Wow. This book was really lame. The only thing cool about it was that it was a flap book. I'm not a kid reviewer, but it could've been better.
I mean, the last page didn't even seem like it should be the last page, and previous readers (it was a library copy) had almost teared off the back cover thinking there was more!! LOL
Caillou visits his grandmother one day and she is birdwatching. He takes a huge interest in the birds and how some will get close with food. His grandmother throws food adn they flock. She tells her knowledge of differnt birds and points out thier charateristics. Caillou likes the birds and got a birdfeeder for his own house so he can watch them all the time.
Caillou Goes Birdwatching was insipid, even by Caillou standards. I read it to my son three or four times, but can barely recall anything that happened. He sees some birds with his grandma, and she gets him a bird feeder, that's about it. I didn't understand other parents' hate for Caillou until I started reading these books to my child.
Okay, so Caillou is a member of our family. My children adore this little guy. Thank God for Sprout on Demand because Caillou is on our TV almost 24/7. He is the back-drop to our lives and as far as children's television goes, I love the little guy. The shows present wholesome stories without managing to be too trite. The characters manage to be interesting without trying too hard. My children have learned so much and Caillou has helped us teach the children quite a bit. When things happen, we often reference Caillou.
SO, when I finally found a great box set of Caillou books I was THRILLED. My kids obsessed with books and this was going to combine their love of literature with their favorite character. I was disappointed. While the stories are so similar to the episodes, they all seem chopped off. They end so abruptly and seem to be missing so much detail. The pictures are great and we still enjoy them, but they fall a little short of the show.
I still adore Caillou and as far as kiddie characters go, he rocks. I'm just a little disappointed in the books.
