This guide to Rome isn't packed with detail of historic, archeaological or artistic treasures of the eternal city. However, like all Dorling Kindersley publications, it is set out in a format that is easily accessible, clear and concise. The theme is the top ten this and that of places to visit and things to do and see. Top ten places to go on a rainy day, top ten ancient sites etc. For the traveller, there are better and more detailed guides out there, but I gave this one four stars because I found the pocket size of this one perfect to fit into my camera bag, and the fold out maps were perfect to prevent me from getting lost in and out of the back streets on my daily expeditions. The only thing I was ignorant about was the Roman bus system. I kept hopping on and off buses and nobody asked for euros or tickets, before I sussed the system of ticket machines. Tante grazie!
(Cut and pasted from my review for the Venice version)
I used this and Rick Steves on our trip to Italy. I like the color pictures and the size of this one, but the information in Rick Steves is much more comprehensive and useful. I'd buy Rick's instead.
It's quite good, but not enough information about sites to use as your main book, focusing on lots and lots of lists instead. Other Top 10s seem to have more information on interesting sites. Probably this is a difficulty of Rome as there is just so much in Rome
One of the better Eyewitness Travel Top Ten guides that I've read! It's not very in-depth, but does give plenty of concise and useful information. The color pictures are well-chosen and I really liked the included maps and walking tour recommendations. The content of this Top Ten guide is better than most of the the other Eyewitness Travel Top Ten guides I've read, but that may be because Rome just has so much to offer! The guidebook offers a surface-level glimpse at a wide range of subjects, from writers based in Rome to ancient emperors, to cheap eats and recommendations for bars and clubs per local. I also appreciated the Streetsmart section at the back that gives very practical information on how to navigate Rome.
Top Ten Rome Highlights: 1. Vatican City 2. The Pantheon 3. Roman Forum 4. Galleria Borghese 5. Colosseum and Imperial Fora 6. Musei Capitolini 7. Museo Nazionale Romano 8. Santa Maria del Popolo 9. Villa Guilia 10. Ostia Antica
In short, a good travel reference for a summary, high-level overview of Rome.
I enjoy the format of the Top 10 travel guides as a starting place for research on a destination, but this one didn't resonate with me, unlike the others I've used. I didn't get a good sense of why I should visit the listed sights, and they all blended together, with similar photos and descriptions. More attention to what makes each stand out would improve the book. Also, this book contains over-the-top superlatives about everything it describes. Some might find that charming, but I felt it got in the way of actually learning about the destination. For example, the Sistine Chapel is apparently the best work of art humans have ever created (not presented as opinion but as a fact that the reader already knows). Made it hard to trust the descriptions and recommendations. The pull-out map was very useful, though.
If you're looking for a travel guide to Rome, I suggest the Rick Steves guide
Covers all the main attractions with adequate information. Contains sufficient information for the ordinary tourist who does not want a plethora of information.
This stayed in my purse for the whole week we were in Rome. Maps are great. We found the best gelateria, close to the Pantheon. It is even marked on the fold out map at the back of the book!
Went to Rome with this book and we enjoyed our time there. This book is compact and easy to read. With a list of only 10 best things of each category, it helps us to quickly decide where to go.
Nice try. A top 10 list of many things. What makes the list? What classifies a place as a 5th or a 7th? Magic. At least tripadvisor is free with an adblocker.
