El día de la mudanza es el evento catalizador de la vida de los protagonistas. Para los adultos que aparecen en la novela significa el quebrantamiento de sus expectativas sobre lo que debe ser la vida matrimonial; y, en los personajes jóvenes, representa la marca de lo que se fue y que los acompañará en sus vidas. Esta novela breve aborda la memoria como detonante narrativo, y construye un universo melancólico lleno de severidades.

Utilizando las voces de los miembros de una misma familia (hermano, hermana y madre) el escritor narra la historia de la decadencia económica de una familia, decadencia que se simboliza en el momento en que la familia tiene que cambiarse de casa para irse a vivir a un barrio pobre y feo en alguna ciudad de la costa Atlántica, posiblemente Cartagena.
