I never thought of consumerist capitalism as the social means to generating identity before reading this book. The argument is convincing until chapter 4 where it resurrects Freud. At which point I put myself into speed read mode, and got on to chapter 5 where the book ends.
The book ends with a quick introspection into the environmental costs of consumerism, and whether there is a way to move beyond consumerism. Hmmmmm, not likely soon.
