The Dark Prince

Rate this book
Slave to her step-father and his daughter, Isadora longed for the day when she could leave her manor for good. Little did she know it would come sooner than she thought. When the Dark Prince comes to claim her step-sister as his bride, she forces Isadora to switch places with her, thinking no one would want to claim Isadora as their own. The Dark Prince disagreed. He is the king’s favored assassin, and the hand of justice that’s an extension of the king’s will. And now Isadora must share his bed. Yet something is wrong back at the Dark Prince’s castle, where his people gaze at her with a lingering darkness in their eyes. A beast roams the woods at night, but no one seems to care. A witch in the woods admits the Dark Prince and his people are under a curse, and Isadora might be their only chance to undo it before it consumes the entire kingdom.

While the beginning was intriguing, in the end my excitement was lost.
There were mistakes, things weren’t clarified or developed adequately and were confusing. The heroine’s character growth was abrupt and the world building was insufficient.

Honest Review:
I honestly don’t want to post this. However, I feel like I need to be honest in my reading habits, and therefore, here it is.
This book has some potential, but it needs about 300 more pages to be, in any shape form or fashion, an impactful fantasy.
It is told in a dual POV about a dark prince, needing to break his dark curse. The ads for this book that are pushed out by the author on TikTok will catch the attention of absolutely everyone who likes a morally grey male protagonist. The hype, however, was very short-lived, as I read this book in a couple of hours. There was way too much showing and not enough telling. There were plot holes, typos that bring you out of the story, and lack of transition into different aspects of the story. It was very hard to keep up with, and I had to reread sections at times. The love trope did not come through translation, and it wasn’t very believable that these two strangers had any connection at all.
With that being said, I feel like the author could go back in and flush out the scenes and make it more believable. As I’ve stated it has potential, but in its current state, I would not recommend reading it. I do, however, hope to see improvements one day.

1/5 🌟
1.5/5 🌶️ (no actual spice, but some hands go places)

9% of the way through the book was this line, “Would you rather be back at the manner?” Manner? I think you mean manor. Just went back to the book description where it says “if you manuscript contains errors, reach out to the author ASAP...” there is even a typo in the note about there being errors in the story.

I’d forgive all of the poor editing if the story had made sense. It started off well, was kind of bland through the middle, and it really went off the rails in the last 20%. Worst of all, the promised steamy scenes, didn’t deliver. This one just wasn’t ready to be published - even on kindle unlimited.

Not for me.

DNF at about 55%.

This book needs a lot of editing. Misspelled words, paragraphs that repeated the same info multiple times, disconnected and contradictive events happening throughout and then some.

The story was all over the place and the characters were shallow at best. There was soooo much interrupted spicy scenes as well, and then they didn't even do it in the end. I mean, come on. That's just wrong.

Don’t trust the BookTok & Bookstagrammers on this one! It would need major editing - strengthening dialogue, removing repeated phrases, correcting typos, correcting errors, correcting pacing, “show, not tell”- but this could be a hidden gem. It starts strong, but goes off the rails when they arrive at the castle and falls apart from there. It’s branded as a medieval story, but has lines like “jump his bones.” Modern dialogue took me right out of the story and I started to wonder if the author was even serious about the book. There’s potential here for a great story but not in this current form.

Giving it 2 stars instead of 0 because:

- Someone actually had the courage and dedication to write and publish an entire book. That deserves a star!

- It’s got promise! The ideas and creativity are there, but it’s like someone published the rough draft instead of the final version. The author needs a strong editor to help shape this into something more polished.

A lot it potential but a definite miss.

I’ll be honest, I think this one needs to go back to the editing stage. Overall the book had an interesting concept and introduced a plethora of colorful characters that ended up falling flat under a short page count and a rushed finale. The constant inaccuracies from page to page distracted from the story as a whole, and I felt myself flipping back and forth to try and figure out if I was confused or if the narration was truly that unreliable. A basic spin off on Beauty and the Beast, only to end with a plot twist that was thrown down in the middle of an already overly-chaotic climax. Finished it against all odds, but nearly DNF’d this poor thing every other chapter.

My lanta. It started off so well, if you can get past the errors, but honestly it went off the rails and nothing made sense and I’m still so so confused.

This one needs to go back to the editing phase. It could be such a great story with Phantom mixed with Beauty and The Beast vibes but all I got were vibes of pantser forgetting their plot.

While there were a few typos I did enjoy this book! It was definitely more character based but I was always interested and wanted to read more. Definitely a beauty and the beast retelling though, but I agree with the others that it needed more and the ending felt rushed in a way. I was surprised it was wrapped up in like 20 pages

Listen, I know this has been done before but it’s so much fun. It starts like Cinderella poor Isadora is being treated like an abused slave. The trauma she suffers continues and she is forced to take her evil step sisters place with the cruel prince. Lucky for her it turns out okay. Then the story shifts into a Beauty and the Beast retelling and this one is my favorite so I was a happy reader. Everything with the curse was very interesting. The take on it was very nicely done but the story took some wild turns at the end. It wasn’t really a plot twist more of a magic trick. Isadora was able to figure out things that came out of no where and how do you ask… because she has anxiety from her abuse. Which I guess. But the way she was able to solve some of these puzzles wasn’t even a little bit realistic and I know what you’re going to say this is a monster fantasy Hilda of course it doesn’t make sense. But this was crazy!!!! It was too crazy. So around 70% of this story I kind of lost interest.

And Omgoodness there’s a mailing list sign up bonus that is a whole other story with an evil brother waiting for them at the castle which was very odd to me because it’s a whole other story. It bothered me that it wasn’t included in the book. But that’s a whole other review.

Read this for what it is, a monster romance with very little spice and a lot of death.

Again, bookstagram baited me, and actually, it was the author's own ig post soooooo that goes to say that you can't reallyyyyyy trust a biased post. DNF @ chap 16.

The whole plot seemed really good, what with the chosen bride being the unwanted daughter by the Dark Prince. Who clearly has issues and is hiding everything from Isadora as well as concealing himself being a mask.

It's something about a curse to be passed down, or his people will be damned. Great idea.

But the way the FC is progressing is a bit off, like she is supposed to be terrified and suppressed, but she goes off as fierce and all after leaving her home. It's rather a vague transformation, considering she has been suppressed for a while.

This dual POV does help to spice things by letting me see in Tyr's eyes and his feelings, which is cute. But he grew affectionate of Isadora too fast that it kinda doesn't tally.

Raven's works, The Lost Siren, had the same type of characters in terms of character development, and it didn't interest me that much.

There are errors in the book, such as repeated exact paragraphs and repetition in the characters' movements, which do not add up. It feels like it wasn't proofread before being published. Won't recommend.

The literary journey through 'The Dark Prince' by Raven Storm leaves one with an ambiguous sense of disappointment tinged with admiration for certain aspects. Primarily, the issue lies with the predictability of the book that strips away the excitement of the unknown, a crucial component of any story, particularly in a genre that thrives on suspense and intrigue.

While I enjoyed the transformation of the heroine from a timid servant into a formidable queen, the character development felt rather rushed. The process of growth and maturation is an intricate dance of experiences and introspection, and it was disappointing to see this condensed into a compressed timeline. Despite this, the development was admirable and gave readers a glimpse into the potential depth of Storm's characters.

The hero's character, on the other hand, was somewhat vexing. I found him whiney and overly dramatic, especially in his unwavering and at times overbearing need to protect everyone. Now, I appreciate a protective hero as much as the next reader, but the constant emphasis on this trait became repetitive. There's something endearing about a stoic hero who demonstrates his concern in less overt ways, and this element was sorely missed in the portrayal of our 'Dark Prince'.

The saving grace of 'The Dark Prince' was, without a doubt, the ensemble of supporting characters. They added much-needed zest and color to the storyline, preventing it from descending into the depths of monotony. Each character was distinctive, lending different flavors to the narrative and providing breaks from the main storyline's predictability.

In conclusion, while 'The Dark Prince' had its moments of charm, the overarching predictability and the overly dramatic hero made the reading journey less satisfying than one might hope. Raven Storm's novel could have been a rich tapestry of suspense and intrigue, but unfortunately, it fell short of the mark. The potential is there, it's just a matter of harnessing it in a way that creates a more engaging, unpredictable narrative that keeps readers on their toes.

It’s a no for me.

Pros:
💙 the story had good world building and the potential for a great magic system.
💙the romance was very sweet
💙the characters were likable and developed fairly well
💙plot was good when it made sense

Cons:
😑 you know how in The Vampire Diaries anything that the writers couldn’t come up with a solution for they just had Bonnie fix it with some random magic? That’s this book. The plot was going so well and then it felt like the author wrote herself into a corner and couldn’t figure it out so she just had some random magic solve it. Very disappointing.
😑the end of the story was convoluted as hell, it made no sense at all.
😑the villains were so poorly written, and the twist plot wasn’t really a twist it was just thrown together haphazardly

The beginning of the books was great and had so much potential, but it seemed like the author gave up and rushed through the second half just to get it done.

It felt like I'm reading a 15 year old's wet dream. Dark Prince was not "dark" at all lol. And female MC was insufferable. I understand that the author tried to write about processing trauma but the actions of the character who was supposedly abused and traumatised didn't seem realistic. Her actions and feelings felt cartoonish. Romance was barely there. I mean there was a pull between characters but it felt empty. I was really bored and fed up with their consistent self loathing. There wasn't really much of a fantasy except for a witch which was a hilariously lame witch imo. If you are here for the worldbuilding, I'm afraid you're going to be disappointed cause there were none really. Most of the time I couldn't even imagine the places the characters talked about. Plot could have been interesting if it wasn't processed so badly. Overall this book felt like a badly written beauty and the beast retelling trying to do what SJM did but failed miserably. Even 1 star is too much

Desperately needs editing

So many grammatical errors. Names in the wrong places, words missing from sentences. I’m not sure who edited this, but they skimmed the story at best because it read well the first half and then the second half was awful.
The characters were chaos and not in a good way. I enjoyed it in the beginning and then it just went downhill exponentially worse as it went on.
Isadora was meant to be a badass but she was so wishy washy.
And Aella being the villain and then not, and then the villain again and then she’s going to be queen. I just don’t get it.
The end was so chaotic and just didn’t fit with the beginning of the story. It’s as if the first half of the book was written In one tone and the end was written like a never ending tween drama.

They never were intimate even with all the touches and kissing. I would give it a 0.5 in the spice category. I kept waiting on something to happen and it never did, they would come close and then the dramatic self loathing would pull them apart. It happened too many times and became annoying. I kept hoping once the story was resolved something would happen and nothing.

Jeezus....the story started out so well and then...BOOM nothing made sense. There was no clear plot. The characters and their relationships with each other had no logic.
I was getting whiplash from things happening then suddenly stopping then suddenly someone else shows up then this happens. Psych! No it didn't! There's this beast then that beast, then another beast. The witch is here then the witch is there. The witch is stabbed the witch is alive. The witch is stabbed again. The king is killed. No he's not. He's alive. Tyr is dead. No he's not! Because some random ass character who appears out of nowhere is a witch and helps save the day.
He half sister princess is a bitch, no she's not, yes she is, no she's not.

PICK A LANE AND STICK TO IT. JEEZUS FUXKING CHRIST.

I approached The Dark Prince with high hopes, drawn in by the promise of a captivating story. However, I must echo the sentiments expressed in other reviews. The frequent spelling errors were distracting, making it difficult to remain immersed in the narrative. More importantly, the main character’s development felt inconsistent, lacking the depth and progression necessary to truly resonate with the reader.

That said, the story’s foundation holds significant potential. The concept is intriguing, and with more polish—both in terms of editing and character development—this book could evolve into a truly compelling read. It’s clear that Raven Storm has a creative vision; I only wish it had been executed with greater care and nuance.

I love a Beauty and the Beast retelling, and this being combined with Phantom of the Opera really intrigued me!

This story had a lot of promise but was sadly let down by a lot of errors and mistakes. Some sentences had words missing, one paragraph was repeated, and there were a few points with almost random words added in. At one point, it even states a good character as saying the big-bad's lines, which would have been an interesting plot twist but was ultimately confusing.
Several parts were a bit confusing and lacking clarity, and I had to reread parts several times to try and gain an understanding of what was meant to be happening.

I was hooked on this book. I love Isadora and Tyr, their characters are complex and their relationship develops over the course of the book which I feel is better than an instant connection. I think I would prefer more description just to give a stronger image of what the world is like.

Spoilers:
I love how Isadora fulfils her role towards the end of the book, even acting like a queen. I also appreciate the redemption arc of Aella, she is written well and in the end I do feel sorry for her.

Though there are a few spelling and grammatical mistakes in the book, the story more than makes up for it. This book sucked me in within the first 15 pages and by the 30th page, I was madly in love with the main characters!

Raven Storm gives a fresh take on a classic tale and the only disappointing part of this book is that it isn't longer!!

juvenile and apathetic

the heroine is illused and resentful without a spark of intelligence to better her position.
is there a worse trope than that of the mistreated cinderella?
these days they don't even write a Cinderella type with redeeming good nature!
the pathetic apathy was so off putting I rage quit 8 pages in.
do not recommend.
unreadable.

Decent story and characters.

I really liked this story, yes there's a few spelling mistakes and extra letters where something was deleted or changed. For me, it diddecent sn't actually take anything away.

The story was fab. It feels like a beauty and the beast retelling, and the characters have good story arcs

Great story, needs editing

This story is very good! I live the characters the plot twists everything. It has a HUGE distraction, though. It desperately needs editing. Repeted paragraphs, miss-used words, ect. I wish I could give more stars, but it honestly is hard to be in the moment when you have to figure out what the author is trying to say.

This book has a lot of potential. Unfortunately this book was not edited properly( quite a few misspelled words, sentences repeating and such). The beginning took quite long so the ending felt very rushed. And the epilogue isn’t even in the book, you have to subscribe to a newsletter to get it, which was quite disappointing.

I am sorry but I'm dropping it.. the story is bland.. I'm 75% through the book and all I've got is MFL is still trying to get to know MML and there's sudden story development thrown at you.

All they've done is travel to the castle and settle in it.

Relationship development ❤️❤️

Nope.

Im really frustrated as this had the makings of a great book but fell completely apart. I ended up skipping huge chunks just because I wanted to know Tyr ended up okay but even in the end his character became far too … blah. There was no real build up for the characters to fall in love and it all became confusing when explaining the curse. Such a sin.
