I received this book as an ARC.

This book reminded me of the Immortals After Dark series, the Midnight Breed series, and the Demonica series. Not the actual storyline, of course. What I mean is that it has the same feel as those other series. The world is set up and easy to understand, but the focus is definitely not on the world building. Most of the focus, and the factor that makes the book shine, is the character relationships and interactions. There's a lot of humor and even some sexiness in this book. I think if you're a fan of any of the series that I mentioned above you might want to take a second look at this series.

One of the things I liked about this book was the fact that I was able to come into the series cold and not be too lost. This is apparently book six in The Primal Instinct series. Since it's so far into the series I wouldn't have been surprised if I had been completely lost. Luckily I was okay. I knew I was missing back story and references, but it wasn't an overwhelming feeling. I never felt like I was missing anything that was important to this story.

Kellan was such an interesting character. At first he seemed pretty lighthearted and a bit of a player. While that was true in the past, Kellan was determined to turn over a new leaf. When the details were revealed about why he was so determined to change, I still didn't absorb his absolute devastation about it. It wasn't until later in the story that I understand exactly how everyone's low opinion of him had seeped so far into his soul that he actually believed it. He no longer fought against his own fate. While he was willing to fight to save someone else, he didn't give himself the same consideration. I think in some subconscious way he felt he deserved to be punished for that action, whether that meant unhappiness, pain, or even death. It made his personality quite interesting.

Chloe was pretty interesting too. I wish I understood the Mallory and Merrick side of her nature a little better. What a harsh existence being a Mallory was. The absolute loneliness that they all must have experienced is horrible to even contemplate. I loved Chloe's personality. She always seemed so logical and willing to bite the bullet and have conversations about uncomfortable subjects. She was afraid the curse was affecting Kellan, but after awhile she said screw it and decided to roll with it instead of agonizing over it. I also liked that she took action and decided to test her theory. It was really refreshing.

There was a lot of humor and even some tenderness in this book. There were a lot of great lines that I would have loved to quote. In the beginning the sex and tension seemed like it would be really hot. Especially because Kellan kept fearing to let his wolf control during sex. I felt a little let down by the heat factor. I think a lot of people will still find it really sexy, but I was a bit disappointed.

I saw the potential for a few future stories, but nothing felt like blatant sequel bait. They all actually contributed to this story so I didn't mind them being there. I did feel quite angry at Kellan's brother, but I'm sure I'll be more understanding once I go back and read his story. I felt the way things resolved themselves at the end was pretty convenient, but honestly, that's not unique to this book. While I was disappointed, it didn't ruin my enjoyment of the book.

I think I'm going to have to check out the rest of this series to see if it is just as good.

I am still on fire after reading this book, it's definately a panty dropper...lol ;)It really was that freakin hot...I loved it!!!!...Chloe and Kellan rock....He was just sexy as hell, the way that the author described everything about him throughout the duration of the book (shudder)...And Chloe didn't get on my nerves and for me that's a huge feat for me because the female heroines in these paranormal romance books usually pluck my last nerve...I was cool with both of them....And the sex scenes are off of the charts...I am glad that she brought Kierland's brother's story out and I can not wait to read Seth's next:)

This book centers around bad boy Kellan the were shape shifter who is just sexy as hell...But, always was a bit hot around the collar and has had more than his fair share of women...But, there was always something about Chloe Harcourt the half Mallary and half Merrick witch who set his soul on fire...ever since he saw a picture of her he knew he had to have her...The book opens with him being held captive in a compound in the wastelands with one mission to save the witch and protect her...But, little did he know what was going to transpire once he actually laid eyes on the real thing....And that's all I'm going to say. don't want to tell the whole story for those who haven't read it yet...While this is a book in a series Ms. Byrd still provides a detailed glossary about all of the different characters in her world so having said that one wouldn't be too lost is this were the first book they read by her, but, it probably would be best to read the whole series...I plane to go back and read all of the ones I haven't read yet...She just keeps gettign better and better...I am not a fast reader at all and I read this book in 6 hrs. yesterday...I couldn't put it down, and refused to wait until the next day to finish it, I had to finish it in one sitting....love, love, loved it....

If you want hat and steamy and sexy as hell with all of the paranormal elements of witches, vamps, werewolves, shapeshifter, and more; I'm sure that you will devour this series just as I have so far ;)

Best book in the series so far. Kellan was a favorite of mine, and you could see his progression as a devil-may-care fighter, to a caring warrior. And Chloe was a great counterpart, strong and a fighter in her own right. To suffer what she did at the compound, and to still put her faith in him, says much about his pull. Despite herself, she still falls for him. It was adorable that she couldn't believe that Kellan would love her without the curse. I liked the many secondary characters; their continuing stories, as well as the clear soon-to-be stories, add so much depth to their relationship. Seeing how his friends view him, and Chloe's fierce protection of him, made him fall for her all the more. While the plot is continued from previous stories in the series, you could still pick this up as a stand-alone and enjoy it. I can't wait for the next in the series!

3.75 Stars Paranormal/Urban-Fantasy

The Primal Instinct series by Rhyannon Byrd is one of the two paranormal/urban-fantasy series that I indulge in. I didn't start out with this series from the 1st book itself, but rather took the plunge with book 4 in the series Touch of Seduction which hooked me onto the series and its fabulous set of characters who all seem to be finding their happily ever afters in the midst of a war that continues to wreak havoc on their society of preternatural beings who coexist with the human race who are mostly unaware of their existence. It is difficult to write a review for this series without including some amount of spoilers in the review, so consider yourself fairly warned before proceeding.

Touch of Temptation is the story of the ultra-bad boy Kellan Scott who sums up his character in four words - watchman, werewolf & world-class fuckup. 27 year old Kellan is a member of the Watchmen, a highly skilled organization of shape-shifters whose job it is to keep watch over the clansmen and women. Kellan is not proud of the playboy lifestyle he has led till now, the way he has pursued meaningless sex unlike anyone else in his group, something which had landed him in hot water when he had unknowingly slept with the enemy and nearly destroyed the life of an innocent woman in the process which had finally served up as the wake up call he had needed. Being the younger brother of Kierland, the leader of the Watchmen who is one of the most righteous badasses around, Kellan is doubly critical of himself, wanting to make amends, turn his life around so that he could turn into someone that others can rely on in times of need and necessity. So to make amends and to start off the new year with a bang, Kellan sets off to rescue the youngest Harcourt witch who has been imprisoned by the psychopath known as Ross Westmore.

It has been several months since 24 year old Chloe Harcourt was captured by Westmore who is more than responsible for bringing in the Casus, one of the most violent of the ancient clans who for the past 1000 years have been rotting away after being imprisoned for their crimes against humanity and another rival clan. A half Merrick and half Mallory witch, Chloe possesses an unusual power that tends to heighten the emotions of those she is around to extreme levels. For this reason, Chloe tends to shy away from companionship and men, preferring her lonesome existence rather than subject anyone to her powers and submit them to her will of wanting to abate her lonely existence. Westmore's aim in keeping her is a simple one, present Chloe to Anthony Calder, the Casus leader who would rape, kill and feed from her in her full Merrick form in order to receive the power charge that would propel him from his holding grounds onto Earth.

Kellan's fascination for Chloe is an unexplainable one. Right from the very first moment that Kellan had laid eyes on Chloe's picture, it is as if the primal wolf deep within him wants to stake its claim on the witch with the perfectly smooth pale skin, sleek dark hair and fey face. Making his way across the Wasteland, a mystical region created by powerful magic which is a cold dangerous place where family units of vampires are exiled after judgement has been passed against them, Kellan is infected with a poison that is bound to kill him slowly within a couple of weeks. It is Kellan's plan to find the witch, protect the witch and save the witch. Lusting after the witch and wanting Chloe to belong to him for now and forever never figured into his plans though that is exactly what the animal inside of him wants and hungers for.

Chloe, not one to trust anyone to be able to resist the lure of her powers is wary at best when she encounters the sinfully handsome and virile Kellan. With his rugged features and over six foot tall, one who has a tendency to look more than a little dangerous; Chloe can't help the hunger that spikes through her which has the Merrick inside of her clamoring to possess and be possessed by the man who has literally traveled through hell to come to her rescue. Though Chloe believes that no one can really want her for herself, she can't help but want Kellan in his most primal form before the day is through.

With danger from all sorts of creatures and enemies that seem to come forth in abundance, Kellan knows he would die fighting for to protect Chloe till his last breathe, something which is most likely to happen on its own before their journey through the Wasteland is through. Characters from previous stories make their forays into this one, making this a well rounded story with enough kick-ass action to keep the pages turning.

With stories by Rhyannon Byrd, you can always be assured that she would deliver in spades in the sensuality department with scorching hot scenes that can make you hold in your breathe for a minute or two. Likewise, Kellan sets the pages afire with the burning need that rages inferno inside of him whenever Chloe is by his side. And with Chloe's need to feed all types of hungers that keep weakening her abilities, Kellan's noble instincts of keeping his unworthy hands off of her seems to fly out the window. Though I skipped a couple of the explicit sex scenes towards the end, I still liked the intensity of the connection between Kellan and Chloe which in the end is what saves them all from being annihilated by a mutual enemy.

Though this is not my favorite in the Primal Instinct series, I still enjoyed the adventure, the romance and some of the explicitly drawn out scenes of love and possession between Chloe and Kellan. For those who are fans of the series, the continuous explanation of the creatures and the very well done paranormal world in the series, it can be slightly exhausting reading through all the details. But it does lend the story the ability to be picked up and read as a standalone because you really won't be missing out much by not starting from the very 1st book in the series.

I am very much interested now in reading book 7 of which I have an ARC which features the psychic vampire Raine who was captured, raped and tortured by Westmore and Seth the human soldier who used to be a vampire hunting soldier until the war that is about to emerge in full throttle had made Seth turn around and double check whether he was fighting on the right side all along. If done well, Rush of Darkness can prove to be a very good read which I can hopefully start right after I get back home from work today.

I end my review with one of most explosive scenes in the story where Chloe's unwavering hunger for Kellan has Kellan's noble intentions flying right of their jail cell. YOWZA!

I didn’t expect this book to be paranormal I thought it was just going to be an erotic based romance but it was great. The couples love they had for each other was so strong.

Good read

Deliciously evil and yet captivating paranormal romance. Kell and chloe are the main coup,e but the story of good versus evil continues. Liked it but not as much as his brothers story. Looking forward to Raines story.

This was the book I was desperate to read! Touch of Temptation was everything I wanted it to be and much, much more. It was great. I was so glad I read the previous two books because otherwise I really would have been confused and wouldn’t have known what was going on. Kellan ends up falling for Chloe from a picture Olivia shows him right back in book 4, Touch of Seduction, then Kellan has this mad plan to get Chloe free by getting himself captured in Touch of Surrender and only Morgan can find him, so the rest of the group (the other Watchmen) follow and make camp determined to get Kellan out if he hasn’t freed himself and Chloe by a agreed upon time. I loved the first half of Touch of Temptation where Kellan, Chloe and Raine are locked up in separate cells and Kellan is getting to know both women. I instantly liked all three of the characters and was rooting for all of them from the first page. I especially liked the storyline between Raine and Seth (a human Watchman) but alas this is not their story and their story is the next book, Rush of Darkness out at the end of March.
Chloe and Kellan’s story didn’t hog the whole book like the main characters did in the two previous books but their relationship was still the centre which I immensely enjoyed. I really liked Chloe, but she annoyed me with the disbelief that Kellan had true feelings for her that had nothing to do with the Mallery witch part of her that was waking up. And felt sorry for Kellan when Chloe kept trying it out on other Watchmen to see if that’s why Kellan was interested in her. However, I managed to get over that and the second half of the book which I also loved was about their escape from the wastelands where Chloe, Raine and Kellan were being kept and I just thoroughly loved this book. I really enjoyed the banter/tension between Ashe and Juliana and wonder if they will be each other’s HEA in Ms Byrd’s spin off series (or maybe wishful thinking on my behalf).

Overall, I like this series and cannot wait to get my hands on Rush of Darkness to continue the series and enjoy more from these characters.

Here we have the 6th installation of the Primal Instincts Series.

This book is Kellan and Chloe's story.

Two books ago, Kellan saw Chloe's picture while helping Aiden keep Olivia and Jamie safe. Chloe had been kidnapped by the Kraven and since that day Kellan has been driven to rescue her.

Chloe is not only a merrick, but a Mallory Witch, and the curse that has plagued her bloodline for centuries has made her reluctant to accept any type of emotional proclamations.

**

The premise of this story is good, an unknowingly-selfless hero, a shy emotionally tormented heroine that needs rescuing, emotional struggles, physical struggles, supernatural creepies getting in their way to safety.

The story starts out kind of slow. The setting is pretty much 50/50 in captivity, trying to make it out of the wasteland.

Kellan is my second favorite hero, surpassed only by Aiden. Kellan has recently had a life epiphany - he's been screwing around and making unwise and unsafe decisions. Most notably, being lured into the bed of a woman who Kellan was unaware of her being a Casus. That almost cost him his life and the life of Riley's woman, Hope.

Chloe is the type of heroine that is always over analyzing everything. She is adamant for a good portion of the story that Kellan doesn't really want her, it is just the curse forcing him.

Overall, I enjoyed the story, and I can't wait to read the next one.

In the paranormal battle of good vs. evil, Kellan, a Lycan shape-shifter, is on the good side, but hasn’t always made the right decisions. In fact within their warrior group, he is known as a womanizer and he is beginning to feel like a real screw up.

Then Kellan, gets one look at the picture of the missing witch, Chloe and he suddenly feels drawn to change his life. He can’t get her out of his mind, so he sets himself up to be captured and taken to where she is.

I love, adore, and worship this series. The battle between the Watchman and the evil species that lurk in this world the author created is so dark and complex and utterly captivating. Then running side by side with all the action and evil you have the romance. This series is dominated by primal, delicious males and their sexy and feisty females; you want to eat them with a spoon.

This series has quickly become one of my favorites and it’s one of those storylines that you count down to the next release date. Rhyannon Byrd has created characters that leap off the page and a storyline that has you begging for more! This book was probably one of my favorites in the series and I am so anxious for the next one I fear I may not make the wait.

My verdict: 3.5 stars.

Hmm, I think I might have sabotaged myself reading this out of order. I'd recently read Deadly Is the Kiss and awarded it 5 stars. When I saw this was available from the public library, I snatched it up even though it broke my cardinal rule...never read a series out of order. Ah well, I already knew from reading the Grangers #1 that there was a HUGE back story, a bunch of dynasties/families/clans and a ton of cross-over characters (think Nalini Singh's Psy-changling Series).

I will have to go back and read this series from the start then review this book again. Maybe I missed he nuance of some of this novel because I don't know all the characters mentioned.

My biggest gripe is that the alpha hero has a HUGE TSTL vibe going on, and though I realize that this was part of his fatal flaw, I just couldn't like him very much.

Sorry if you are die-hard fan, I will totally re-read in ORDER!

I really love this series , the characters are awesome and the plot is good , at times some of the things in the book get a little redundant but I still love all the books.

I've been waiting for Kellen's book for a while now and I was so happy to finally get to read it , I love his story , the fact that he risks his life to find & rescue Chloe was so great , completely different from how some of the other books start out , I really liked the little banter between Kellen & Chloe , they are actually kinda perfect for each other, I thought it was nice to see that Kellen has grown up since the beginning of the series .

I liked Chloe from the start of the book , she was funny & it was awesome how much chemistry her and Kellen have , it was definitely a steamy book, I did however think they could have made her powers cooler , thats one of the things that bothered me the most , I mean she's a Witch but all she can do is make wind and light up , it was just a bit disappointing .

overall loved the book , I wish they had showed more at the end but for the most part I enjoyed this book .

I love a book that has the hero and heroine think they aren't good enough for the other, and boy does this book have this in spades. Kellen is the screw up in his group of friends, while Chloe is fighting her Mallory/Merrick heritage. You can't help but to fall for Kellen right along with Chloe as he fights his own nature to do what would be better for her rather than do what he wanted. Chloe wasn't able to help him much as her Merrick was coming to the forefront causing her to say outrageous things she would never normally say.

It was great to see a lot of the past characters come together in the Wasteland for the big battle. The friendship within the Watchmen group and their allies made for some great lighthearted scenes.

The friendship that Kellen and Chloe cultivate with Raine was fun. I have a feeling that she along with other characters we meet in the Wasteland will have a big impact on the future books, one which I can't wait to see what it is.

I love this series, I just wish Byrd wrote faster. Kellen's story starts in the previous book (Keirland and Morgan's). He has set off across the wasteland to rescue Chloe from Westmore, crossing paths with a nest of vampires who he gets caught up in a fight with, that leaves him poisoned. Racing against the poison and the clock to free Chloe, Kellen struggles to get Chloe free before the Casus catches up with them. Kellen is trying to redeem himself by rescuing Chloe, but it is Chloe who rescues Kellen (from himself). Their story is cute, at times is bogged down by the dialogue, but overall a good story. The passion and intimacy is scorching with these two, and would give any woman some heated fantasies! The series is moving along a little further in the fight against the Casus, and we meet a few new characters in this one. If you haven't read this series, start at the beginning, you will need to know the path to understand all the dynamics. But you won't be disappointed.

There is just something about a male who feels unworthy of love that just makes me all gushy. LOL

I was afraid that Kellan's self loathing would get on my nerves, but thankfully it didn't. As a playboy/werewolf shifter/and screw up, he continually feels that he's not deserving of the kind of love that his friends and brother have found. Chloe, a Mallory witch/merrick, instantly feels that her curse is what's making Kellan attracted to her.

This book had a lot of recaps in it (which I appreciated). The intimate scenes were very hot....and at one point Kellan slows down and talks to Chloe in such a romantic way that I really, realy felt bad about his situation. All hell breaks out in the last 50 pages and I was pleased with how it ended, with the exception of Jamison.

I can't wait for Seth's book and the spin off regarding the vamps!

I would have liked to give this one more stars but I just had a harder time getting into it than the previous books. I think it is probably due to the length of time that has lapsed since I read the last novel. So I came into this one like a newbie. I needed the background information and character development, which seemed rather slow. I was also very annoyed with Chloe. She spent 905% of the book thinking that Kellan only wanted her because of a curse and was so low on self esteem that I wanted to slap her. Kellan on the other hand used the same amount of book to keep secrets which was also annoying. I did eventually get sucked in but by then it was over 50% through. So now that I am refreshed I am going to keep going and finish out the series. I suspect I will enjoy it more now.

I have a hard time saying whether are not this was not the best book in this series or not. Not sure, but it does rate far up there! I loved Chloe and Kellan as a couple. Kellan is that bad boy we all want to meet and reform. And, Chloe is that good girl who has a bad girl just waiting inside for the right man.
Kellan Scott is a Lycan watchman from the other five books in this series who has been a very bad boy. Now he decides he will rescue Chloe from a very sadistic captor to make up for all the playboy screwed past he has. So he gives himself up as a prisoner to get close to her so he can rescue her. And he just may die trying.
Chloe has unusual powers and when she finds out that Kellan is there to rescue her. She is frightened that he is moved by her because of a curse.

Acomplicated story that is a continuation of situations and circumstances begun in the previous five books. Kellon Scott was introduced in book one but only now comes into his own. He has finally matured and is determined to rescue Chloe Harcourt, a young beautiful witch who has been taken prisoner by a sadistic warmonger bent on power grabbing and needs her unique abilities. A really great love story at the core but lots of suspense and action swirling and fomenting around the main characters. Ryannon Byrd is an experienced writer and once again demonstrates that she can put together one heck of a story.

What the heck?! My reaction wasn't "That makes sense," but "What the...!" And RB had a thing for telling us about what people said in narrative form, instead of letting them speak for themselves in dialogue. What kind of writing is that? Maybe she was rushed.

Oh well, I'm overlooking those things for some reason and giving it 4*s anyway. You can't beat RB for the hero's romantic declaration of love in the HEA. She throws in everything but the kitchen sink!

Note: This book is a scorcher!

I don't Know, I can't enter in this serie. Maybe it's me, maybe it's the translation (lack of humor everywhere), maybe it's the story (too much enemies) or the characters. All the times, I have a lot of expectation (good summary, good cover, good presentation of the main characters in the previous books...) but at the last I'm disappointed. I have finished it but so little remains in me, that I can't really tell it's my favourite type of paranormal romance. Sigh.

I LOVED this book!

Kellan is … amazing, and I loved how hard he tried to save Chloe, and how consuming his feelings for her was. Chloe was just perfect for Kellan and I loved them as a couple.

The storyline was wonderful and I loved how Kellan fought so hard to save the day and show everyone just how wrong they were about him. The romance intense and VERY hot.

A must read for all PNR lovers.

Such a phenomenal story! Beautiful, devastating, powerful, emotional, self sacrificing, heart wrenching, empowering, and erotic are just a few descriptions I give to this book! The BEST so far! With each new book in this series the stories and character connections get better and better. Each one more powerful than the next. I don't know how the last 3 will be able to compete with this one!

The ongoing storyline is good, as well as the individual storyline. But the "I'm not good enough to be with you" thing is a little repetitive in this series. Not enough to take away from the quality of the book, just enough to make you wanna punch the main character and tell him to stop being a dumbass.

This is another great addition to this series. I liked as much as I have liked the first part of the series. The characters never disappoint me and they keep coming back in each book. Thanks to that this is one of the better series.

I loved this story, I have always liked Kellan and Chloe is perfect for him. My only problem with the story was Kellan's keeping the truth about his poisoning to himself. But, it all came out in the end! Can'twait for Seth's book!

Love this series, and Kellan (the hero in this installment) is my favorite character since it started. We have watched him grow and mature into a very worthy hero. Luckily he is paired with a just as worthy heroine. Plus he's a were, so the sex scenes are HOT.
