I'm not sure how clear this review will be since all my thoughts are scrambled together. This book was such a disappointment to me. I really enjoyed the first book in this series - Seducing the Heiress - so when this one finally came out I didn't hesitate to buy it - BIG, BIG MISTAKE!!!

The heroine of this one (Lyndsey) is the sister to the heroine of the first book (Portia). Lyndsey's mother is trying to get her married off to a duke - as she tried (unsuccessfully) with her sister in book one. However, Lyndsey has no desire to be married to a duke, much less any man. She has a dream!!! Her dream, to become a spinster and open up her own investigation agency!! C'mon, seriously?!?!? This is based in the 1800's and granted, I know it's fiction, but this is just pushing it for me. So that was my first inclination that this book may not be so hot, but I thought maybe the author would work it out. Ummmm, not so much.

Someone is killing servants and Lyndsey is CONVINCED that the killer is the Earl of Mansfied (based solely on very vague circumstantial evidence mind you). She decides to take it upon herself to investigate the murders (can you say TSTL??!!). 3/4 of the book deals with this and the continued repeat of the vague circumstantial evidence (she repeats it to herself over and over). At some point, a spark forms between Lyndsey and Thane (he's the Earl of Mansfield) but I honestly couldn't tell you when or where because it just wasn't very realistic (maybe the fact that Lyndsey thought he was a murderer had something to do with it - ya think??).

Anyways, there are other stories going on at the time as well, like some secret that Lyndsey's mother has regarding their time in India, which it seems will carry on to the next book. There is also Thane's ward, Jocelyn (which I'm sorry, the storyline was so boring). One would think that Portia and Colin from book 1 would make an appearance in this one, but nope, you would be wrong. They are mentioned though, quite a lot and it's clear they are expecting their first child in a few months (that fact was repeated about 5 times throughout the book).

The mystery of the killer is solved (and it's rather obvious). The book probably got much better in the end because the pace finally seem to pick up and interesting things started to happen between the H/H; but by that point, I was done. I was skimming through it so I didn't pay much attention.

I think I've wasted enough time on this book, so that's my review. This book will now be donated to my local library for some other poor soul to suffer through.

The story was quick and sweet. There was a little bit of repetitiveness in the dialogue, but the mystery aspect of the novel kept the sugary sweet romance at a nice balance.

This book was a mess. It was funny, but it's absolutely a mess. The heroine is probably one of the most unbelievable, unsympathetic characters I've read about in a long time. She's a young Regency era debutante and heiress, and she's convinced herself that she'll be able to never marry and open her own detective agency. She does lots of TSTL stuff like sneaking into an earl's house dressed as a maid to spy on him. I really didn't like the hero, either. We are left with lots of loose ends regarding his extended family with whom he doesn't get along - the scenes with him interacting with his uncle could have been totally removed, since we get no resolution in the end. I was disappointed in this one, because the plot sounded a lot more interesting than it actually was.

Lindsey will auf gar keinen Fall heiraten! Lieber möchte sie eine Agentur eröffnen, in der sie als Ermittlerin kleine Fälle für die gehobenen Gesellschaft bearbeitet. Blöd nur, dass es das oberste Ziel ihrer Mutter ist, sie höchstmöglich zu verheiraten.
Lord Mansfield ist gerade einem Serienmörder auf der Spur, der als Würger von Serpentine die Londoner Gesellschaft in Atem hält. Einer von Lidnseys Verehrern könnte er Täter sein. Thane versucht die reiche Erbin zu beschützen, doch Lindsey will sich gar nicht beschützen lassen...

Im ersten Teil kam Lindseys älteste Schwester unter die Haube. Es ist ein Jahr vergangen und nun ist die 18-Jährige die reichste Erbin der Saison und somit der beste Fang für alle heiratswilligen Junggesellen. Lindsey kam mir im ersten Teil noch recht jung und unbändig vor, daher war ich gespannt, ob sie in ihrer Geschichte mehr Reife zeigen würde.
Tatsächlich weiß sie ganz genau was sie will oder viel mehr was sie nicht will. Dennoch merkte ich ihr immer noch an, dass sie sehr jung ist und nicht immer wohlüberlegt handelt. Es gibt definitiv reifere Protagonistinnen im Genre, dennoch konnte ich sie gut leiden.

Thane Mansfield ist das komplette Gegenteil von der temperamentvollen Lindsey. Er ist pflichtbewusst und streng. Er kümmert sich um ein Mündel und will nur heiraten, damit dieses einen Zugang zur Gesellschaft bekommt. Thane war ein guter Kerl, der etwas undurchschaubar agiert, sich aber um seine Schutzbefohlenen kümmert.
Beide treffen zufällig in einer komischen Situation aufeinander und so hält Lindsey nur das Schlechteste von Thane und glaubt sogar, dass er der Würger ist. Durch eine List erpresst er sie zu einer Verlobung.
Für mich war ihre Verbindung ein wenig die Schwachstelle der Geschichte. Thane und Lindsey passen einfach nicht zusammen. Sie sind wie Hund und Katz. Ich konnte keine Verbindung zwischen ihren Spüren und so war auch all die körperliche Nähe eine rein mechanische Beschreibung, ohne Gefühl. Das war wirklich schade, denn im ersten Band passte es bei dem Pärchen einfach besser.

Die Krimihandlung war eine unterhaltsame Abwechslung, die recht spät ins Rollen kommt und noch mit einer Überraschung aufwarten konnte. Was es mit den Eltern der Mädchen auf sich hat, erfahren wir im Finale der Reihe. Auch hier sind wieder ein paar Andeutungen gefallen, dass die Familie möglicherweise zu unrecht zu ihrer wohlhabenden Stellung gekommen sein mag.

"Traue niemals einem Earl" von Olivia Drake ist der zweite Band der Ladies von London Reihe, in der sich Lindsey vehement gegen eine Ehe sträubt. Leider vermisste ich die Chemie zwischen den Protagonisten. Dafür konnte mich die Rahmenhandlung um die Suche nach dem Serienmörder gut unterhalten. Ich hoffe, die Autorin haut im finalen Band noch mal einen raus.

There's a serial killer killing young women of common birth. Thane is on his tracks.

Lindsey is also on the killer's tracks. Unfortunately, Lindsey suspects Thane of being the killer, even though she is enthralled with him

Meanwhile, Lindsey's obnoxious, social climbing mother wants her to marry an unsavoury duke.

Thane is not a rogue, but I found his two "romantic" episodes with Lindsey obnoxious. Thane goes under Lindsey's skirts and Lindsey does not object. This happens after a very short time.

I found the ending very abrupt. There was no resolution to Thane's estrangement from his family and no further information about his ward's progress in her rehabilitation.

I liked the first two-thirds of the story and then skimming ensued.

The heroine’s desire to become an investigator and her mother’s motivations seemed to come out of nowhere. There were no explanations or conclusions. The mother was terrible and we never see what her secret is and why she is so set on a daughter marrying a Duke.

I enjoyed the fun of the plot, but too many loose ends and not enough investment in the characters led to my less than satisfied state with this read.

I loved this. I deducted one star only because I'm probably not going to read it again. This is a slow burn, with full consent between heroine and hero. There is no forced marriage. Thane is very sweet, romantic and Lyndsey is very independent. Lyndsey's mother is extremely pushy. The sex scene is not explicit. The sister from the first novel us mentioned but not seen.

Spannende Romane, Krimigeschichten und Abenteuer sind das Einzige was Lindsey Crompton interessiert. Als Schwester von Portia Crompton, welche letztes Jahr geheiratet hat, ist sie nun die erste Erbin aus dem Hause Crompton und ihre Mutter versucht diese Aussicht taktisch zu nutzen, um sie mit dem Lord Wayford zu verkuppeln. Doch ist Lindsey nicht an ihn interessiert und als dann auch noch der interessante Thane Mansfield auftaucht, gerät sie eine gefährliche Beziehung. Jedoch geschehen im Abendgrauen im Hyde Park Morde an Dienerinnen des Adels und Mansfield und Wayford werden verdächtigt. Was steckt hinter der ganzen Geschichte und zu was führt die Beziehung von Mansfield und Lindsey?
Cover: Abgestimmt zum ersten Band der Reihe «Die Ladies in London» passen die beiden Covers wunderbar zusammen. Für mich passt es perfekt in die Regency-Zeit mit dem Kleid und der Person im Vordergrund. Der Hintergrund könnte ein wenig ablenken zu der eigentlichen Kulisse Londons mit seinen feinen und vornehmen Reihenhäusern, dennoch harmoniert es sehr schön zum Vordergrund.
Schreibstil: Auch wie schon im ersten Band der Reihe konnte mich Olivia Drake mit ihrem Schreibstil und den Aufbau ihrer Geschichte überzeugen. Für mich ist sie einer meiner neuen Lieblingsautorin im Bereich Regency-Romane und ich freue mich jetzt schon auf weiteren Lesestoff von ihr. Durch ihren Schreibstil bekommt man ein Gefühl ein Teil der Geschichte zu sein und kann sich sehr gut in die Protagonisten reinfühlen, zudem geht einem der rote Faden beim Lesen nicht verloren und alles ist verständlich und zusammenhängend erklärt.
Charaktere: Lindsey Crompton konnte ich schon im ersten Band der Reihe kennenlernen und mochte sie gleich von Anfang an. Auch wie ihre Schwester möchte, sie den englischen Aristokraten aus dem Weg gehen und dafür lieber eine Detektivagentur gründen und Rätsel lösen, auch wenn sie dafür eine alte Jungfer bleibt. Bloss hat ihre Mutter wie schon bei ihrer Schwester dabei andere Pläne, die sie in eine Heirat mit Lord Wayford zwingen. Lindsey lässt das aber nicht auf sich sitzen und versucht des Öfteren durch Listen und klugen Plänen ihn zu entkommen. Unerschrocken und mutig schleicht sie sich somit in das edelhafte Herz von Lord Mansfield der mehrere Jahre als Soldat gedient hat. Er selbst ist dem Täter auf der Spur, der mehrere Dienerinnen umbringt. Dabei kommen Lindsey und Mansfield immer näher zusammen und finden eine gemeinsame Leidenschaft, die sich dann auch mit der Zeit zur Liebe zwischen den Beiden entwickelt. Dennoch bleiben sie bis zum Ende ihren wunderbaren Charakteren treu und können sich gemeinsam der Gesellschaft und dem Täter stellen.
Zudem tauchte in dem zweiten Band wieder die Schwester Blythe auf, ihr gemeinsames Kindermädchen aus Indien und natürlich die hitzköpfige Mutter und ihr freundlicher Vater. Im Gesamtbild haben sie für mich eine vornehme, freundliche Familie abgegeben, auch wenn ihre Mutter zu sehr eingenommen von ihren Verlobungsplänen war. Auch lernten wir das Mündel von Lord Mansfield Joselyn kennen, welche leider nicht mehr laufen kann und beide ihre Eltern verloren hat. Mit der Freundschaft zwischen den zwei Geschwistern und Joselyn blühte die Geschichte nur noch mehr auf und ich konnte sie alles schnell ins Herz schliessen.
Handlung: Das Buch beginnt langsam, aber dennoch sehr spannend. Direkt wird man in die Welten von Lindsey Crompton und Thane Mansfield eingeführt. Auch passieren gleich die ersten Ereignisse der Morde und die Verschwundenen Dienerinnen, die Lindsey versucht ausfindig zu machen. Dabei stürzt sie sich in alle möglichen Abenteuer der Gesellschaft. Für mich ist die Spannung zum Ende des Buches immer mehr gewachsen und ging dann auch nicht mehr verloren. Jedoch hätte ich mir gerne noch einen schönen Prolog gewünscht, weil das Buch ein wenig aus der Luft aufhört. Somit bleiben noch ein paar kleine Fragen offen, die ich gerne noch geklärt hätte. Dennoch war es ein sehr schönes Ende und die Spannung konnte mich so sehr packen, dass ich nicht mehr aufhören konnte zu lesen.
Fazit: Ein krimireicher Regency-Roman mit mutigen Protagonisten und einer leidenschaftlichen Liebesgeschichte!

„Traue niemals einem Earl“ ist der zweite Band der „Die Ladys von London“ - Reihe von Olivia Drake.
Miss Lindsey Crompton ist die mittlere der drei unkonventionellen Crompton-Schwestern und momentan die reichste Erbin der Saison. Die Aussicht auf einen Adelstitel kann Lindsey im Gegensatz zu ihrer ehrgeizigen Mutter überhaupt nicht reizen und so hat sie vor, allen adligen Goldgräbern einen Korb zu geben und lieber ihrer einzigen Leidenschaft, der Detektivarbeit, nachzugehen. Thane Parker, der Earl of Mansfield, betreibt gerade seine eigenen Ermittlungen in mehreren mysteriösen Mordfällen, als ihm Lindsey dabei in die Quere kommt. Da der Hauptverdächtige unter ihren Verehrern ist, erpresst er Lindsey zu einer Verlobung, die ihm im Laufe der Zeit immer reizvoller erscheint.

Schon im ersten Teil haben die drei Schwestern bewiesen, dass sie mit allen Wassern gewaschen sind und sie sich von den strengen Regeln der adligen Gesellschaft nicht einschränken lassen. Nachdem die älteste Schwester alle Träume ihrer Mutter von einem Titel begraben hat, soll nun Lindsey für eine adlige Hochzeit herhalten. Diese will jedoch lieber ledig bleiben und eine Detektei gründen.
Thane ist ein gefeierter Kriegsheld und will auch nach seiner Rückkehr nach London nicht untätig bleiben. Also bietet er der Polizei seine Hilfe bei den aktuellen Mordermittlungen an. Zunächst unterschätzt er Lindsey völlig und ist überrascht, dass sie komplett anders ist als alle Frauen, die er kennt. Sie lässt sich von ihm nicht bevormunden und gibt ihm ausreichend Kontra, was seinen Jagdinstinkt zusätzlich anstachelt. Ihre Wortgefechte sind sehr amüsant und ich mochte schon im Vorgängerband, wie mutig und unerschrocken Lindsey agiert.
Der Schreibstil der Autorin liest sich leicht und flüssig und die Handlung ist sehr unterhaltsam. Am Ende war ich von der Auflösung sogar richtig überrascht und nun bin ich auf die Geschichte der jüngsten Schwester gespannt.

Mein Fazit:
Mir hat das Buch sehr gut gefallen und die Mischung aus Regency Lovestory und ein wenig Crime ist gut gelungen. Von mir gibt es gern eine Leseempfehlung!

Darum geht es:
Thane Parker, der Earl of Mansfield, ermittelt verdeckt in den eigenen (blaublütigen) Reihen im Fall des "Würgers von Serpentine". Dabei erregt er den Verdacht von Miss Lindsey Crompton, die gerade versucht sich eines unerwünschten Verehrers zu entziehen. Doch was, wenn dieses Vorhaben nicht ganz ungefährlich ist?

Meine Bewertung:
"Frauen brachten nichts als Ärger." Das ist der erste Satz des Buches, geschrieben aus der Sicht von Thane Pallister, dem Earl of Mansfield. Im Nachhinein betrachtet ein etwas drastischer Satz, wenn man bedenkt, weshalb Thane das denkt, aber nun gut, so kann man Leser auch fesseln. Am Ende ist Thane tatsächlich dem weiblichen Geschlecht deutlich weniger abgeneigt als dieser Satz es vermuten lässt. Im Gegenteil, er ist sogar mitfühlend und lernwillig.

Lindsey Crompton ist die (zum Leidwesen ihrer Mutter) nur bürgerliche erste Erbin der Saison, die viel lieber Detektiv spielen möchte und Blaublüter verachtet. Sie ist ein wenig naiv in ihrem Verhalten, wie sie sich vorstellt, später eine Detektei führen zu können und ihre "Ermittlungen" durchführt, aber trotzdem aufgeweckt und sympathisch.

Beide zusammen ergeben aber ein dynamisches Gespann, die Dialoge sind witzig, die Nebenfiguren zum Teil aus dem ersten Band bekannt (die eher unsympathische Mutter, der abwesende Vater, die indische Kinderfrau). Der Mörder wird lange Zeit verborgen gehalten, ist dann aber nicht ganz so überraschend.

Da auch hier die Andeutungen rund um die Vergangenheit der Eltern wieder nicht aufgelöst werden, werde ich auch den nächsten Teil der Reihe noch lesen…

So, the love interest wasn't really a rogue, but someone that wanted to solve a mystery. The main character wanted to be a spy, and yet she was quite bad at it. The thing about this story that I liked though, is that it was not as predictable as I had judged it to be. In the end, all I am saying is that the person you thought was the killer wasn't.

Some things that I also liked about the book was how good the characters were. They weren't the normal, and that was something that I really enjoyed.

I also liked the theme of the story, which is that what you think you want will not always be what you want, something that I can relate to.

This is a classic tale of a young Heiress who wants more out of life than marriage, particularly marriage to a peer of the realm. She would rather solve crimes. When servants start to go missing, and a clue leads her to the enigmatic Earl of Mansfield, who has secrets of his own.

Hijinks and Shenanigans ensue.

I like that Olivia Drake builds in mystery and alternates to the same old path for women of the time. There is a certain suspension of disbelief in any historical romance where the heroine is able to carve her own path, knowing what we know about the options for women in that century and timeperiod.

This was the first book of Olivia Drake's I had read, and I vividly remember picking it up from my local library. I was excited to read it (mostly because I thought Thane was a hot name) but I was not disappointed. I must have read it within a day or two, and then I read it again. I have to admit, I did not see the plot twist coming, and because of my days on Wattpad, I'm usually good at predicting endings. This book is worth reading. It has the perfect amount of action, and romance and, steaminess. The female lead is headstrong but in an admirable way. And the male lead is protective in a way that makes your knees weak.

I liked this one a lot. Thane and Lindsey were both very likeable characters. Both the romance and the suspense were enjoyable and believable. I only had a couple of negatives-Thane's family dyanamics really didn't ring true to me and the girls' mother is so distasteful that it takes away from my enjoyment of the book. I have read other books in which the mother is ambition to land a duke that didn't bother me as much as this one.

Absolutely loved it! I had read the first and was dying for the second. Lindsey is so head strong and genes for herself that it is so refreshing to see someone match her. And Thane. Good Gawd. If that man were real. The divorce rate would be higher. His character is so tough but when he is with Lindsey or his ward, he would soften and become a big ole Teddy bear.

When I started reading this book it sounded familiar. The more I read the more I knew how the book would end. This book may of been published recently, but I have read this book in the past. I enjoyed the book, but this publishing is not the first time it has been out. I gave it one star not because it was a bad book but because it has been published before just the names have changed.

Though I like the story line and how it combines romance and mystery, I still don't understand the significance of the elicit and explicit scenes.
I believe the story can go on pretty well without the explicit expressions; it would've been better if those scenes were suggested and left to the reader's imagination!

One of my fellow goodreads friends had this on their list so I picked it up. Never read Drake before, like her. This was witty and fun and the characters were great. I love a women who is a little before her time and a man who admires her for it.

I got to page 167 before I skipped to the end to find out who the murderer was. I just wasn't feeling the magic. It's especially hard to cheer for the hero and heroine to be together when she spends most of the book suspecting him of murder.

All I can say is, WOW! What a fun read. Lindsay was the perfect match to Thane as they worked to bring a serial killer to justice, while trying to fight their attraction to one another. Throw in a bit of spice and wit and it was a page turner for me!
