Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy)
These are the kind of books that 2nd and 3rd graders devour. Lots of silly word plays and humor that adults might roll their eyes at but kids simply eat up. In this installment, AJ and his friends are enrolled in the afterschool program and Mr. Tony is the leader/teacher of the group. In his effort to quite smoking, Mr. Tony is looking for ways to keep busy and possibly make it into the Guinness Book of World Records. Of course hilarity ensues. Gutman also uses some great word plays which teache ...more

Well, if you're going to take a glancing blow at addiction in a children's book.... I guess you could do worse?

I also wasn't a fan of the Six Moms subplot. Of course AJ in his crew think exclusively of themselves, but that gets translated into the moms not being allowed to have any identity outside of stay-at-home mom. I mean, really? ALL six moms are stay-at-home? None of them have any other business/job/volunteer duties that are just casually accepted as normal by the kids? Now THAT is weird.

I tought that this book was going to be about Mr. Tony eating a lot of baloney, but to my suprise it was not that at all. Mr.Tony was AJ's and his friends ASKK which stand for After-School Kids Kare teacher. Mr. Tony was always doing weird things like pogo-juggling and egg-jogging to keep himself busy so that he could stop smoking and try to get into The Guiuness Book of World Records. AJ and his friends didn't want to be in the ASKK program, until Mr. Tony showed them how to make pizza's which ...more

Recommends it for: children starting to read chapter books
This is the second book we've read in the My Weird School Daze series by Dan Gutman and Jim Paillot.

They are very funny, quick reads and although they are told from a boy's perspective, I think they would appeal equally to boys and girls. We are reading the books completely out of order, but it doesn't seem to matter.

The dialogue is fresh and the story is easy to read aloud. I do not like the instances where the word "dumbhead" is used, but I either change the word or mention how that it is a

The second and third graders at my school love these books. They like that they are funny and use words like "shut up" and "butt" as well as the exaggerated humor, some of which they don't always get. What I like about these books are the many idioms contained within each. It might be fun to make a class book about all the idioms and their meanings contained within each book...and you can also use this time, if you so choose, to address why using the words "shut up" and "butt" in school are frow ...more

Mr. Tony is the after school program director. He wanted to be in the Big Book of World Records. He tried to build the biggest pizza in the world but if they donated three thousand pounds of food Mr. Klutz would jump out of an airplane and land on the school. By accident he landed on the pizza so they couldn't be in the Big Book of World Records. But it was on the News.

Surprised I didn't love this one like I have all the rest of this series. Felt like it was rushed. Usually I really like the quirky main character, but Mr. Tony just was not interesting. Dan Gutman slow down! Quality not quantity.

its about Mr.tony wants to break a Guinness Book of World Records by making the largest pizza but when their done and the lady from the book in charge of measuring is there Mr.Klutz in a ape suit ruins the pizza.so Mr.Tony couldn't be famous.
