The best guide to the birds of Peru―now in a revised paperback edition
Birds of Peru is the most complete and authoritative field guide to this diverse, neotropical landscape. It features every one of Peru's 1,817 bird species and shows the distinct plumages of each in 307 superb, high-quality color plates. Concise descriptions and color distribution maps are located opposite the plates, making this book much easier to use in the field than standard neotropical field guides. This fully revised paperback edition includes twenty-five additional species.
Used on two trips this year to Peru (central valley and South East - Sacred Valley/Manu road/Los Amigos) and earlier on a trip to the north (Abra Patricia/Plataforma). Best field guide for Peru in my opinion. Yes, there will be splits that are not in there yet and the maps are a bit small. But maybe combined with Merlin I would still recommend it.
Though I like the relatively compact size and page layout of this guide, especially the thumbnail maps next to the text on each plate spread, the inconsistent quality of the illustrations made it less than a joy to use.
Used in Peruvian Amazon to identify more birds than I thought I could see in one place! Excellent, Excellent, Excellent. Don't go birding in Peru without it! Quite large and heavy but worth the space in the backpack. Range maps are included in this edition, which is quite helpful!
It's the only book that was used as a field guide by field staff and local guides at MLC, Manu Reserve, Peru so there is no greater endorsement than that!
Superb in every way. A detailed guide to the bird species found across the country. This was useful on my recent expedition to Peru for quick and easy bird identification. Highly recommend.
