One Sentence Review: Early chapter book fare sometimes deals with superheroes, but this fills the too-little-filled sheep superhero genre (and high time too, I say).

Who can resist the trope of 'ordinary kid becomes a superhero' especially when the ordinary kid stays, well, ordinary? And who could ever resist Marvelous Maud, the smartaleck talking sheep sidekick? Maybe they've been picked due to a directive from National that the local superheroes organization must recruit, and maybe they don't have any superpowers (except Maud talking), but they prove they can make a difference in their community anyway. An aging group of local superheroes is in need of new blood, so they recruit at the local elementary school. The very un-super Ernie is the only one who shows up, so he is given a sidekick (the unlikely sheep Maud) and becomes part of the team. Funny and light as air, this series (brought over the pond by Eerdmans Books) will garner its share of fans.

Perfect for the 5-10 crowd Extraordinary Ernie and Marvelous Maud will appeal to kids who love superheroes or graphic novels. I imagine this is the kind of book touted for reluctant readers. My kids are 9, 8, and 7 and all three are enjoying this series at his/her own pace. It's a simple (yet fantastical) story with just enough silly humor and lots of heart.

Ernie and Maud make a great pair! Together they find that their superhero talents were in them all along, even before they had their superhero costumes - a flowing cape and fluorescent green pants.

I love the humorous tone and the endearing characters! This is a really fun book.
