Book 7 in the Nature of Desire series.

Chloe has always been a creature of joy and laughter. Since a brutal attack nearly a year ago, the trauma she experienced has gotten worse. She has started hiding from her life, even putting up walls between herself and those she cares about most. During a panic attack one night, she impulsively calls a number that she’s had for many

After a horrible attack about a year ago, Chloe suffers from panic attacks. Her sanctuary was branded. She's always been a woman full of life, joy and laughter. Her friend Gen said over a year ago:

"If anyone could live on the curve of a rainbow, it would be you."

Sadly that's gone now. During a panic attack one night, she called a number that she'd treasured for many months. It's Brendan's. She met him at Tyler

"There's this theory, that when two people focus on the rhythm of their hearts, it synchronizes them. Brings the beats together."

What happens when a natural submissive falls in love with someone who is not wired for the D/s lifestyle?

Branded Sanctuary is the story of Brendan and Chloe. We know from Ice Queen that Brendan is a natural submissive. It's part of his nature. It is who he is. He accepts it. He embraces the whole D/s lifestyle.

Chloe was a whole different matter

Unfortunately, not even Joey Hill's fantastic writing could save this one for me.

I just didn't feel the bond between Brendan and Chloe. A year goes by between their meeting and where this book picks up. They have had no contact in this time, yet their first conversation was as if they were the best of friends......confidants. Just wasn't believable to me.

Also a lot of the prose felt like it was forcing feelings on me rather than allowing me to feel them. Almost as if

This was too schmaltzy for me. I think the fact that this was centered around Tyler & Margueriete's immediate little world didn't do it any favors in my book either. Not really a fan of those two together or their books due to the immense Gary-Stu way Tyler was written & Margueriete's Yoda like Dom wisdom yet crazy emotional angst.

Brendan is just a version of Tyler in submissive form. He says & does the perfect things almost 100% of the time, like a knight in shining armor. Every

First I just wanted to share how I ended up reading this book. I happened to be browsing reviews on Goodreads trying to pick out what to read next when I read a review that said something to the effect of, "This book isn't like a Joey Hill book so if that's what you were hoping for you should probably just read Joey HIll." I took the reviewer's suggestion and browsed on over to Ms. Hill's books. As soon as I saw the titile of this book I knew it was Brendan's book and that it was exactly the ...more

3.5+ stars

This was one of the toughest books in this series for me... and in many ways, it falls outside the series in terms of its resolution. The tough part was watching Chloe try to deal with the fall-out of being attacked and violently beaten by Marguerite's father, when he was trying to lure Marguerite to him. Marguerite's father went to the tea shop looking for M, but instead he found Chloe and Natalie, a 9 yr old girl and favorite. M's father tried to abduct Natalie, but he had to go

(October) 2.5* You know, I really wanted to love this book – I’m a huge Joey W. Hill fan. Mirror of My Soul is one of my favorite books, a gorgeous 5* read. Natural Law and Rough Canvas are awesome. JH’s Knights of the Board Room have mostly been fab. But this one…not so much. I found myself so bored while reading it (short book but took me 3 days to finish it – when I put it down I was not inspired to pick it up again) – there was so much psycho-babble that half the time I had no idea what they ...more
Cheap and Lazy
Hot, but not the hottest, very romantic. Although this wasn't my favorite in the Nature of Desire series (so far, my fav's would be: Natural Law, Mirror of My Soul/Ice Queen, and Rough Canvas), the depth and scope of the writing is leaps and bounds over so much of the erotic romance out there. I'd give it four stars for a Joey W. Hill, but it's a 5+ anywhere else. If you're interested in the psychological aspects of BDSM, if you like many-layered characters and lots of romance with a depth that ...more

As the seventh and last book in the Nature of Desire series, this is a more psychological than physical portrayal of BDSM, and no one tackles the emotion behind it better than Joey Hill. The story does a brilliant job at expressing the multiple facets and complexity of the lifestyle, as misunderstood as it is. Ms. Hill says it best in this book: A million people mean a million different religions. The H/h romance is sweeter than her usual style, and I especially enjoyed the connection to the ...more

This book is ridiculous. All transcendental woo-woo hooey. The descriptions are over-elaborate. There's insta-love, my least favorite trope. And how about the first time they have sex, there's no discussion about safe sex, she just tells him she doesn't want him to use a condom. How f%#king stupid are you, anyway?!

Joey Hill is one of my favorite writers of erotica and erotic romance, and this book had some amazingly hot scenes. I will read and re-read the slave auction, in particular. Too bad the whole thing wasn't like that.

It was well-written and well-characterized, but ultimately not quite what I wanted. Hill is fantastic at kinky sex and the psychology of BDSM. This book started out seeming as if it would be about innocent Chloe discovering her dominant (or possibly submissive) tendencies. But it

Weak and angsty heroine

Love this series but Chloe was too much of a drama queen and caught up to deeply in two MINOR attacks from her past. Compared to Marguerite she's a major wuss. Loved Brendon in the other books but would have liked to see his point of view rather than all Chloe's crazy messed up thinking that was tiresome. Lovemaking and BDSM was weak didn't experience much connection with Chloe at all. Could have explored Brendon's pain from his past more deeply instead of relying on

Brendan and Chloe's story. I really enjoyed the intuitive insight the characters had regarding relationships. Although there was a lot of sexual scenes in this story, I thought this book was a lot more tame than previous NOD stories.

I'm torn on this one. I really love Brendan but I've been partial to him since Ice Queen. I can't say enough good things about Brendan-his heart, his protectiveness, his need to serve & please all of it is so lovable & sexy. Pretty much every word that comes out of his mouth is panty melting. The auction scene is probably one of the most romantic scenes I've ever read by Ms. Hill. I even like Chloe although I felt like her response to the incident with Marguerite's father was ...more

OK, three stars because the hero, Brendan, is an absolute hunkasaurus of the first order. Gorgeous, sensitive, sub-like, sweet, smart, and horny as hell...yup he's got it all.

Now, why not 4 stars? OK, the heroine, Chloe just annoyed the crap outta me. I kept thinking it was because I did not read the previous 2 books in this series, which feature 2 peripheral characters in this book, married couple Marguerite and Tyler. You see, they run an exclusive BDSM club, and Marguerite was the

This series continues to break my heart and show the beauty of true love. Joey's haiku is beautiful:
He enclosed her sole
A substitute for her soul
Since her soul fears him
The fierceness that these characters' love ... Marguerite and Tyler take such good care of Chloe, Gen and Brendan. Goddess, I am in absolute love with Tyler ;-)
Chloe's journey to find her joie de vivre after an attack brought her nightmares back from a previous attack, which then brings her into the arms of Brendan. As she walks

I have to be honest and share with you that I'm enamored with the writing style of Joey Hill. It was this series that first hooked me into exploring the world of romantic erotica. I have enjoyed every book in the series and would encourage you to read them, or at least Ice Queen to get a feel for Brandan's story.
What I love about this story, and indeed all of Ms Hill's stories, is the portrayal of her characters, in the fact she writes and avoids cliches with great sensitivity and compassion.

There was a sad and unhappy tone throughout without anything to lift the story especially since I didn't buy the insta romance. Claire was infantilized too much by the secondary characters. Brendan's angst about asking for what he wanted seemed forced considering how hard he worked to make the relationship happen. No confidence this relationship will last. Disappointed.

Joey is the master of expression. This story is the perfect expression of the stages one goes through when their life has been destroyed and what the journey back to wholeness may feel like. Although the storyline may be unconventional the emotions are powerful and authentic.

Ms Hill paces the story slowly giving lots of detail that conveys the carefully controlled emotions that want to be revealed. Chloe and Brendan are sparking the sexual and emotional tension which lead up to one hell of a hot

oh!! this one has to be my favourite, after Natural Law, the only other one i gave 5 full stars to!

we met Chloe in books 3 and 4, M and Tyler's stories, she works in M's tea shoppe. after a brutal attack in said shoppe, Chloe is left with the feeling she is getting worse. her nightmares are more frequent, and more vivid. she calls a number she got, at M and Tyler's wedding, from Brendan, late one night after a panic attack that knocked her off her feet. Brendan is a sub we met before, he is the

Branded Sanctuary is the story of Chloe and Brendan, in which Chloe has difficulty resolving the brutal attack she suffered at the hands of Marguerite's father, and after evil enters her life she cannot reconcile or continue to believe in her natural nature of being joyful and full of life. Brendan and Chloe met at Tyler and M's wedding, and there was an instant connection, but Brendan is a natural submissive, a very potent and important part of his life. Chloe is just becoming aware of the D/s ...more

It's an average fare compared to the others before this because the storyline and the level of suspense pales in comparison once you have read Mirror of My Soul and Rough canvas. Nonetheless, the story itself is sweet.

I find the main character Chloe a bit annoying. I just can't sympathize with her. She's comes across as a bit of a neurotic paranoid woman. Very confused and childish at the same time. It's like she's neither here nor there.

Brendan, however, is wonderful. But the hero does come

I am simply amazed by this story, of course I am usually amazed by anything that Ms. Hill writes. I think she is one of the best authors writing today. I was so happy to see Chloe finally find the way to peace that she had looking for. It was wonderful to read the journey that took her from frighten angry woman to loving confident lover. Brendan was also a surprise. Although I had met him in earlier books his personality was muted by Marguerite and the demands that she had of him. Brendan is an ...more
If you could give 1/2 stars this would be a 3.5 for me. I really wanted to like this book, but after reading Ice Queen, Mirror of my Soul, and Rough Canvas which were to me mind-blowingly good, this was just meh for me.

There were a couple things that bothered me - Ok Chloe went through some scary stuff but I'm not sure it warranted the type of spiral into total darkness she was in. It's not a fair comparison - but - compared to Marguerite's reason's for her darkness, Chloe's sudden turn from

I love all of Joey W. Hill's books and this one is no exception. The depth and emotion contained within the pages of her books never ceases to amaze me. This book is the 7th in the Nature of Desire series, book 8 Divine Solace will be available March 21st 2014 and I can't wait.

Brendan and Chloe are on a roller coaster ride and not in a good way. The emotional turmoil in this book had me crying and cheering with the characters. I loved all of the characters involved in this story and am always
Chloe survived a mad man's attack and has trouble feeling safe. She calls Brandon, late one night, after a terrible nightmare and they end up having phone sex. Both characters are wounded and vulnerable, and see in each other safety. However, Brandon is a sexual submissive and Chloe is no Dominatrix. Chloe doubts if she can give Brandodn what he needs to be satisfied and happy. The sex is steamy and the attaction between the leads is believable. I liked their banter, it felt natural.
