Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986), an Argentine writer of serious avant-garde poetry and prose, often wrote of the humor in the works of contemporaneous authors such as Franz Kafka. In response to this humor, Borges created a comedic tradition all his own. Humor in Borges studies the humor embedded in the fiction of a serious and metaphysical literary figure. René de Costa shows how Borges was concerned with making the embedded humor in his work more apparent without abandoning the essential story line. De Costa examines the ways in which Borges transformed established modes of writing—the chronicle, the book review, the obituary, the detective story—into genre parodies. He looks at Borges's canonical collections, identifying the humor in such simple things as a footnote, a false epigraph, or a postscript.
Humor in Borges couples elegant scholarship with a comedic edge and is both accessible and enjoyable to read.

Muy entretenida obra, útil para aprender a detectar las bromas secretas que Borges nos comparte en su prosa y poesía. Breve, como un taller de verano, pero suficiente para sentar las bases del ejercicio que deberemos hacer como lectores, releyendo una vez más las obras del maestro.

Libro que intenta echar luz sobre un aspecto que el autor cree que es poco explorado en el análisis de la obra de Borges: el humor. Tesis con la que no puedo estar totalmente de acuerdo; si uno lee entrevistas a Borges (y las hay de a cientos) el humor es algo que Borges mismo resalta todo el tiempo con respecto a su obra. Es cierto también que probablemente son los aspectos filosóficos, culturales y hasta políticos los más explotados por la crítica. Lo más entretenido del libro son las transcripciones de fragmentos de entrevistas en las que Borges le toma el pelo al entrevistador sin que este se de cuenta. Las de Jean de Milleret son el ejemplo perfecto, burlándose impunemente de su chauvinismo francés. También las reseñas críticas que Borges escribió para algunas revistas con respecto a Miguel de Unamuno o a Ortega ("vanidad palabrera") y Góngora a quien siempre está listo a pensar cada cien años y durante todo un año, siempre que podamos olvidarnos de él durante los noventa y nueve años restantes. Creo que incluso siendo un libro corto, podrían resumirse mejor las ideas. Por momentos. peca del mismo pecado que de Costa pretende criticar, la excesiva seriedad en el análisis de la obra literaria, la búsqueda de razones ocultas al estilo fábulas de Esopo.
