I agree with Horn Book Guide that Jacques and De Beanstalk “makes for an entertaining read-aloud.” It is a very fun book to listen to and read. The dialect it is written in and the pictures make it a fun book. If you are going to use it for a read aloud, read the beginning glossary and hints on how to read it. It has the same storyline as Jack in the Beanstalk, only it takes place in the bayou.

This one isn't as good as Petite Rouge and The Three Cajun Pigs. Yes, it still has the dialect and good rhythm and rhyme, but it just isn't as funny or interesting. I guess I was expecting Ol' Claude, the alligator, to show up somewhere. It also skips half the story since Jack visits the giant's house 3 times in the original story (and only once in this one).

A Cajun Jack & the Beanstalk. Instead of smelling a boy or man, the giant smells cayenne and knows there's a Cajun around.

And Jacques doesn't steal the hen, he rescues her. The hen becomes MaMA's favorite pet -- spoiled rotten and laying plenty of golden eggs.

Fantastic read-aloud.

I don't think this is as strong as Petite Rouge or Three Little Cajun Pigs, but it's still a fun retelling. I love that Cajuns smell of cayenne to the giant.

This book was rather interesting. The story line is very similar to the original Jack and the Beanstalk tale, but the author did a very good job of putting a Cajun twist on it. It was well done in the manner that the dialect was consistent, however I found myself struggling through it. I've read books where the dialect was consuming, such as Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, but for a picture book it was a little startling. The rhyme was appealing, seeing as it was a children's picture book, but I ...more

DO YOU SPEAK FRENCH? MAIS OUI!

Just don't ask me to read this out loud! Hilarious book and I kept correcting myself with all those "De's" and Dem's". Wonderful illustrations that helped the story along. I liked the French Bayou word choice and rhyme that gave the story a nice rhyme and french quarter flavor. You will have to do your research before you read to students. Words there that I simply did not know. Get your french dictionary together and have a laugh and a giggle. Amusez vous bien
