I can't wait for the rest of their story.

Heed A Raven's Warning

TW: Death, Grief, Violence, Depression and Anxiety.

Cuervo's Carnival is a dark romance that gives you chills, suspense and mystery. If you love dark, macabre poetry, this novella is a good place to start.

Lola is looking for a way to get from under the control of the Reapers. Being promised to another, Lola refuses to live her life by anyone's terms but her own.

Lola, Cillian and Pax have a deep love that is rooted in trust and understanding. Cillian and Pax need Lola more than they need air and is willing to do what it takes to be with her even if it means breaking away from the Reapers.

Fans of Edgar Allen Poe would appreciate this modern retelling of the Raven. The symbolism and eerie plot makes for a chillingly, romantic story.

✨Cuervo’s Carnival Review✨

I absolutely loved this book! It is one of my best reads this year!

The main characters are Lola, Cillian, and Paxton. I love their relationship together, they are a throuple. NJ wrote the love they have for each other so well that you instantly fall for each one. I could never choose.

This story takes place at The Night’s Plutonian, which use to be a gothic carnival. The aesthetic gave me chills with every detail that is described. Lola, Cil and Pax have the ride of their lives here. They are using the Plutonian to hide from The Reapers, a corrupt gang with the leader being Lola’s father. All they want is freedom to live as they please.
While in hiding Lola experiences the cuervo calling her. The veil is being lifted for her to see through the lies she has been told. But will it be in time? Can she escape death? The foreshadowing up to the final moments is so well written. My heart was racing throughout the entire book.

I don’t want to spoil this ride for anyone. All I can say is I felt like I had gone through the stages of grief with Lola and needed more. Even the acknowledgement was perfect! I felt seen in my own grief.

Now the spice in Cuervo is off the charts! The scenes they have together made me sweat, but at the same time it was beautiful. Lola knows how to manage both Cil and Pax together. She’s their good girl or is it bad girl? Lol Did I mention Cil and Pax are musicians… 🥵🥵

If you love The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe then this is a must read, since NJ took inspiration from it. If you love dark romance, spooky vibes, and all things Halloween then you will love Cuervo.

Quotes:
“But dreams are deceiving, because they are simply the lies that our hearts tell us to soften the blow of the wicked truths that always find a way to creep into our lives.”

“You’re going to have to do better than that, he hisses. “We want to hear you beg for it,”

“She unlocked parts of us that we always knew were there but suppressed. She opened our hearts to each other and to her. We are hers, and she is ours. Nothing can take her from us, not even the curse of the Reaper oath.”

A quick thank you to N.J. Weeks for letting me be a part of her ARC team. Although a free copy of the book was sent to me in exchange for my review, all thoughts and opinions are my own!

Right off the bat, N.J. gives us a little teaser of what’s to come in Cuervo’s Carnival. Just by reading the first paragraph of chapter 1, you can tell it’s going to be one hell of a spicy book. N.J. definitely didn’t come to play in regards to these scenes. The description of what’s going on, the way N.J. elaborates on how Lola feels when these scenes are happening as well as her innner monologue just makes it perfection.

I really loved Lola’s visceral reactions to the raven. N.J. just knows how to set the scene. She’s able to accurately convey what grief, sadness, and acceptance feels like. It was very comforting to me. I also loved how spooky and creepy the entire setting is. I mean if you think about an abandoned carnival, it’s already creepy enough. But then you add in the authors description of it all, and it makes you get a little bit of goosebumps. I found it very easily to picture the setting in my head.

Lola’s relationship with her grandmother is what I truly loved about this book. You can tell how much love there is between these 2 women. I love how her grandmother kept warning Lola in her own special way. With this being a short novella, I was pleasantly impressed at how well N.J. built their relationship.

I surprisingly didn’t see that little plot twist with Madame Eronel. I think it was the perfect twist to add to this novella.

What prevented me from giving it 5 stars was the lack of background between Lola, Cil and Pax. I’m just the type of reader who wants to know every single detail on how MC’s meet, why they fell for one another, just everything. In this book, we get a paragraph or two on this throuple’s background but that’s pretty much it. I really wish it had more. I feel like I would’ve been more sold on their love for one another if I had more info on the MC’s.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this novella. I really hope we are able to read more about Lola, Cil and Pax in the future.

"For we are the abandoned, and this is our hell…Welcome to Cuervo’s Carnival."

Cuervo’s Carnival is the first novel penned by author N.J. Weeks I’ve had the pleasure of reading, and after the feast I was just presented, it most certainly won’t be my last. I don’t know how she did it, but Weeks somehow takes a plethora of favorite themes and tropes and carefully weaves them together, submerging her readers in a world filled with mystery and betrayal.

Dark and sexy, this book is a quick read that packs a punch with a beautiful balance of thrills, chills, smoldering spice and heartbreaking revelations. The gothic tone the author achieves embodies the story that sparked this loose retelling, paying homage to one of the greatest storytellers of all time. Weeks sinks her claws in with an intelligent, poetic prose that refuses to let go even after the story has concluded. It’s stunning.

At the heart of this tale lies Lola, Paxton and Cillian, members of the Reapers MC and a throuple I know you’ll fall in love with. Fate and pain has brought them together, but duty is bound to tear them apart. Their story is one of found family, where veiled secrets gradually emerge from the shadows within the confines of an abandoned carnival. Readers are kept in the dark, but when the truth finally frees itself, it hits hard.

My only complaint is that I’m in dire need of more. The slow-building suspense throughout was quickly addressed towards the end, and I’m very much looking forward to the next step in Lola’s plan – I can’t say more! If you’re looking for a consuming story drenched in mystery with MC/Rockstar/Thriller vibes with some insanely hot MMF dynamics, then Cuervo’s Carnival may be just what you need. Loved it.

“She is our center, strong and able. We are her wings, broken and mighty, and together we can be stopped nevermore. For we are the abandoned, and this is our hell…Welcome to Cuervo’s Carnival.”

OMFG!!! What a dark, twisted, insanely erotic and utterly suspenseful story this was. It was creepy at times but definitely thrilling to read. That intense beginning had me completely captivated and needing to know what was going to happen next. There were emotional moments, funny moments, and a lot of smutty moments that all together kept me on the edge of my seat, gripping my kindle tightly and needing to take a cold shower when I was done.

Lola is one hell of a badass woman. And with her ‘mis alas’ (my wings) by her side, Cillian and Paxton, she is stronger, fiercer and the queen she is meant to be. Their bond is unbreakable, and they will do anything to protect each other. I loved their chemistry and every devious, depraved and sinfully delicious moment they had together. It was sizzling, explosive and had my body aching for more.

I loved the way that The Raven poem was woven into little bits of the story. The creative and creepy imagery and the outstanding world building brought this story to life on the pages. You could feel the eeriness of the story and at times it even gave me goosebumps.

It is a gritty and dark story with paranormal elements woven in-between and filled with action, suspense, mystery, violence, grief, despair, passion and love.

With the way this story ended, I can’t wait to see how much more vengeance and retribution the Cuervo’s are going to dish out.

“Swift as a Cuervo, bleak as night, when you least expect it … she will end your life.”

Storms have always soothed me; they are Mother Nature's way of reminding us that we aren't alone. Rain, like tears, may fall, but the storm they cause won't last forever."

This is marketed as for the Poe girls and is a "very loose retelling of The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe." So when I saw this, I knew I was going to read it. Long story short- it delivered on everything.

The spice is absolutely fantastic, it is why choose her brother's best friends. The story itself is twisty and turning and definitely delivers on the "creepy" vibe. I loved it so much. I am not really a "thriller" reader, however, if you are one you will love this too. It keeps you on your toes, wondering what is real and what isn't. The way the story wraps around you transports you to the abandoned carnival where the three of them find themselves in.

"For we are the abandoned, and this is our hell... Welcome to Cuervo's Carnival."

It is on the dark side of things so please check your TW. Your mental health is important.

I’ve always been a fan of Edgar Allen Poe, and when I saw that N.J was doing a retelling of The Raven, I knew I had to read it. NJ takes us on such a poetic journey following Lola and her grief and how she over comes it. We see Lola losing grip on reality. She is trying to cope with everything going on in her life. This story is heavy in grief, and what it can do to a person. Pax and Cil are her wings, they keep her grounded, loving her, and always reminding her what a true badass she is. The haunted carnival was stunning. I loved loved loved reading about that with the smut and haunting intertwining with the scary aspects was just chefs kiss! And the way NJ interjects aspects of Poe in the book….Pax and Cils band Midnight Dreary….and obviously the raven.

I’m living for Lola’s character. Her pain, her grief, her love for Cil and Pax; and their desire to live their lives how they want. I want to be the badass that she is, when I grow up!

Pax and Cil 🥵 Their relationship was something else. I want to know more of their back story.

I love it when, after I’m done with a book, the characters stay with me. I think about them days after reading them….and this book does that for me!

Incredible. I cannot describe this any other way. The depth in which NJ writes, Its mind blowing.. The ending was so far from what I expected.

Jumping straight in with the smut review. This is a MMF throuple and it delivered. *mops up drool*. The visuals from the spice 😮‍💨🥵 Boy, can this woman write spice. Its raw, indescribable pleasure. The details were 💦🤤 her broken wings, Pax & Cil, damn those boys were filthy. Im not religious but please god if I get another life can I be a cuervo woman and found by Pax and Cil. I promise to be good til then. (Mostly) 🙏🏼🧎🏼‍♂️I speak for every woman who has read or is going to read this - Thank You!! And ive never wanted to wear braids more in my life….

The details weren’t just in that though. The characters feelings & emotions throughout. Their surroundings, the abandoned carnival. Everything was insane. The overgrown weeds & cracks in the pavement, I walked along those in my mind. The darkness & chills - I had & felt those. It was poetic.

NJs love for everything spooky, dark and Poe themed makes her an exceptional writer in Dark Romance. I highly recommend this and anything she writes in the future. I would love to crawl inside her head, I bet its an actual wonderland.

Nicole, the way that you write is just so captivating and the way you have with words is just incredible! I cannot wait to read what else you have in that talented mind of yours!

Spicy, creepy, with a touch of supernatural... Loved the crazy, badass FMC with her amazing rockstar lovers!

The writing is smooth, sexy, and takes you by the hand through a creepy, haunted and abandoned carnival, where we find Lola, Pax and Cillian. Haunted by her abuela's passing, Lola starts hearing voices and having visions, which concerns Pax and Cillian. Though they momentarily distract her with some great spicy times, the past comes calling again, and the debt is blood.

I loved seeing the relationship between Lola, Pax and Cillian being pushed to its limits. The author writes some deliciously heated moments with the trio but is also able to seamlessly blend bits of horror and thriller into the story as well. The mood was gloriously dark, just like Edgar Allan Poe's writing, from which the author takes her inspiration for this story. Really enjoyed the vibe of it and how the story built to a climax (ha!). The writing is so vibrant, it pulls you in until you feel the bite of the chill, the darkness in the tunnels, and the fear. Well done and can't wait to see what comes next for this trio!
