Not sure what all the hoopla is about regarding Allende; if this novel is indicative of her work, I'm not at all interested. I had no investment in any of the characters (I should have known when I saw the book started with a family tree), the saga feeling was forced, the plot was lackluster, the pacing was strange, the structure was nonsensical, and the "drama" was tepid and dull. For a photographer's story, it was remarkably unphotogenic: nothing vivid, remarkable, or striking about the w

Honestly? Snooze fest. I found myself constantly in and out of attention because I would lose interest and daydream and then have to find the spot that I remembered actually reading to try and start again. I finally stopped at 95% because I honestly didn't give a fuck how it ended. I was just done and dropped it at the library without knowing the final dozen pages. I wish I was a person who liked Allende's works because EVERYONE DOES. I'm just not that person. I don't get the hype.

I couldn't get into this one. It started out confusing to me, and by the time I figured out who the characters actually were the plot didn't keep me gripped. Lots of family drama and confusing family tree lines and how they all affect Aurora, the main character and her life in San Francisco and her Chilean/Chinese heritage.

I had to read this book for a book club or else I would not have read it at all. Allende uses too many words and characters to tell a story. The story was filled with great lands and historical events but in the end this is nothing but a romance novel. She takes way too many pages explaining the sexual exploits of the characters, but doesn't take the time to give detail about actual important conversations. Such as (spoiler) that which Aurora has with her husband after she catches him cheating o ...more

I read this book for grade 11 English at school and I have to say I didn't really like it...

Maybe it's just me but I found the book really boring, as if I was reading a history book or something >.< There was not much plot in the book and it mostly talked about the happenings of Aurora's life. Don't get me wrong, there were a few interesting parts in the book but the number of them was very low. It seemed to me as if throughout the entire book, the author just described all the events of t

I was really looking forward to this book since I thoroughly enjoy Allende's shorter fiction. Sadly, I couldn't finish reading this one. I stopped half way through. There was entirely too much summary and not enough scene. Allende's decision to use primarily summary and "telling" rather than "showing" distances the reader to the point where it is incredibly difficult to care about what happens to the characters. The scene where Lynn dies could have been so powerful, yet it failed to provoke much ...more

Just started as the first book of the Grocery Store Book Club. Okay, I'm 170+ pages into this book. Maybe it is the translation but it is not well smithed. The story lags and will not pull me through the poor writing. I don't think I'm going to finish this one. I won't say it is the worst book I've ever written but it is definitely in the bottom 5.

Halfway through and don't think I'll finish it. The first half has told the stories of various members of the main character's family. Interesting in themselves, but they don't make up for a lack of overall plot.

I'm sorry to say that I did not finish this book. I ready about 60 pages and gave up. There was nothing to hold my interest and I felt like the story went all over the place. I very rarely stop reading a book but I just can't force myself to finish this one.

Reading for book club and couldn't even finish it. Couldn't get into it and the book jumps all over the place. Maybe when I'm old and gray and have tons of free time I'll pick it up and try it again.

I did not enjoy this book at all. The ending was completely unsatisfying, like the author got tired of writing out this story and just got up and walked away from the book with the tale untold.

Μακρυγορεί η συγγραφέας σε θέματα που δεν ενδιαφέρουν, δε καταφέρνεις να κάνεις δεσμό με τους ήρωες και ανιαρή πλοκή. Βαρετό.
