For too long religion has enjoyed the benefit of the doubt, taking all the benefit and allowing none of the doubt. With the rise of Islam and political correctness, the threat it now poses to our basic freedoms is beyond a joke. Award-winning comedian Pat Condell gets serious and gives religion the kicking it deserves in his popular and controversial video monologues, sixty of which are collected here for the first time, including Welcome to Saudi Britain, Free Speech Is Sacred and Wake Up, America.
Articulate, often hilarious and always fearless. One of the great advocates for/living examples of *true* freedom of speech - Pat's youtube monologues should be the stuff of legend one day.
If you're highly religious and easily offended, this book is definitely for you :3
This book is definitely NOT politically correct and if you hold religious beliefs or are sensitive toward criticism of religion then this is not the book for you. You will be offended. This book is a compilation of transcripts of Pat Condell's YouTube videos so if you are a fan of those and want a written copy to read at your convenience then this book it for you. Pat Condell is very critical of religion (all religion) and expresses his criticism in no uncertain terms. There is no sugar-coating or mincing of words here! I personally love Pat Condell's videos as his views are more or less parallel to my own so I was very happy to get my hands on this book. I find this book incredibly refreshing because it deals with subject matter that most of us are afraid to touch on. In this over-sensitive, over-politically-correct world, Pat Condell is a legend as he has the guts to say what many think but would never dare utter. Highly recommended.
First and foremost, if you are very sensitive about your beliefs (namely Christians and Muslims) then I would NOT recommend this book. This book is very critical when it concerns religion and it spends much time criticizing aspects of religion and anything that is a result of religion. That isn't to say this isn't a fantastic read though, because if you are religious, but are not easily offended then I'm sure you would actually enjoy this. If you can get past all the very offensive material, this book contains some great points. If you are NOT religious in any way, then I guarantee you will love this book.
This is book is not written in the way a book is normally written. All the lines were originally written and scripted in the form of podcasts for his website and his youtube channel. It also doesn't really follow a conventional pattern of a regular book. Each chapter just relates to a certain idea or point that Condell has decided to elaborate on or if there has been a "recent" pertaining in any way to religion he will analyze that event.
("Recent" is in quotations because each chapter/point was made at different times over the course of a few years. As was stated earlier, the book was originally just podcasts and each podcast was made at different times, so they were relevant and recent at the time of release.)
Honestly, I loved this book because I have never been a fan of religion (I still respect others' beliefs so don't worry) and everything Condell says makes perfect sense to me and can be funny as well at times. Almost everything he says is said in a very articulate manner and even his criticisms are articulate and aren't often just flat, direct insults to others.
Again, if you are easily offended then it would probably be in your best interest to avoid this one, but for the rest of you, this is a fantastic read.
This review was made from the viewpoint of an Atheist.
I bonded with this free and fearless thinker immediately!! If only humanity had 10 or 20 million people like this, life would be so much more harmonious!! Every thing this fellow has to say is worth listening to.
