About the author

Phyllis Reynolds Naylor was born in Anderson, Indiana, US on January 4, 1933.

Her family were strongly religious with conservative, midwestern values and most of her childhood was spent moving a lot due to her father's occupation as a salesman.

Though she grew up during the Depression and her family did not have a lot of money, Naylor stated that she never felt poor because her family owned good books. Her parents enjoyed reading stories to the children--her father would imitate the characters in Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer--and her mother read to them every evening, "almost until we were old enough to go out on dates, though we never would have admitted this to anyone."

By the time Phyllis reached fifth grade, writing books was her favorite hobby and she would rush home from school each day to write down whatever plot had been forming in her head - at sixteen her first story was published in a local church magazine.

Phyllis has written over 80 books for children and young people. One of these books, "Shiloh," was awarded the Newbery Medal in 1992, was named a Notable Children's Book by the American Library Association and was also Young Adult Choice by the International Reading Association.

Naylor gets her ideas from things that happen to her or from things she has read. "Shiloh" was inspired by a little abused dog she and her husband found. The little dog haunted her so much that she had to write a story about him to get it out of her mind.

The third in a 4-book series about a pair of tabbies having adventures with their local cat club. I was a little worried because while we enjoyed the first book, I was less thrilled with the second book, where the leader of the cat club, Texas Jake, is unremittingly pompous and mean. He wasn't evolving as a character at all and he was pretty irritating. But things go better with this third installment. TJ is starting to see the light and the antics of Carlotta's kittens made Logan laugh out loud. One more book to go.

The cat pack is a group of cats that meet every new season. The only female cat Carlotta, is having kittens. Nobody has seen her before she announced about the kittens. The male cats: Marco, Polo, Boots, Elvis, and Texas Jake all want to help raise the kittens. Carlotta comes with five tiny little kittens. As the kittens get older the less time there is to find them loving homes. When will the kittens find homes?

As this was the only sequel to "The Grand Escape" the library had at the time, I grabbed it. Maybe I was too old, but as much as I enjoyed the book for a look at the characters I liked, I just felt it was a little overdone. Texas saying a "cat who can reeeeaaad" like that over and over got annoying when he did it maybe twice in the original book. Still, I enjoyed it.

This book is cute in that the male cats have absolutely no experience in raising kittens. It is rather entertaining how the scare them into going to sleep, or other such mistakes. However, I think this is my least favorite of the Cat Pack books.

Well, I have to admit, I love the Cat Pack books. I find them fun and quick reads to enjoy, and this book was no exception.
But, it didn't have the same charm as the others. Nonetheless, it was a fun quick read and I really enjoyed it. Phyllis Reynolds Naylor did another great job!

This story revolved around The Club of Mysteries, a group of cats. It was a very cute story and it was fun watching the kittens grow up and receive a happy ending. Loved the bond between mom cat and kittens.
