Manfred Kyber, born in Riga (then under Russian rule), grew up on his father's estate. He studied philosophy in Leipzig and later moved to Berlin, where he lived for ten years and published his first works. He lived in Löwenstein, Württemberg (southern Germany) since 1923. In addition to poems, a novel, plays, theater criticism and an introduction to occultism, he primarily wrote fairy tales and animal stories – partially humorous, partially serious – which, reminiscent of La Fontaine, humanize animals to a certain degree to convey their feelings and elaborate on philosophical questions. He became famous for his stories Unter Tieren (Among Animals). He was a pacifist and advocate of animals' rights. He died on March 10, 1933 in Löwenstein.
I was reading these tales as part of a translation assignment. In order to translate them well, I had to do some background research on Manfred Kyber, and learned quite a lot about anthroposophy. Not to go into details, it is a philosophy of searching deeper sense and meaning in the most mundane things and phenomena around us. In accordance to the philosophy he was devoted to, Kyber wrote tales about tools and animals (he was also a fierce fighter for animal rights). All tales have a moral, the two that I was analyzing are about finding a new, more positive vocation in your life, and the bitter outcome of letting wrong ideas have influence on our state of mind. Cute and interesting, if you bother to scratch a bit beyond the surface.
