Goddesses

Since time immemorial, artists have created impassioned images of the goddess as the ultimate generator and destroyer of life, as fertility figure, and as ruler of love and war. Encompassing a variety of media — sculpture, painting, photography, performance art, and film — Goddesses also provides an enlightening text exploring all her many guises.

This a slim art book with a cursory overview of goddesses in general, but the photos are amazing. Some I had seen many times before but not so close up and detailed, while others were completely new to me. The author also included many African and Oceaniac cultures as well as more modern art works, which made for a wonderful contrast and continuation of goddess art. I had bought this book at Amazon Marketplace for a penny from a Goodwill, and I'm satisfied with my purchase.

If anyone would be interested in reading more about Godddesses in general, may I suggest the following books for a start: Merlin Stone - Ancient Mirrors of Womanhood; Patricia Monaghan - The New Book of Goddesses and Heroines; Hallie Iglehart Austen - The Heart of the Goddess. Martha Ann & Dorothy Myers Imel's book, Goddesses in World Mythology: A Biographical Dictionary, is a mammoth listing of goddesses with their attributes, region, people, etc.

Whether you are interested in alternate religions or art in general, this is a nice book to have and peruse.

Some enlightening concepts around the importance of the divine feminine in human society. The most powerful of these is that wisdom equals love.
