One of the two major books about oil pastel, the other being Oil Pastel: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artist. Both are filled with good information on the history of the medium, materials used for painting, and a variety of techniques. This book has several demonstrations using the author's work as examples. I found lots of inspiration here.

Worth buying if you are interested in oil pastels, but would not be my first choice as far as an oil pastel book (see my other art book reviews). Teaches mainly one artist's very particular technique, which did not really appeal to me. And even though there was a kind of step by step instruction for his technique, I still felt like there were gaps which made it challenging for someone new to the medium to follow.

This is a wonderful book which needs to be made available again. I ordered a copy of this for the local library because it is the best of its kind on the subject and young people were getting into oil pastels in a huge way. I used funds from the art association. In less than six months, an ignorant "liberrian" pulled and tossed it. Why? Because of the publication date.
