A must-read for any career-minded individual, whether you looking for a career change or happy where you are. Scumaci's career coaching wisdom is demonstrated through the story of Zoe, who was forced to reinvent herself after she was unexpectedly fired from her job. Scumaci expertly provides both strategy and tactics as she explains the value of self-awareness, as well as the importance of being open to feedback from others. This book offers excellent career development advice, which continues in her three-part appendix where she answers questions, provides insight for "bosses", and provides a book club discussion guide.

Scumaci uses a new way of reaching her readers in this book by following the story of Zoe, a young woman who has just been released from a dead end job. Zoe’s journey from ‘fired employee’ to a successful woman in a business environment is written and followed as an example that we can all follow. From questioning the value that she brought to the company (if any) to learning how to work with a mentor, the growth process that Zoe goes through in the pages of this book is a road map that can take each of us on a similar journey to understanding ourselves and our value.

Between the stories about Zoe and how she’s pulling her life back together, Dondi gives insightful, relevant advice to the reader that can bring this same insight into his or her life. With thought provoking questions and well highlighted points, Scumaci acts as a mentor for the reader. Challenging the reader to find his or her own value at work or in business, Dondi is able to ask the tough questions and, through Zoe’s story, show the reader what to do with these questions.

I would go beyond recommending this book as a good read. I think that anyone who wants to create a better job situation for themselves, help secure their own position at work, or just get more in touch with strengths and weaknesses needs to own this book. Readers will no doubt find themselves scribbling in the margins, highlighting sections and putting Dondi’s relevant advice into play on a daily basis. This book is a necessity and should have a place of honor on book shelves or desks. More than just a self help, Career Moves is a reference book that should always be within reach.

I received this book through a Goodreads giveaway.

First, the pros: the book had a lot of good advice for working women (or men, for that matter). Even if you are happy at your work, it could be a good refresher on the different methods to help yourself, help others, and stay motivated and productive.

Cons: I wasn't the biggest fan of her writing style. Parts were hackneyed, and I had to stop to roll my eyes at several lines (such as "She watched as wisdom took center stage and began to dance"). I also have a lot of trouble taking advice from someone who praises any aspect of Sarah Palin. Sorry, but you can't take one of the most controversial figures in politics right now and just tell readers to not think about her actions in that context. I also did not see the need for the peppering of references to her other book throughout this one. Just include a "Further Reading" section.

Overall, I could see how this book could help some people, the same way any self-help book has that potential. The trouble is, the person first has to want to be helped, and have some clear cut career goals already in mind.

I won this in a goodreads giveaway!

Review: This struck me as different from other job/career books. It goes a little deeper and gives ideas to make your own opportunities and to really dig deeper into yourself to figure out what you want to do.

This book helps answer questions like "What if I discover I'm in the wrong job?" and more.

Really cornball in parts and one section bogged down and seemed to go off the track, but overall useful enough that I highlighted many parts.
