Basic Roleplaying Quick-Start Edition

Rate this book
Welcome to Chaosium s Basic Roleplaying Quick-Start Edition, a booklet that collects the essential rules for BRP and presents them in abbreviated form. This book comprises a basic roleplaying game system, a framework of rules aimed at allowing players to enact a sort of improvisational radio theater only without microphones and with dice determining whether the characters succeed or fail at what they attempt to do. In roleplaying games, one player takes on the role of the gamemaster (GM), while the other player(s) assume the roles of player characters (PCs) in the game. The gamemaster also acts out the roles of characters who aren t being guided by these are called non-player characters (NPCs). From its origin, Basic Roleplaying was designed to be intuitive and easy to play. Character attributes follow a 3D6 curve, and the other Basic Roleplaying mechanics are even simpler. Virtually all rolls determining success or failure of a task are determined via the roll of percentile dice. This means that there s less fiddling with dice of different types, and the concept of a percentile chance of success is extremely easy for beginners and experienced players to grasp. Use this booklet to introduce new players to BRP, or hand it out to your established group for quick and dirty character creation.

Basic Roleplaying is one of the best danged tabletop RPGs out there. This is a very introductory version of it, put into bite-sized bits for easy understanding. The game isn't super hard to understand, so it doesn't need to water stuff down too much. There are a lot of extra things that are referenced that instruct you to see the full rulebook, but most of them are expansions on the idea. What you have in this book, frankly, is enough. BRP is a fairly generic rule set. Not to say it's good for every type of game, but you can use it for nearly any genre. Science Fiction, Western, Martial Arts, GrimDark Fantasy. You name it, you can do it in here. It was my go-to system for many, many years of gaming, and is still the system I frequently use (especially as Call of Cthulhu) to teach new folks about the hobby.
I believe this is still a free download on Chaosium's site, and I highly recommend it.
I'd really love to see Chaosium do a variation of this for Free RPG Day.

It’s pretty good for learning the basics for someone just getting into it. I found it useful for freshen up knowledge that I may have forgotten.
