Abandoned due to disgusting, offensive and completely unnecessary rape scene. To be clear: offensive because of the context and the way it was described and presented, not simply because there was a rape scene. Suffice to say, this book should come with a big fuck-off trigger warning. I already thought the main characters were both idiots anyway, so there was no way I was going to continue with it after that.

At first I thought this was supposed to be a satire, but I wasn't sure what exactly was being satirised. Italian society as a whole? The literary scene? It seemed to lack focus. But as it went on I realised that it was just a lurid, violent black comedy without very much to say about the world. Maybe if you accept that you might find it entertaining, and some of the scenes involving the pathetic, failed satanist sect are quite amusing.
But I was put off by the misogyny (all the female characters

Won't be for everyone...never thought I would be interested in a dress about a satanic cult but it was just so good. The plot twisted and turned. The Roman backdrop was just what I needed. The Argo like historical plot added even more dimension. I LOVED it! ...more

The book has its faults. Some of the descriptions are a bit heavy-handed and the short chapters mean you’re continually flipping from one storyline to the next and back. It all adds to the general feeling of disorientation though. Remember what Wikipedia says about a farce—“viewers are encouraged not to try to follow the plot in order to avoid becoming confused and overwhelmed”—well the same goes for readers here and, yet, to be fair, I picked up on all major plot points throughout the reading; ...more

...more

È finita l'era...

dei libri pessimi finiti per puntiglio.

Questo è l'ultimo, giurin giurello.

Personaggi tagliati con l'accetta e terribilmente statici.
Trama inesistente.

Adoro!

I hadn't heard of this book but I'm glad I stumbled across it in my library sale section. I picked it up for 20 cents and decided to give it a go. I must say, the cover looks so gorgeous in that vintage circus poster kinda way. After reading reading some reviews from other readers, I was worried about what I might find in this book but I'm glad that I persevered anyway.

We'll begin with what I didn't enjoy. I was shocked by how many taboo issues were addressed in this novel and how there wasn't a

"Let the games begin" (Italian edition published in 2009; English edition published in 2013) is a novel by Italian author Niccolò Ammaniti, a member of the '90s literary group known as the "Cannibals".
The tale is hunting, somewhat blaspheme, captivating; it is the perfect balance between realism and fiction. A millionaire party is organized in a historical Villa in Rome and all Italian famous VIPs are invited to join an absurdly rich and weird hunting party that will end in disaster. The resulti

Niccolo Ammaniti first came into my life through the superb, thrilling novel "I'm not scared" a couple of years ago. The writing was clever, suspenseful and exquisite, the storyline intriguing and surprising.

So, as soon as I heard that his latest book had been translated I got myself a copy (this time, on audio, read by the absolutely outstanding Rupert Degas, whose accents and intonations are flawless). Well, if anyone told me that there was a misprint on the cover, and it's in fact written by

Mah.

Nope. Can't do it. Don't usually rate a book I can't finish - it's unfair - but this one deserves it. It is NOT OK to include a scene describing in detail how a main character rapes his wife and she enjoys it. I get how he's a big, bad Satanist and all that, but, sorry, it's just not on. Disgusted. ...more

★★★
