I found this book at a guest ranch in Montana, desperate for anything to read, and I was very pleasantly surprised. Even though it was written many years ago, and is set in an even older time, it was still an exciting read. I really enjoyed following the hero from his upbringing as a bastard (everyone knew but nobody talked about it) to becoming a respected officer in the British Army, to betrayal, capture and slavery, and finally revenge. It was a very satisfying and enjoyable book.

The first half of this book proves that men can go overboard writing romance too. In the second half, the hero narrator often reminds me of a more cynical Flashman.
