I'd sort of inherited John Colville's book The Fringes Of Power from a friend's house clearance and it had been laying around for some time as it is not the usual sort of book I read. So when I did finally pick it up I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed it. This book read far better than any thriller or horror story... it gave me a front row seat to World War Two. John Colville was the Private Secretary to Chamberlain, Churchill and Attlee and his writing is riveting as it sets the scene for the coming war and the following terrible years. For anyone remotely interested in these times it is a must read, but far more than that, it is really entertaining.

Esimerkiksi vaimonsa vaikeaa synnytystä hän luonnehtii pidättyväisen formaalisti: " [She] had a disagreeable time." Voisiko tuota englantilaisemmin sanoa. Kirjassa käytetään ehkä turhan paljon aikaa kaikkien tavattujen ihmisten sukuyhteyksien kuvailuun, mutta onhan ajankuvaa sekin, että jokainen coctail-kutsuilla tavattu henkilö on jonkun paikan jaarli tai kreivi.
