Alison Dare, Little Miss Adventures
Alison Indiana Jones meets Lara Croft in fabulous, graphic adventures. Alison Dare is not your typical twelve-year-old. She's the daughter of an archaeologist/adventurer and the masked hero known as the Blue Scarab. To top it off, she's also the niece of an international super-spy; it's no surprise that a craving for danger is in her blood! Unfortunately, her parents have locked her away at the prestigious St. Joan's Academy for Girls, hoping that this would lead to a more "normal" life for their daughter.
But despite all the strict rules at the school, Alison and her best pals - Wendy and Dot - somehow manage to find themselves involved in adventures that rival those of Alison's globetrotting, planet-saving relatives. Alison Dare: Little Miss Adventures is a trio of vignettes about the spunky, daredevil daughter of super-hero, The Blue Scarab and a world famous archeologist, beautiful Alice Dare. She has international spy, Johnny Dare in her corner, too. Johnny's her uncle! In these three action-packed stories, Alison relies on her best friends, Dot and Wendy and her knack for sniffing out the bad guy.
These daring adventures will appeal to the younger reader, up through middle school. The comic format will reach most reluctant readers, although it would have been nice to see the illustrations in color. A fun, adrenaline-pumping, heart-thumping adventure, with a little mystery thrown in to boot, that is sure to please.

Alison Dare really makes some terrible decisions. The plots are mildly intriguing, but it's hard to enjoy them when the main character is making such poor decisions and generally acting like a spoiled, entitled child.

Cute, but not amazing. Maybe it's because I don't have any of the Alison Dare background and it was a collection of short stories...

Reason for Reading: The summary intrigued me as did the fact that both the author and Illustrator are Canadians.
Alison Dare is a 12-year-old girl with the heart of an Indiana Jones. She wants "swashbuckling adventure, death defying danger, a little intrigue, romance, action" and she doesn't have to look far it. Her mother is a world renowned archaeologist and her father is the superhero the Blue Scarab. Both her mother and father are being stalked by an evil baron and various other bad guys and if she doesn't find adventure when she's with them she seems cable of discovering it easily enough on her own.
This was a real fun, action-packed comic which at times was either following and Indy Jones vibe or full of superhero action. Alison is always accompanied by her two best friends, one is the brains, the other the squeamish beauty. This particular volume is divided into three separate stories. The first involves Alison finding a Genie lamp while on an excavation with her mother during spring break and as most people find out, you must be careful what you wish for. In the second story Alison tells her two friends the story of how her parents met and how her father became the Blue Scarab, all in the middle of a newscast which reports on the Blue Scarab fighting near death with the Ice Woman. Finally the last story brings everyone together as Alison tries to get her parents back together by planning a picnic at the museum where her mother is working on a display of an Incan mummified baby. While that's not working out as planned the evil Baron von Baron descends upon them capturing them and stealing the mummy plus we get to meet another member of the Dare family, Uncle Johnny, a secret spy agent.
Each story was fun and exciting. I enjoyed Alison Dare. Her ego is a bit big for her boots but then aren't all adventurers like that, Indiana Jones, Laura Croft, etc. This will especially appeal to girls and is an entertaining, sometimes humorous read.

Let me start by saying even though this is Volume 1 of the set it really read like Volume 2. We are literally thrown into the action with pretty much no introduction. I found Volume 2 to seem more introductory but oh well.
Little Miss Adventures is a series of stories that range from Alison getting into trouble on one of her mother's dig sites, the story of how her parents met (my favorite!) her mother is a world-renowned archaeologist and her father is a masked superhero, the Blue Scarab, to Alison helping her parents fight bad guys at the museum.
I love, love LOVE the illustration style used in these graphic novels. So crisp and clean but also really detailed. It lacks nothing by being in black and white. While I didn't actually read comics as a kid, these certainly would have been the kind to catch my fancy and they still do today!
I think my favorite characters would have to be, Alison of course (she'd kill me if I said otherwise), her father the Blue Scarab (and also a librarian) and her Uncle the master of disguise Johnny Dare. He would show up at the most random times totally unrecognizable there to help Alison and her family fight the bad guys!
Overall a fun graphic novel adventure good for any age!

I really dug these graphic novels. Alison is the daughter of a superhero and an archeologist and definitely is not beyond getting into trouble with her own adventures. I love the style of these books, along with the characters and the constantly moving plot. They're the type of graphic novels I want in my elementary school library and they're definitely making it on the list for next year. I think it offers a lot to kids who like superheros and those who like real life stories. It's a great blend of genres, which is something we need more of in this world. I believe that both boys and girls will love these graphic novels and I look forward to reading more about Alison and her adventures.
