Rate this book
Guitar Basics is a landmark method for young guitarists. It starts at absolute beginner level and progresses to beginner level. The method is set out in fifteen stages and contains original pieces and traditional tunes in an array of styles including classical, folk and world music as well as well-known favorite film and TV themes such as James Bond, Batman and The Flintstones.

There is a thorough introduction to standard notation, with sections on chords and TAB, whilst ensemble pieces are ideal for group teaching.
The enhanced CD provides accompaniment parts, teachers' notes and tips for parents which are easily downloaded, or it can be simply used to play the fun backing tracks!

As a piano teacher with rudimentary guitar skills, this book has been excellent for starting to teach guitar without any experience teaching that particular instrument. I never did piano grades but have taught 15 children how to play piano so had the experience and thought “how hard can it be?” This book has made it easy!
My own skills have increased as I learnt the notes on the guitar and I can now read treble clef for guitar. I’m not fast but I can tell when there are mistakes so it is an achievable skill. Obviously my background in piano has been a great help!
The Guitar Basics Teachers’ Book (which isn’t on Goodreads to review) is practically the backing track notation so was a bit beyond me but is worth acquiring as there are great tips on posture, and how backing tracks and certain pieces in the student book can be used to grow a students’ skill in improvisation, listening, timing. The authors show great respect for students’ abilities to make their own musical judgments which I found encouraging and evidence of excellent and sensitive formulation of this method.
All in all, an excellent series, and “landmark method” is not an overstatement.
